From the time of their spectacular arrival 17 years ago, Pearl Jam has continually earned and maintained the respect of one of popular music's most devoted followings. This seven-disc boxed set contains three very special shows captured in the band's backyard at The Gorge, the beautiful outdoor venue on the Columbia River in central Washington. These three gigs were milestone dates on Pearl Jam's 2005-2006 World Tour.

After the band's emergence in 1991, Pearl Jam maintained a remarkable winning streak as forerunners of the new classic rock, releasing a string of gutsy, top-shelf grunge-inflected studio albums. But Pearl Jam earned their real stripes as a road band, building a devoted audience by touring incessantly and documenting those show with a torrent of recordings.
LIVE AT THE GORGE 05/06, released in 2007, is a mammoth seven-disc set that captures the band's crackling live energy. Representing two years of in-concert material, LIVE AT THE GORGE reveals Peal Jam as dazzling, road-tested rockers capable of putting on shows that make their studio efforts pale in comparison. The generous set draws from the band's catalogue, and features classic Pearl Jam originals ("Alive," "Even Flow") and amped-up covers (Neil Young's "Rockin' In the Free World," the Who's "Baba O'Reily," and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing.")

The choice, ripe ingredients for great-grandma Pearl's famous Jam are gently selected just after ripening and then stored in a cool dark cellar so they have plenty of space and time to blend together and...oh excuse us, Eddie, Jeff, Mike and Stone are the members of Pearl Jam with the amazing Matt Cameron helping out on drums.

I bought this through the Pearl Jam fan club mainly for the box art and the poscards they gave with the pre-order, and not as much for the music, simply because I already own a few dozen other Pearl Jam concert albums... I was mistaken... this is an unbelievable set. The 2005 show has them playing at the gorge a night before Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and Eddie repeatedly leads the crowd in singing out to Tom at his hotel nearby. His goal was to get Tom to come join them for the party. There are familiar songs done in new ways, sometimes with new vocals as in the anti-war version of Yellow Ledbetter. This set reminded me once again what an amazing live band Pearl Jam is. If you are a fan of the band, you owe it to yourself to pick this up... Maybe from their website :)
