On ORU, celebrated flautist Stroutsos isolates and radically slows down the traditional melodies and hymns of the Santeria service and voices them with soulful Native American and Chinese flutes and whistles. He adds acoustic bass for bottom, and intoxicating Latin percussion--less frenzied than traditional Yoruban drumming, but plenty stirring. To preserve some of the Cuban style he invites guest vocalists Eliane Hernandez and Lazaro Galarraga to slow-chant on a few tracks. Particularly moving is "Ochu," a paean to the god of oceans and rivers, rendered in a dramatic droning style. | | Those who think the bamboo flute can only express serenity are in for an awakening; Stroutsos teases a variety of moods from his instrument--praiseful, sly, urgent--emulating the forces of nature in all their beauty and rage. As with all the best examples of ethnic fusion, Stroutsos's imaginative interpretations of these sacred songs may expose a whole new audience to the power of this music. |
