For a young and commercially successful artist, Norah Jones has admirably avoided playing it too safe. After scoring an unlikely sales sensation and multiple Grammy award winner with 2002's torchy Come Away With Me, Jones shifted gears slightly to accent that album's country and folk elements on the 1970s-styled follow-up, Feels Like Home. Following that, Jones deliberately played with expectations, first becoming a low-key sideman in a quirky alt-country band called the Little Willies, then playing the lead role in a new movie by Hong Kong arthouse director Wong Kar-Wai.

Jones's third album, Not Too Late, is perhaps not as extreme as any of those other moves away from her initial comfort zone, but it's a departure nonetheless. Recorded by Jones and longtime collaborator Lee Alexander in their home studio and featuring only self-penned material, Not Too Late is far less polished than Jones's previous records, with many songs featuring little more than the singer's familiar croon, a Floyd Cramer-influenced piano, and Alexander's subtle bass. Not quite jazz, country, or pop, Not Too Late fuses all of Jones's influences into an immediately identifiable whole. It's easily her most mature and personal album to date.

Deluxe DVD content includes:
1. "Thinking About You" (Music Video)
2. "Until The End" (Music Video)
3. "Sinkin' Soon" (Music Video)
4. Interview with Norah
5. "Thinking About You" (behind the scenes at the video shoot)
6. "Sinkin' Soon" (behind the scenes at the video shoot)
7. Two live bonus tracks from Rehearsals.com filmed in Burbank, CA, in November 2006.

"Jones has reclaimed her music on her own terms, establishing a new level of artistry with a fascinating line in subversion of the politest kind."  Mojo
"Something altogether fresh....Just like that, Jones transforms herself into the gentlest of cutting-edge artists."  Uncut

Norah Jones - Not Too Late - CD

It takes a particular mood to fully delve into the sultry, smooth rhythms and vocals of a Norah Jones record. We're usually used to something more fast-paced, booming and contemporary, so it might take some adjusting to sit still and mellow the senses. But once the necessary mood is reached, without any assistance from Xanax, the soothing sensation of her music is extraordinary. ...read the full review

Not Too Late opens with the somber Wish I Could, which leads off with just a guitar followed by Norahs sublime vocals. This one is heavy for an opener, with lyrics about the unfairness of love in war. What kicks are lines like I dont tell her that I once loved you too and We met in a place I used to go/ Now I only walk by slow/ Cant bear to go in without you, you know/ Wish I could. Words that hit hard, as do the rest of the lyrics on this CD written by Norah or the team of Jones/Alexander. ...read the full review

Down Beat (p.58)

No Depression (p.108)
- "NOT TOO LATE operates from an intimate stance.....Acoustic textures and bone-dry vocals draw the focus to the tune..."

(p.104)
- 4 stars out of 5 -- "Jones has reclaimed her music on her own terms, establishing a new level of artistry with a fascinating line in subversion of the politest kind."

Rolling Stone 6 of 10
In general, the organs and cellos and even horns Jones enlists blend into what must now be deemed an all-too-soothing formula. The fans who adore her take this formula as proof of her kindness, and they're probably right. - Robert Christgau

L.A. Times 7 of 10
On the country side project the Little Willies and in a guest vocal with the experimental rock-hip-hop band Peeping Tom, she loosened up and showed a lively, rowdy side. A bit of that spirit finds its way onto her third album, which comes out Tuesday. In "Sinkin' Soon," a Weill-style cabaret number, and the theatrical "My Dear Country," she's an entirely different singer, with an edgy tone and an animated personality. "Little Room" is less adventurous, but she does give it a bit of bawdiness. But whenever she finds herself somewhere like that, she quickly repairs to her sanctuary of austere alt-country and simmering light soul. - Richard Cromelin

Bio
When young singer/pianist Norah Jones arrived in New York City from Texas, few expected that within a couple of years she'd be a chart-topping, MTV-friendly, press-besieged sensation. Yet she charmed listeners by the truckload with her 2002 Blue Note release Come Away With Me, with ethereal, wispy vocals, melodic, dewy piano work, and the songwriting acumen of such NYC cult heroes as Jesse Harris.
