Nokia E71 Smart Phone Review
techradar.com Reviews
Published on: 7/30/2008 2:00 PM
Touching is very much in vogue these days, but if you plan to do a lot of typing, whether it be texts, notes or even novels, there's still no real substitute for the tactile response of a full, hard-key QWERTY keyboard. And it's the keyboard that dominates the Nokia E71. Smaller than its predecessor, the E61, Nokia has still managed the trick of making it perfectly easy to use, with nicely curved rubberised buttons and bright backlighting which, thanks to a clever light sensor, only kicks in when you need it....read the full review

5 of 5 Very solid device Monday, March 02, 2009
A Customer from Chicago, IL
I have had the E71 now for about 2 weeks and it has been amazing so far. At first I was a little disappointed with the size of the QWERTY however, I'm completely used to it now and I can type virtually mistake-free. The phone performs almost all its tasks extremely quickly, I did get one or two stalls/resets from heavy usage however, but this is understandable, when you are demanding so much from such a compact device. I bought a silicone case for it and it looks great, I do like to use it outside of the case occasionally to remind myself of its sleek, sexy design. Since this phone has been around for a decent amount of time now, the support / forums online are very helpful and there is plenty of software to download to increase functionality. I can only imagine how awesome this device would be if I had an unlimited data plan (I currently am on a campus and use WiFi most of the time, and it performs great).

5 of 5 Simply Amazing!!! Sunday, February 08, 2009
Nestor from San Francisco, Ca
First off, let's not go comparing this device to an iPhone! They are both no where near each other so let's set that straight. The phone itself is amazing. It's construction and feel right off the bat tells you this phone is made with quality! Worth every penny. Runs on 3G where available, is super crystal clear when talking on it, email support is perfect. It has a small screen when you (if you still are comparing it to the iPhone) but that doesn't matter. I have an iPhone, a Nokia E71 & a LG Voyager. Love them all in they're own special way! To sum it all up, this phone quite possibly kills the blackberry. My problem with the blackberry was it's sidekick's dirty track ball.

5 of 5 Beautiful, robust device Wednesday, February 04, 2009
Bradspace from Ellicott City, MD
There is no nicer looking phone on the market. Period. It is fast and out of the box, easy to use. I ran into problems with this device based on the applications. I am a HEAVY mobile email user for my job, and Mail for Exchange is severely lacking for a heavy user. I tried several of the aftermarket apps and did not like any of them. If you don't need heavy Exchange email use, you can't go wrong with this beauty!

4 of 5 Great Phone Saturday, January 03, 2009
Muruga from Woodbridge, NJ
It's an excellent phone and meets most of my expectations. Few observations though: 1. Ear phone - absolute waste. I have to hold it with both hands. Anyways, I ordered a new set of in-ear phones. But, would have been happier if I got one that is useful. 2. I take long calls on my cell phone. It doesn't really last 4 days. But, certainly it is better than many other in the market. 3. Key board is cramped. But, you can't expect to have a QWERTY board in a thin/sleek model like this.

Bob from NY
This phone is great it does everything I need it to do and more. Traded up from an e51 and love it even more. I wish the price was a little lower but still worth the money. I have big hands and can still use the keyboard with out much issue.

5 of 5 Solid phone Tuesday, December 30, 2008
Craig from Raleigh, NC
This is probably the best phone Nokia makes presently (and that is available in the US). The S60 OS is very fast. The keyboard click feels very good and is easy to use for a small keyboard. Everyone I've let try it likes the keyboard. It is very solidly built and all metal, very sturdy. Slips in a pocket easily. Calls are clear and sound good. The browser works great, and the wifi & 3G connectivity is great. Speed tests on my AT&T 3G network connection ran over 1 MB. It doesn't rival the iPhone for number of apps available, but if you need a great PHONE that has good internet access and can run a lot of standard productivity apps, this does the trick. There are quite a few S60 apps out there, I've loaded quite a few in the few weeks I've had the phone. And the form factor is outstanding, already received comments on how good looking it is.

5 of 5 Awesome! Sunday, December 28, 2008
Mayuresh from Chicago
Just matches my style. I need Email and web on the go and I have it both. I need to read attachments in office suite and pdf and I get it both. I need the device to look cool and be sturdy I get it both. I got what I was looking for and most importantly it is all what has been advertised by Nokia ... it is the way you work.

5 of 5 Fantastic Saturday, December 27, 2008
Al from Salt Lake City
Nokia is the best phone maker in the world, period. The small keypad getting some use to it but after that is just fabulous. The battery...YES THE Battery life is out of this world. With WiFi on all day long and text messages, phone calls...it is 4 day without a problem. Yes this is not a mistake 4 days before re-charge. Why anyone would buy anything else???

5 of 5 E71 - Unlished Capabilities ! Monday, November 17, 2008
Tiberie from Skopje,Macedonia
I wanted this phone so much & now I got it! :) I've been using it about 2 weeks and I must say that is the best smartphone I've had and out there. It's capabilities are amazing at least! I had E61i and the only reason I replaced it because of the slow responsive interface! Now with the E71 I have true performance, beautiful design and even couple of extra features in my pocket:P App. that stand out + features:WiFi,GPS,built in radio,Nokia Search,Mobbler,Mobiola WebCam,Nokia browser,Nokia Video Centre,Locr,Multiscaner,WeFi,OctroTalk(video stream and videotalk in near future...),Panoman,CorePlayer,FSCaller,Fring,Gmaps,WorldMate. This can do it ALL! One thing that I find it difficult was when trying to take the MicroSD card out of the phone...One have to push real deep and with my finger I can't reach the needed depth, so I use my keys instead. The voice is SOOO CLEAR&LOUD! I adore that! The pouch and the lanyard are great accessories! Battery lasts me 3 days now with intense usage, though a "achieved" 2 days with all day probing and tasting the phone :P But that's normal for tech guy like me:) I expect 4 days with no hassle once I get to now every little thing about this beautiful and very stylish phone. Oh yeah, the camera takes great photos on day light and night time with enough light. When a take shoots in darker rooms, there is annoying purple color all over the picture which I hope will be resolved with new firmware update. That's all I've wanted to share with all of you which have Nokia E71 or intend to buy one or more :) p.s. I have the E71-2 version which is for NAM. So I can't use the 3G in Europe i.e. Macedonia. But I am okey with this, because I have EDGE and WiFi all over when I will be in need.

5 of 5 Solid Smart Phone Monday, October 27, 2008
A Customer from Houston, Texas
I recently bought my e71, and it is everything that I have expected from this smart phone. It looks great (even better than the pics): I promise. This is my second experience with a Nokia cell, and the operating system is still great. I did a lot of research before buying this phone, and I do not regret this purchase at all. It earns compliments and it works the way I expect it to. This is the smart phone of the year.

5 of 5 Awesome! Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Don Keys from Chicago, IL
Amazing piece of technology. I have never seen so many positive reviews for a phone. Even after reading all those, this phone will pleasantly surprise you. To begin with, amazing build quality. You should take a real close look at this phone to appreciate the top notch material and craftsmanship. Battery life is just unbelievable. With moderate to heavy use, this will last for 2-3 days. I tried draining the battery completely, but lost patience. So after 3 weeks of ownership, I still don't know how low battery warning sounds like!. Super responsive menu and OS with real multitasking. OS is not idiot proof, but I mastered it in 2-3 days with little help from manuals/online forums. But I discover new things every day. Did I say no crashes or reboots? It is loaded with features, works well with WiFi, GPS is fast, lots of Symbian 3rd party apps, excellent call quality. A real swiss knife in cellphones. Only drawbacks in my opinion are: 1.It attracts finger prints because of all steel construction. 2.Email solutions are not enterprise grade, but more than enough for regular customers. 3. Camera is plain vanilla, if that is important. Not that important to me.

4 of 5 Works well Sunday, August 31, 2008
Happy and pleased from Chicago, IL
This is my first experience with a PDA phone and all I can is that Nokia has done a great job. Like others have written, Google Maps works well and the aGPS seems to be better at locking in location wise than the iPhone (no surprise given the issues around 3G chipset). Overall, it is a good value for money - the big pluses are the qwerty keyboard's tactile feedback, good battery life and the breadth of S60 related software.

5 of 5 Everything you want in a phone Monday, August 25, 2008
A Customer from Atlanta, GA
I purchased this phone about two weeks ago and so far it has exceeded all my expectations. Some great features are: - All connectivity options 3G, 3.5G, Edge, Wi-fi, Bluetooth - Video conferencing capability - E-mail sync with exchange plus easily add your pop accounts - Fast response time - An accurate GPS receiver - Compact design - FM radio that downloads the station frequency based on your location - And best of all great battery life (Goes at least 2-3 days without charge with bluetooth on & 3 e-mail accounts updated every 5 mins. If I have to write something negative, the menu options could be more intuitive. I had to search menu options few minutes before I could locate the alarm. You will love this phone.

5 of 5 Great Phone! Monday, August 25, 2008
dptcreations from MA
Nokia makes a great device, the way this phone feels in your hands is so solid and thin it makes the iphone look old and clunky. its very easy to use and is very feature rich for an unlocked phone at this price. the operating system is very fast. the camera for a 3.2mp unit could be better but it's good for general use. and the keyboard looks small but even fat fingers can hit the keys correctly. sound quality is great with or with out speaker phone on. this phone has a future so it will be a great investment. I think you will like this phone alot if you get one, so just buy it....

5 of 5 Eat this, iPhone! Sunday, August 24, 2008
Will from Oregon
I go through a lot of phones. Mainly because I can't seem to find the perfect one. I always find something I really dislike about a phone or something is missing. With the first gen iPhone, there was a LOT missing for me. I didn't have that phone for very long. I really thought I had it figured out when I bought the N95-3. That was a really neat device. You could do pretty much anything on it (including edit videos and splice in sound, etc.). But after a while, I just couldn't handle not having a keypad (I message a lot). That being said, I have to say that this phone is the closest I've ever had to perfect. The GPS locks on super quick (compared to my N95) and it has a keypad, bluetooth, wifi, 3.5g. I don't need to tell you the specs, you can see them for yourself. What makes this phone great is that it works. Symbian is a great, stable operating system. Even if you do have to reboot, it's lightning fast. You can install tons of free applications, send MMS messages (take that, iPhone!), tether it to various devices. You can get into the file system and modify content. You can do all of this without having to modify the operating system or "jailbreak" it. I really wanted to like the iPhone, but it was too restricted. I like to be able to mess around with my phone. I'm an I.T. guy. It's in my nature. Design: This phone is beautiful. It reminds me a little of the first gen iPhone. It has a lot of metal in it and it's very heavy for as slim as it is, probably due to the huge 1500 maH battery. Battery life is phenomenal on this phone. I have people in my office who complain about their iPhone 3G batteries all the time. This phone will last you 2-3 days with heavy use easily. If you're looking at this phone it's because you want something...more. You don't want an iPod that acts as a phone, or you don't like touch screen phones. You want something that works well in a business environment and you like a qwerty keyboard. If that's the case, you should buy this phone. The honest-to-god only complaint I could possibly have is the camera. It's not great. Most Nokia cameras are overkill, if anything (like the 5 mp Carl Zeiss on the N95), but this one has issues. Most of the issues with this camera are in dark environments. It seems to be the optics, so a firmware update won't fix that. That being said, it isn't horrible and it records video, which the iPhone still doesn't do. It zooms, which the iPhone still doesn't do (sad, really), and you can do a lot with the pictures/videos after you take them. Anyway, that's my rant. I wish I could give a more detailed, comprehensive review, but I don't have time and there are plenty on the web. Check them out. I read them all before I made my purchase and pretty much all of them were dead-on.

4 of 5 Complex powerful phone Saturday, August 23, 2008
Tom from Blue Hill, ME
I moved from a Palm Treo 650 to the Nokia E71 to lose weight and thickness. It wasn't especially easy. Clearly needed to automate the process to move 1300 contacts and years of calendar history. Succeeded with the contacts but gave up on calendar history. I miss the touchscreen and the keys are small, but love the trade off for lost weight and bulk. Excellent phone but small keys make controlling it somewhat difficult. Maybe I need to let my fingernails grow!

5 of 5 Best smartphone on the market today!! Saturday, August 23, 2008
Willy the Wireless Whiner from Home of the Cowboys!!
Just purchased two E71's. Have been using the E61i for over a year...used the E61 and E62 before that. It took several product revelations for Nokia to hit this one out of the park, but I guess better late than never! I will give Nokia a little slack, Cingular is the culprit for the E62 being such a dog. After Cingular/ATT made Nokia pull back some of the specs, Nokia suffered in the US in the smartphone market, unless you purchased overseas. If Nokia ever decides to market to the US, they will at least have the #2 wireless brand in the States. Until then, we are all being held back by our wonderful carriers that don't have a clue as to what customer service is all about. The E71 fits in every way a mobile user would want it. This kind of reminds me of the days when we used to buy computers and they would throw everything under the sun on the box, and we would only use maybe 20-30% of the software. The E71 has so many cool little things you can do...GPS, USB, 3.2 mp camera and video, more email options (yea blackberry connect support!) and loads of disk space for music or photo. And this is only a few items I've listed. It fits comfortably in your hand and super super fast! Last but not least...the EA Sports Tiger Woods golf is a must for the long airport visits for the business traveler. This phone has enough weight and is made with strong enough materials that it could be used as a weapon if thrown with enough juice. I'm almost afraid to see what the next revision is in fear they may screw it up! Great job Nokia! You have my business...for a while at least. :)

Got a lot of tips and tricks reading howardforums. Not in 3G area and probably won't be for some time but WiFi works great. Push email works great. GPS with google maps works good. A very solid, well made phone, typical Nokia.

The e71 is a great all-around smartphone. Lots of software applications available for the S60. Love the build and fast UI.

5 of 5 Best smartphone I have ever had Tuesday, August 12, 2008
A Customer from Salt Lake City, Utah
This is the best smartphone I have ever had. It has more functionality and smoother operation that either Palm or Windows based smartphones that I have had. Because it is more capable, it might be a bit more confusing to set up, simply because of the many more options available. But that only increases its desirability in my estimation.
