I've bought quite a few of these from NetGear, in both the 5 and 8 port variety. They work great right out of the box. Note that it is a switch rather than a router - this means that your modem rather than the box will be giving an internet address. This makes life far easier when networking devices, particularly in the corporate environment. Was this review helpful?

I outgrew my original 4 port router and the Netgear 8 Port 10/100 Desktop Switch- FS608NA solved that problem. Instead of changing my router or its location and running multiple new cables, this switch allowed me to use the single cable in my office to plug in the 5 additional items I wanted to add to the wired side of my network. All I had to do was plug everything in and I was connected...no software, no setup, just a simple fix and the price was right. I have not detected any loss of speed on any computer, hard drive or my Slingbox, which I expected since I'm jamming all that stuff down a single line. I guess I'm easily amazed. Truly plug and play. I bought it because I had used all the hard-wired ports on my wireless router and needed more (new X Box in the house). I simply hooked this into my cable modem and hooked the wireless router into one of the other ports on this switch. Then I plugged in the other ethernet wires into the switch. I have used this NETGEAR 8 port switch in numerous places, networks and with differing configurations. It has always performed flawlessly and reliably. It is exactly what I needed and is an excellent value. The unit's auto-sensing of the network connection makes hooking into the network mistake-proof.
