J&R Exclusive
Lalo Schifrin's thrilling big-band soundtrack for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE boosted the TV show's initial ratings. Even decades removed, the program's cult status owes a great debt to Schifrin's score. The theme, "Mission: Impossible," should be instantly recognizable to most listeners. Here, Schifrin blends together Latin riffs and blaring brass with a healthy dose of musical intrigue. On this tune, the solo section--featuring an electric piano--is really a 12-bar blues. This piece is also scored in 5/4 time, proving that odd time signatures can be just as captivating and funky as 4/4 or "common" time. Other tracks, such as "Jim on the Move" and "The Plot," combine Argentinean music with blues and period rock. In contrast, "Cinnamon" and "Danger" are more overtly jazzy. These tracks contain lush string arrangements and elegant horn solos. One of the most salient features of this soundtrack is the doubling of the bass by the piano in the lower register. This distinctive technique defines the overall sound of the show's timelessly intriguing music.

Engineer: Hank Cicalo

Artist Overview
Argentina-born Lalo Schifrin is one of the most respected film composers of the 20th century. Throughout his long career, he fused the influences of classical music, jazz, Latin, and funk to create a wide variety of moods. He's responsible for such classic film scores as COOL HAND LUKE, BULLITT, DIRTY HARRY, and countless others. Beyond his film work, though, he's also an accomplished jazz musician who has performed and recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Stan Getz, and many more. As the century turned, Schifrin continued working on new material, but his moody/funky '70s work had become hugely influential to a new generation of artists in hip-hop, trip-hop, and electronica.
