In turning the story of the famed Paris nightclub the Moulin Rouge into a modern day fable celebrating love and creative inspiration, Baz Luhrman creates an accompanying soundtrack that exalts 20th century pop composers at the same time as it's blurring their musical boundaries. It's an approach best exemplified by dramatic leads Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor during the gorgeous "Elephant Love Melody," an endearing call-and-response during which lines from songs by the Beatles, Kiss, U2, Wings, and Thelma Houston are tossed back and forth as the duo argue over their burgeoning emotional involvement.
Elsewhere, Kidman quotes Madonna ("Material Girl") and Marilyn Monroe ("Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend") amidst brassy, Vegas-like arrangements and dance beats. McGregor also pulls off a gorgeous version of Elton John's "Your Song," complete with sweeping orchestration, Placido Domingo's swooping tenor, and a powerful children's chorus. Among the most interesting collaborations here are between David Bowie and Massive Attack, who perform a chilled-out trip-hop cover of the standard "Nature Boy," and the Missy Elliott-produced superstar summit of Labelle's "Lady Marmalade," featuring Lil' Kim, Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Mya. Beck and Timbaland also team up for a blipping, bleeping minimalist take on Bowie's "Diamond Dogs

5 of 5 A soundtrack so crazy, it just might work . . . Sunday, June 09, 2002
Drew from Pleasant Grove, UT

The first time I experienced Moulin Rouge, I was stunned to say the least. Who knew Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregor could sing? The thing that struck me about their voices was that they WEREN'T fantastic. They were good, and they sounded great together, but the fact that they were actors before they were singers made the experience all the better. The music on this CD, some original to the film, and some borrowed from some of the greatest songwriters of all time, was put together surprisingly tastefully and tactfully, and it's so out there that it just seems to work. It takes you to a place you haven't been since the musicals of old, and you want to stay there. Even if it takes a little getting used to at times, the music on this album is wonderful. I highly recommend this CD to any who profess to be lovers of new age, or any great music.

4 of 5 Not WONDERFUL, but wonderful Saturday, May 04, 2002
A Listener from Riverbank, California
I'll admit that Nicole Kidman's voice was not as bad as I thought it would be. Kidman and McGregor's voices did blend very well, but however, my compliments must be saved for Mr. McGregor, for his voice was indeed the most pleasing. While Kidman's voice sang notes, she lacked emotion in all the most important love songs, though expressed the emotions needed in her "One Day I'll Fly Away". Though the singers are talented, I felt the soundtrack lacked "zing". It lacked originality- I was unimpressed by what they did with the music.

5 of 5 Kidman Knocks Them Dead With A Great Voice & Perfo Sunday, January 13, 2002
Trish from Richmond, Va
When I first heard that Nicole Kidman was going to do a musical, I thought to myself, " oh no, another flop". But to my surprise, Miss. Kidman has an amazing and gorgeous voice. Along with Mr. Macgregor, they are a perfect duet and compliment each other in so many ways. When I first sat down to watch this movie, I was in a airplane flying from L.A. to New Zealand. Though the flight was a long one, I had plenty of time to watch it as many times as I wanted. I got stuck on one particular song, "Come What May", it's a beautiful ballot showing how much one man loves this woman. I am touched by the song every time that I listen to it. I advise people to go and see this movie as Nicole Kidman and Ewan Macgregor do a fantastic job! Baz did an amazing job of directing yet another success!
