 Editor's Note
Cross LA BOHÈME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle époque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.

As good as the film is, the Moulin Rouge DVD is better, a lavish, two-disc affair replete with extras. Luhrmann appears on two commentary tracks, and (much like The Matrix) a "follow the green fairy" feature takes you to mini-making-of bits in context with the movie. And if all that's not enough, just pop in the second disc, for inside looks at early script drafts (amazing!), deleted scenes (inspiring!), and just about anything else you could want to see -- including the performance of "Lady Marmalade" at the MTV Movie Awards. Outstanding disc....read the full review |

This is a flabbergasting piece of work, nakedly out there, willing to risk looking foolish because it is so in love with the head-turning possibilities of the film medium... it showcases excellent work from co-stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor as singing star-crossed lovers in turn-of-the-century Paris... - Kenneth Turan ReelViews 8 of 10 Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge is a rigorously accurate historical account of events that occurred during the period between 1899 and 1900 in Paris' infamous Moulin Rouge nightclub. Luhrmann's meticulously researched motion picture uncovers several shocking truths previously unknown to historians - for example, it seems that musical luminaries like Elton John and Paul McCartney are guilty of plagiarism - songs credited to them were originally penned by a little-known songwriter named Christian and performed at the Moulin Rouge...Well, not quite...Actually, what Luhrmann has done here is to take an historical locale (the Moulin Rouge did exist around the turn of the last century, in the heart of Monmartre) and a few real people and drop them into an entirely fictional production that uses pop hits (primarily from the '70s and '80s) to populate the soundtrack. In keeping with a recent motion picture trend that anarchonistically applies modern music to period pieces, Moulin Rouge ventures down the same trail explored by the likes of Kenneth Branagh's Love's Labour's Lost and the woefully inept A Knight's Tale...Historical purists and those who enjoy only sedate films are likely to be infuriated by what Luhrmann has done here, but who cares? We live in an age of excess, and Lurhmann takes it to the hilt. There's no area in which he holds back. With a widescreen picture, more edits than any film since Requiem for a Dream, and a soundtrack that demands digital playback, Luhrmann has fashioned the template for a new kind of musical. This is as much a summer film as The Mummy Returns, but with one important difference - it's fresher and more lively. And, while my acclaim may not be as rapturous as that of those who enjoyed it during its Opening Night world premiere at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, I am still heartily recommending it to anyone who cherishes the thought of a modern day musical spectacle. - James Berardinelli Chicago Sun-Times 9 of 10 Like almost every American college boy who ever took a cut-rate flight to Paris, I went to the Moulin Rouge on my first night in town. I had a cheap standing-room ticket way in the back, and over the heads of the crowd, through a haze of smoke, I could vaguely see the dancing girls. The tragedy of the Moulin Rouge is that by the time you can afford a better seat, you've outgrown the show..."Moulin Rouge" the movie is more like the Moulin Rouge of my adolescent fantasies than the real Moulin Rouge ever could be. It isn't about tired, decadent people, but about glorious romantics, who believe in the glitz and the tinsel--who see the nightclub not as a shabby tourist trap but as a stage for their dreams. Even its villain is a love-struck duke who gnashes his way into the fantasy, content to play a starring role however venal...The film is constructed like the fevered snapshots created by your imagination before an anticipated erotic encounter. It doesn't depend on dialogue or situation but on the way you imagine a fantasy object first from one angle and then another. Satine, the heroine, is seen not so much in dramatic situations as in poses--in postcards for the yearning mind. The movie is about how we imagine its world. It is perfectly appropriate that it was filmed on sound stages in Australia; Paris has always existed best in the minds of its admirers...The movie is all color and music, sound and motion, kinetic energy, broad strokes, operatic excess. While it might be most convenient to see it from the beginning, it hardly makes any difference; walk in at any moment and you'll quickly know who is good and bad, who is in love and why--and then all the rest is song, dance, spectacular production numbers, protestations of love, exhalations of regret, vows of revenge and grand destructive gestures. It's like being trapped on an elevator with the circus. - Roger Ebert

5 of 5 Nothing compares... Thursday, January 09, 2003 A Viewer from santa barbara, ca
I'm not a particularly sentimental person, nor am I often enthused by hollywood love stories. This movie, however, is by far, the most amazing, beautiful, powerful and pure love story I've ever seen. I could go on volumetrically, but I'll just recommend you watch it. Nothing compares.

First off, I HATE opera. I HATE musicals. Really, really detest them.
But I stumbled across this movie on satellite, about 10 or 15 minutes into it. Watched it a short while because there was nothing else interesting at the time.
WOW !! This movie is simply bizarre. I got totally caught up in it. I've watched it over and over and always enjoy it.
If you like the last 20+ years worth of pop music, elegant costumes and cinematography, and think Kidman is good-looking, you won't go wrong. (She really can sing, what a surprise.)
Funny thing is, I would think this would be my wife's cup of tea, and she won't watch it at all. Apparently it is an acquired taste, and if you won't try it out a bit, it won't "take." Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Metamorphosized Modern Musical Tuesday, February 12, 2002 albedriense from Orlando, FL
Moulin Rouge is truly a feast for the eyes, a challenge for your aestetics and a tickle to your ears. If you don't like to be tickled watched it without sound. This monument to pop art -mainly to music- is constantly jogging your mind, reminding you of tunes you've loved or hated, but most probably remember. And it uses them so relevantly and in such a new way that it's more a metamorphosis of these songs. Take for example the scene where they sing "Lady Mermalade" and "Smells Like Team Spirit" as a quodlibet (that is simultaneously). The effect of the women singing the latter and the men singing the second is a reminder of how confortable even today, men are women could still choose to feel comfortable with their traditional, male-chauvinistic roles, and love it... at least for a performance. The two greatest metamorphosis might be the hilarious scene using "Like a Virgin" and the moving, dramatic treatment of Roxanne (by the Police). The leading male, Ewan McGregor, shows excellent vocal abilities. Nicole Kidman too, specially for being the first time singing, although falls short sometimes, specially singing beside Ewan. The rest of the cast performs excedingly well, ensemble or not. The plot of the story within a story, within a story works perfect for the story. I'm reminded of Grand Opera, specially because Operas used to use music of the time they were created. Can't help but think that, if Rossini were alive now, he would've created something quite close to Moulin Rouge, and also become rich and retire young as he did in his time. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Spectacular Friday, January 04, 2002 Rick_Raven from Kansas City, MO
While a bit weary to see this film after the roller coaster that was Romeo & Juliet, I was dazzled by the beauty and quality of this film. It is truly sensational and I would not be a bit surprised to see it at the top of the Oscars list. The DVD is remarkable as well providing hours of entertainment with some very unique features. All in all I give it a 5 and hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. Was this review helpful?

Money has no taste, and this overwrought film proves it. No matter how much you may spend on it, junk is still junk--an apt description of this entire mess. I wanted to trash the disk after ten minutes, but my wife urged me to let it play--surely it would begin to make sense. It didn't. Pure pretentious pap. If you want to see a real musical, may I suggest "Singin' in the Rain"? Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A Kaleidoscope of Talent Thursday, December 20, 2001 Marie Meadowcroft from Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina
The cinematography is incredible; all major characters are acted with the utmost of expertise; the sound and vivid video are overwhelming. This film introduced me to a wonderful talent I was unaware Nicole Kidman possessed; if any other actress wins the Golden Globe for a musical, something's terribly wrong with the voters perception. I have always been a drama and suspense fan so I wasn't prepared to be as swept into this musical as I was. Whatever the viewer's preferences, I can't imagine anyone not sighing, applauding, crying and cheering while being treated to this "Kaleidoscope of Talent". Was this review helpful?

Moulin Rouge is quite a bizarre experience for the senses...i was completely overtaken by the amazing look and sound of this film....the cinematography takes you out of your seat and puts you right into decadent Paris at the turn of the century...amazing sets...and the colours are gorgeous...the music was very inventive and dance numbers quite comic and original...as for the songs...Ewan and Nicole surprisingly held their own and the supporting cast give a enjoyable performance...the plot was a bit simple and predictable...but i would think it'd have to be in order for you to absurb the sights and sounds...credit the ones who made this movie possible...a bold and wondrous attempt...certainly different...certainly entertaining....and certain to pull some nominations in the art and music categories at this year's oscars... Moulin Rouge is like no musical ever made. It is quite strange at the begining (flying pixies and John Leguizamo as a alcholic midget...are just a few oddities), but if you can handle the first twenty minutes of the movie you are in for an extravigant feast of sensory input the likes of which you have never seen. The settings are so lush, and the dance and song numbers so lively and satisfying, you can't help but get caught up in the story and spirit of the film. The story in and of itself is quite simple, but the passion with which it is told and acted, give it life. Ewan McGregor shocks you with his fantastic singing voice and heartfelt performance, and Nicole Kidman also suprises with a quite lovely voice and great chemistry with her leading man. Moulin Rouge will make you giddy, its one of those rare films that gets your heart pumping and your emotions flowing. You will be singing after watching this movie. I would recommened that to do this movie justice you only view it with an excellent sound system and on a good big screen television, anything less and your depriving yourself of all splendor and impact this movie has to offer, which would be a shame.

This movie is excellent, you just have to get through the first 30 minutes where it is really weird and may be a bit boring... but the story starts after 30 min.. trust me. Good movie. Was this review helpful?
