Notes & Personnel Info
Compilation producers: Jeff Moskow, Harry Weinger.
Includes liner notes by Adam White.
Few record labels in history have had the impact of Berry Gordy's Motown. It's a sound, a spirit, and a hit-making machine. In the 1960s, if the Number One song on the Billboard charts wasn't by the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, it was likely by the Temptations, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, or another Motown artist. Wonder, Gaye, Lionel Richie, and others continued the tradition through the '70s and into the '80s, Boyz II Men dominated the charts in the early '90s, and as the 21st century dawned, the Motown name was still a formidable force in R&B and soul.
With more than two dozen tracks, MOTOWN #1'S collects a remarkable cross-section of the biggest hits that the label unleashed over the course of nearly 50 years. These include the Temptations' harmony-laden "My Girl," the Supremes' dramatic "Stop! In the Name of Love," and the Four Tops' kinetic, sunny "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)." Also featured is the unbridled soul energy of Jr. Walker & the All-Stars' "Shotgun" and the Marvin Gaye's haunting milestone "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." As many times as these songs have been heard, they still sound unbelievably fresh and beautiful.

5 of 5 MOTOWN ROCKS!!! Monday, May 17, 2004
A Listener from LA, CA

This CD is an incredible collection of 26 number one hits. What a better way to listen to all your favorite classic music and remember the good old days. Since I bought the album, I can’t stop listening to it. The CD includes some of my favorite and very talented artists of all time like The Supremes, The Temptations, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross and Boyz II Men. It doesn’t get better than this! You don’t have to go hunting around to collect your favorite songs from here and there; it’s conveniently grouped together in this compilation album. I would personally recommend this album to any music lover, because without these talents included in the CD, music wouldn’t be where it is today. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and Thanks to Universal/Motown for putting together such a great piece.

5 of 5 Motown's best compilation yet Thursday, May 06, 2004
SugrPie_HunyBunch from Los Angeles, CA
I love this new Motown 1's album! It has so many songs on it and they are all good ones (since they have been #1 hits at one time..makes sense:). I especially love the bonus track for "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." And of course having the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and Jackson 5 on it doesn't hurt either. I listne to this album a lot when I'm cleaning up around the house or just whenever I wanna be in a happy mood. I can always turn to this cd to lift my spirits! And I can play the whole cd without having to skip to any other songs.

I picked this album up when I heard about it from an email I got. Let me tell you that I was not a Motown fan mostly because Im young and didn't grow up with it but this album has made me a fan. I LOVE "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "My Girl". I must say this is an awesome album! I recomend it to EVERYONE!!!

5 of 5 Music lover "essential" Wednesday, April 14, 2004
Chaotikmind from Los Angeles, CA
Everyone knows that there are a large amount of Motown compilation albums out there, but I think this is the first one that I can definitely say has all the hits and is complete so to speak. Every single track on this album was officially number one on the charts, and you can go through all 25 selections without the inconvenience of switching two disks. It even includes a few more recent artists on Motown such as Boyz II Men, and the unreleased cover of Ain’t No Moutain High Enough by Michael McDonald. This album is the perfect CD for new and old Motown fans…a must have for any music fan.
