| Steven Spielberg presents a devastating comedy that literally brings the house down on Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. The laugh-infested, gag-filled comedy casts Hanks as an uptight entertainment lawyer and Long as his laid-back cellist girlfriend. When the duo are evicted from their Manhattan high-rise by Alexander Godunov, Long's egomaniacal ex-hubby, they think their personal housing crisis is solved when they buy a picture perfect Long Island estate for a song. But the couple is soon singing the blues when they discover their dream home is actually a house of hilarious money-eating horrors - disintegrating under their feet and crumbling over their heads. Richard Benjamin directed the elaborately executed farce filled with incredible sequences of daffy destruction. The laughs and debris pile up as the never-say-money-is-no-object couple attempt to keep their relationship together even as their roof - and bank account - fall apart. An updating of MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE in which an up-and-coming entertainment lawyer takes the big step with his girlfriend and purchases a fixer-upper for a "steal." As it turns out, the "steal" is really a "rip-off" and everything that can go wrong, does.
