Great gadget to help keep track of passwords, help with login, etc. It took a little effort but it works with Firefox also. No complaints yet. It works as advertised.

5 of 5 Great Time Saver! Saturday, December 22, 2007
    Steven Fischer from Monsey, NY
It is hard to keep track of all of one's login names and passwords. The Microsoft USB Fingerprint Reader is a great tool and time saver. It saves on having to keep flipping through files or papers on my desk to find a login or password that I could not remember.

1 of 5 No drivers for Vista 64, MS does not support itsel Friday, December 14, 2007
    Gary from Ohio
I have owned this FPR for over a year now.....however it sits in the drawer because as of 12/2007, Microsoft will not produce a driver for Vista 64. Yes, that's right....NO VISTA64 SUPPORT. Drivers will not even load....you get the Vista error. Microsoft has a 32 bit version out....but again they have for over 1 year now not released nor show any signs of releasing a 64 bit Vista version. Shame on them.

    5 of 5 Great for your Non-Techies Wednesday, September 26, 2007
    Jaartee from Tucson, AZ
I am a security professional, and I require my family to log onto the home computer(s). Considering the value of personal information in my banking software and for identity theft, I also require strong passwords. My family now has 15 character strong passwords, and use their fingertip to log on. I am happy, because if my machine is stolen then someone has only insured hardware. The encrypted data is protected. The family is happy because they only have to have their finger and a PIN.

    5 of 5 Fingerprint Reader Tuesday, September 25, 2007
Charles L. Caragol from Bloomington, IN
Very nice gadget. I always get upset at having to use a different password at different websites because I know that I will forget those I do not use often. This gadget takes care of that.

    1 of 5 Crash IE 7 Monday, September 03, 2007
    A Customer from Austin, TX
Used for over the past year and it workED great with IE 6.0. Now with IE 7.0 and even with new driver from Microsoft, this MFR will crash IE 7.0 and slow down IE 7.0 whether you used WinXP or Vista. Best test site is to use eBay, crash very very often! P.S. It will NOT work with any other Internet browsers. As of today 9/4/07, this product is strictly for used with IE 6.0 period.

5 of 5 Convenience at your fingertips Sunday, July 22, 2007
A Customer from New York, NY
The hardware piece is well designed, rugged and works very nice. The software that comes in the package is very easy to use. The installation procedure is very straightforward: insert the CD in the drive, click the Next button a couple of times, plug the fingerprint reader, restart the computer. The day-by-day usage is also very simple, since the program interface is very intuitive: on a logon screen, touch the reader, select the fields, fill them and it's done. With all this easiness, after a week you just can't stand typing your passwords anymore on logon screen or websites. The worst con about the product is now over: the reader does work with Mozilla Firefox web browser. All you must do is just installing an add-on, available at http://www.fingerauth.com. Unfortunately, the reader can be used only on Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. There's also no support for the 64 bits version of these systems. Although the installation program and manual states all the time that the fingerprint reader isn't a security feature, it should not fear the average user of buying and using it: the fingerprints and the logon data are encrypted and, if you don't use it to save the password of your bank account that holds 1 million dollars, there's no need to worry about it. The security measures taken by MS are enough for the average user.

5 of 5 The most useful gadget for the Web Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Unfortunately, the reader can be used only on Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. There's also no support for the 64 bits version of these systems. The most up-to-date version of the software can be found at Microsoft's website (hardware section), and as of now it's 2.0.0.1. All users should upgrade to this version, since it has more compatibility with websites and more features than the previous version. 3 of 5 Great gadget when it works Wednesday, June 27, 2007
    emil_schauer from N Ridgeville, Ohio
It's too bad that Microsoft peddles a Fingerprint Reader that doesn't work on every webpage. I use three banks and mutual fund companies that request the logon on the first page and on the next page the password. Unfortunately the software can't handle it. On one bank it doesn't even recognize the request at all. MS Support wasn't much help. After hours of fiddling around the technician(?) finaly said the Fingerprint Reader can't handle multiple webpages.

4 of 5 Convenient but just a little flaky Monday, April 23, 2007
A Customer from Palo Alto, CA
I use the fingerprint reader at home on Windows Vista and like the convenience of not having to type my complicated password (especially early in the morning before a cup of coffee). The product works usually very well with several windows programs. The software hangs up once a week or so and requires a reboot to recognize my fingerprint. That's not a big deal (I can still type the password to get to my programs). Overall a pretty good product for a reasonable price, very simple to install and use.

1 of 5 does not work on a domain Wednesday, July 19, 2006
    Kevin from Miami, Florida
I was very dissatisfied with this product as the promotional product details do not state anywhere that the device does not work on a domain. I only discovered this to be true when going through the installation and setup process. If you are working on a domain do not purchase this product

    5 of 5 Outstanding Item Monday, June 05, 2006
    Chris from Illinois
Tired of using all of those passwords, and forgetting most of them. Don't do it the old way, use this fingure scanner and save your self the time, and headaches. Outstanding product. I am really glad I bought this. Stop thinking about getting a fingure print scanner for your passwords, and buy this one. Its outstanding. You willn't regret it. I have not.

    5 of 5 Super TOOL Monday, May 15, 2006
    Grammie from Green Cove, Florida
Loaded with XP with absolutely no problem.Directions are clear and easy. Software superb. Was up and running in just a couple of minutes. User friendly. NO manual needed. Just have to type in password at each site to program and that is it. So impressed and happy that I bought this. GREAT buy and real headache reliever!! It is for ease of everyday passwords........not security of sensitive passwords!

2 of 5 Interesting device, but software glitchy Monday, March 27, 2006
    SteveLS from Unknown, OH
I've purchased and returned the Microsoft Fingerprint Reader (MFR) twice. The 1st time because I was unhappy with it's log-in accuracy, the 2nd time because of numerous bugs and glitches with the Persona software that powers the device. The 2nd time around, the accuracy was much better, I suspect because during fingerprint registration I pressed harder down on the screen, giving the MFR a better snapshot of my fingerprint. However, I encountered these annoyances: 1) Not all websites work correctly with the MFR, or they partly work. This is a small number, but it was annoying. 2) The software that powers the MFR caused Internet Explorer to crash several times, usually at websites where the device didn't recognize the log-in screens. 3) The Persona software does not encrypt your passwords/user ID's, making it a target for hackers. Oddly enough, Persona makes other fingerprint readers that DO have encryption. When Microsoft bought this particular product, they licensed the Persona software but mysteriously removed the encryption technology. 4) The red glow that emits from the device is annoying, especially in a dark room. 5) No Firefox compatibility. I love to tinker with new gadgets, and found the MFR to be a fun device to use. But the glitchy software compelled me to return the MFR and give it a poor review here. If I ever get another Fingerprint Reader, it won't be this one.

2 of 5 No Domain Login. Wednesday, October 05, 2005
    Eric from Austin, TX
The main reason I purchased this was to log into my computer here at the office. The fingerprint reader DOES NOT SUPPORT logging into a computer that is connected to a domain! It works fantastically other than that. If your are not using it on a computer with a domain I highly recommend. It works and works fast.

4 of 5 Great little device, XP Only though Thursday, April 14, 2005
    Danny from Gilbert, AZ
This thing works like a charm, and I feel like James Bond using it. The password management is very easy to use, simply define what fields on the website you want it to fill out, and which button to "push", it even highlights the screen for the field you're working with. There are a few things that I wish it did do. The fingerprints are tied directly to the windows account. So if everyone who uses your computer typically uses just the one account, there's no way for each of them to have their own fingerprints scanned and for the system to know who to log into the website as. You'll have to set up different windows user accounts. It will switch between them if you have "Fast User Switching" enabled, but unfortunately I work in a network with a domain, and "Fast User Switching" isn't available on computers connected to a domain. ----- It's this functionality that is probably why it's for XP machines only. I was hoping to put it on a bunch of the Win2K machines I have here. It would have been nice if the Product Description mentioned that. It should be called "Microsoft USB Fingerprint Reader for Windows XP"

5 of 5 Future technology from SF movies is finally here!! Saturday, March 26, 2005
    A Customer from Arlington, VA
Registering logon information and logging in cannot be easier than this!!!! After installing the software and registering your fingerprint which take just minutes, log on gets as simple as it gets. This device is simple, well-constructed, accurate, and affordable solution to the hassle of remembering different login names and passwords. If you have more than one person using the computer, you can create another Windows XP user account and let him/her use this device from it without worrying about logon information being mixed up. The information you register including your fingerprint doesn't go over to different user account from Win XP. I believe you can even carry this device to be also used at your work or on notebook. All you have to do is carry it whenever you're gonna use different computer. However, there are two problems: 1. Only 1 logon for one website unless you logon with different user account from Windows XP. 2. If you mistype password as you register your logon information, you're not able to use fingerprint logon for that site unless Microsoft releases a patch.

This has got to be one of the best pc accessories to come along in a long time! Makes logging into various websites a breeze. No more digging out the old 3x5's to look up passwords! Set-up was simple and it works like a charm. I have shown it to many friends and they all want one. Glad i got mine.

5 of 5 Fantastic! ...And long overdue Friday, December 10, 2004
    Lee C from Harrisburg, PA
I've always wanted a password manager for my ever growing myriad of account credentials, but I wanted one from a trusted source--and I didn't want to have to type in credentials to get to my managed credentials. This Microsoft fingerprint reader is the answer! I found it on the Microsoft Web site, under hardware, and there is a great demo video (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/features/docs/fingerprint.html) of the software setup and hardware use. Trust me, the software is what makes this product superior to others. It's ability to detect fields and buttons on software and Web interfaces is where the value lies. I just got this reader and within mere minutes, I was using it to log in to various Web sites (Buy.com) and even Microsoft Outlook. It's not just for Web sites. I love it!

    5 of 5 Makes website login a breeze! Sunday, December 05, 2004
    tekgirl from Paramus, NJ
The fingerprint reader from MS is fantastic! Setup was pretty easy. I highly recommend this product for anyone who needs to access websites with login info required! It is recommended that you do not use the fingerprint reader with a site that contains your sensitive personal info, such as banking sites. Downside - only works with IE - NO Firefox support.

The fingerprint reader from MS is fantastic! Setup was pretty easy, although at first, a driver conflict caused the reader not to initialize. Once I resolved that issue, it was full speed ahead ;) No more remembering 20 different logins for 20 different sites. Downside - only works with IE - NO Firefox support.

5 of 5 Excellent accuracy, simple to use Sunday, October 31, 2004
Josh "techman" from Long Island, NY
This fingerprint reader from Microsoft is very accurate. Setup is very easy. To set it up, you install the software and restart, now the screen comes up. It recommends you have it read at least two fingers. It reads each finger four times. Then it is finished. Logging into website's is so easy! All you do is place your finger on the reader and it logs you in. The only downside I see is if you have multiple accounts for the same site. You can only use the reader for one account. For only $49, this is a great buy!
