This is a mono headset.
</p></p>
Software: It pretty much forces you to install Windows Live Messenger. Ugh.
</p></p>
The help software is a bit hard to find and then ... once found ... is fairly skimpy.
</p></p>
Switching between this headset and other headsets is a pain and sometimes requires an entire reboot. That's more Windows fault than this headset.
</p></p>
Hardware: Audio quality is fair-to-good for reception. Output seems to be better than input. Reception is a bit static-y. Range seems to be about 20 feet in my basement. I often have trouble hearing what other people are saying. A wired headset produces stereo (this is, obviously, a mono headset) as well as better sound in my opinion.
</p></p>
This headset does work with USB 1.1 connections with no discernible difference in audio quality.
</p></p>
Having said this, this headset has far superior audio quality than a bluetooth headset. This device, thank god, is not bluetooth.
</p></p>
Comfort: It takes a bit of getting used to ... but it can be comfortable. Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 Good functionality, Poor sound quality Friday, April 27, 2007 amandameerdink from Redmond, WA
I needed a wireless USB headset to use with Ventrillo in order to chat while playing online games, so I purchased this product, for lack of other options.
Unfortunately, the sound quality is horrible. It is NOT crystal-clear as the description implies... not by a long shot. My $30 wired Logitech headset makes my voice clear like I'm speaking in the same room, but this headset makes me sound like I am calling into a radio station from a cell phone. It also sounded like I was on the other side of the room from the microphone.
My guildmates laughed at how horrible my outbound voice quality was, so I ditched the Microsoft headset and went back to using my broken Logitech headset.
Everything else about this headset is fine... I like that the receiver is wired so you can position it. The headset itself was easy to get used to, and everything else about it was great. Unfortunately, the bad sound quality renders this item completely useless to me.
Seriously, I would only use it if my Logitech headset ceased to stop picking up my voice. As it is, the speakers are broken, the earpieces are falling off, and I have to wear it around my neck, but I still would rather this cheap broken headset than the Microsoft wireless headset. All I can say to the product development team is LEARN 2 USABILITY TEST.
I have yet to find an affordable wireless USB headset that is Ventrillo-friendly. You'd think with the huge gamer population (8.5 million playing WoW alone) there would be more interest in developing such a thing. Was this review helpful?
