I tried McAfee antivirus/security products about 8 years ago, and at the time, it was a bloated and unstable monstrosity. But recently, when my Norton Antivirus subscription was up, I couldn't find a reasonable deal on it, but did on McAfee. Well, I checked into the reviews and recent rankings, and it seemed McAfee had substantially cleaned up their product over the years (or at least recently). So, I decided to give it a try, and after a couple months now, no problems. I'm pleased with it; just as happy with it as I was with Norton.
For anyone installing antivirus programs, there are generally two super important keys to a successful outcome:
1) Completely uninstall any other or previous versions of antivirus or other resident security programs (resident means the program is always running in the background, watching for offending malware, etc).
2) Restart your computer in minimal mode, or at least shut down all running programs and processes you reasonably can (right click and exit most running processes in the system tray, etc)
3) Do not mix-match resident security products from different manufacturers (generally a bad idea) and NEVER have two resident programs of the same type running (two antivirus programs don't make you more secure, but instead, just cause system instability problems because they fight for control, if you will).
4) And generally, it's sufficient to ONLY run an antivirus program as long as you have the Windows incoming firewall on and you're careful about what you do online.
With these tips in mind, your computer stability and performance should improve substantially. Hope this helps. Was this review helpful?

It was a very nice buy. I was always a Norton Guy, but thought of trying MCAffee since I was getting a better deal on it. I am glad that I made that decision. Norton used to choke up on my CPU and Memory and I was practically unable to do anything during the scan period.
Mcaffee is excellent , very light on the resources and digs and finds even the smallest threats and cleans them

Great product, however it was suppose to have free shipping, if you pay by pay-pal I guess you don't get the free shipping, it does not say that anywhere, and Buy.com does not have any customer service support, yes , it is true after many emails and clicking on the feedback button I NEVER got any reponse not anything from them at all , except email ads to try to get me to buy more stuff. I love their prices, but I really would feel alot better if a big company like Buy.com would have actual customer support team and a phone number. Was this review helpful?

Bought two copies. One for each of the pc's. Unfortunately we experience added "delays" in doing anything on the internet with McAfee active. I had this same problem with McAfee offered through AOL as security "addon" but it caused unbearable!!! delays. I had to turn it off. However, this new purchase is better than using the AOL alternative in terms of price and less lag time with the s/w running. But at this price I can not complain... too much.
I do recommend BUY.COM and have been doing business with them in some form since 1998 in So. Cal. They are always dependable and good folks. Was this review helpful?

1. It seems kind of stupid if a software can be stupid. I have a Pc and a Mac and it considers the Mac as a security risk and I can't convince it otherwise. So now every time I start up I get a pop-up window stating there might be a security risk
2. When you try to update it you seem to get to a point where nothing is happening and it is hard to tell that anything has been updated

I switched to McAfee from Norton a few years ago and have been very pleased. With Norton it seemed like my computer was slower. I'm no techie, so in all fairness I don't know if Norton's software was to blame. Anyway, this year's McAfee product seems to be doing the job as well as previous versions have done. I'm a techno divit pron to get in trouble if left up to my own curiosity on the web. It's been more than once that I've had to format my hard drive because I clicked on something that poisoned my computer. I surfed for go carts once and caught a virus. The site advisor is worth its weight in kilobytes - it'd be worth it in terabytes. You go looking for something and if there's a big red thing next to the link, you stay away.
