 Editor's Note
With THE MATRIX, the Wachowskis have established themselves as innovative filmmakers who push the boundaries of live-action films. Like the groundbreaking STAR WARS, THE MATRIX (also the first film of a trilogy) showcases a unique visual style, one the Wachowskis achieved through an array of techniques and digital effects, some never before seen in mainstream Hollywood films. Although computer morphing technology had been used before in films such as THE ABYSS and TERMINATOR 2, the Wachowskis were the first to use "bullet time," a time-bending digital effect that utilizes both computer-generated imagery and still photography. The film itself is a complex story that aspires to mythology, focusing on a computer hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves) who searches for the truth behind the mysterious force known as the Matrix. He finds his answer with a group of strangers led by the charismatic Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). What they encounter in confronting that truth makes for a lightning-paced, eye-popping thrill ride of a movie. Packed with stunning fight scenes (choreographed by accomplished Hong Kong director Yuen Wo-Ping), astonishing visual effects, quotable lines, and a terrific supporting cast (led by Carrie-Anne Moss, in her first major Hollywood film), THE MATRIX is a bold triumph that raises the bar for all science fiction films.
 Plot Summary
An imaginative hybrid of action, kung fu, and science fiction, THE MATRIX is a hyperkinetic, mind-bending, and visionary spectacle. Keanu Reeves stars as Neo, a disaffected computer hacker seeking the answer to the question, "What is the Matrix?" His search leads him to the elusive Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who begins to enlighten Neo about the illusions of his so-called reality. In accepting the answer Morpheus provides, Neo is hurled into a futuristic world where old realities are shattered, and he must fight for his life, and the future of humanity, against a dangerous group of inhuman government agents.

What many people forget when comparing The Matrix to its own sequels (or the Star Wars prequels, or any other maligned sci-fi epic) is that this 1999 original has bad dialogue too. In fact, search the entire trilogy for a line more cringe-inducing than “Buckle up, Dorothy, ‘cause Kansas is going bye-bye,” spoken by poor, wonderful Joe Pantoliano. I don’t care how silly you think it is when Neo (Keanu Reeves) calls Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) “Trin” in Revolutions — Wizard of Oz references “updated” into snarky baby-talk are worse. Series masterminds the Wachowski Brothers, like George Lucas, are aces with yarns and anything but light-fingered as writers....read the full review |

It uses flawlessly integrated special effects and animation to visualize regions of cyberspace..." 03/31/1999 p.48 ReelViews 9 of 10 There's no sophomore jinx for the Wachowski Brothers. Andy and Larry, a pair of obviously talented film makers, have returned to theaters with The Matrix, a science fiction thriller that is every bit the match of their debut effort, Bound, for tension, excitement, and intelligence. In an era when movie scripts (especially those pigeonholed into the science fiction genre) are becoming increasingly more stupid and special effects reliant, the Wachowskis prove that style and substance do not have to be mutually exclusive...The Matrix offers a little something for everyone. The die-hard science fiction fan will discover a plot that mixes and matches both new and old conventions of the genre in a compelling fashion. Action aficionados will find that there's no shortage of electric excitement, whether it's in the form of hand-to-hand kung fu-type fights or shoot-outs with seemingly limitless ammunition. There's also betrayal, a little romance, some humor, and a moral dilemma or two, all wrapped into a well-produced package. As I stated earlier, the way in which the Wachowskis choose to resolve everything seems slightly contrived, but, in the overall scheme of things, that's a small price to pay for one of the most enjoyable science fiction thrillers to reach the screen in months. - James Berardinelli Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10 "The Matrix" is a visually dazzling cyberadventure, full of kinetic excitement, but it retreats to formula just when it's getting interesting. It's kind of a letdown when a movie begins by redefining the nature of reality, and ends with a shoot-out. We want a leap of the imagination, not one of those obligatory climaxes with automatic weapons fire...I've seen dozens if not hundreds of these exercises in violence, which recycle the same tired ideas: Bad guys fire thousands of rounds, but are unable to hit the good guy. Then it's down to the final showdown between good and evil--a martial arts battle in which the good guy gets pounded until he's almost dead, before he finds the inner will to fight back. Been there, seen that (although rarely done this well)...Keanu Reeves goes for the impassive Harrison Ford approach, "acting" as little as possible. I suppose that's the right idea. Laurence Fishburne finds a balance between action hero and Zen master..."The Matrix" did not bore me. It interested me so much, indeed, that I wanted to be challenged even more. I wanted it to follow its material to audacious conclusions, to arrive not simply at victory, but at revelation. I wanted an ending that was transformational, like "Dark City's," and not one that simply throws us a sensational action sequence. I wanted, in short, a Third Act. - Roger Ebert

5 of 5 Incredible Movie Monday, October 09, 2006 Scotty P. from Roach, Missouri
I was stunned the first time I saw this movie! I wasn't interested in it when it first came out in theatres. In fact, I never saw it until my sister rented it. We watched it on a little 15 or 16 inch screen. I loved every minute of it. Of course, I like it even more now that I've seen it again on a respectable screen. The plot is great. It seems so much more interesting than most movie plots these days. Violence and Language (not for kids). Great Movie! Was this review helpful?

This movie would make Philip K. Dick proud. While the special effects are undeniably amazing, and will continue that way for years to come, there's more to this movie than just some cool action scenes. The plot is very well developed, and seems actually possible (to the open-minded). Some are detured by the complexity of it, but The Matrix is well worth watching a few times to figure out. A must have for every DVD collection. Was this review helpful?

Keanu Reeves is probably the worst actor in the world but I have got to hand it to him on this one. He does an excellent job in this movie. He should definitely stick to these types of roles. You know the ones that do not involve British accents. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Best sci-fi movie yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Saturday, March 11, 2000 A Viewer from New York NY
The Matrix provides an action packed 2 hours of fun! Special effects are the best since Star Wars! Great storyline! Its the kind of story line that leaves small things out and hide them in odd places making every time you watch it better and better! Keanu Reeves & Laurence Fishburne are the idle acters for this role and there acting is spectacular! On a scale from 1-10 I would give it 20 because it is an absolutely Awesome Sci-Fi film!! I say buy it for yourself and a friend! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Acting was the only fall for this awesome movie Wednesday, March 08, 2000 Clinton from Washington, District of Columbia
The Matrix has a creative plot line with incredible special effects. Everyone must agree that the people who did the movie did a great job. The fact that Keanu Reaves only speaks in one syllable words is a disadvantage to the movie, but definitely one worth watching. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Food for thought Wednesday, February 16, 2000 pjd from Brooklyn, New York
What struck me most about this film is the concept. I won't go in to details (in case you haven't seen it), but it's one of those movies that makes you think: 'woah.' I, too, dislike Keanu Reeves and his poor acting skill (HOW has he made it this far?) and yet this movie still makes an impression upon me. Hmm... makes ya' think... Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Matrix delivers, but not for everyone... Monday, February 14, 2000 A Viewer from Sacramento, California
The Matrix is a visually stunning experience that will make you think differently about techology and mortality, and in a very believable way. The acting is weak, (Keanu Reeves that is), the soundtrack can be rough at times, and the probes in the back of the neck are less than pleasant, but all in all, a very entertaining movie to watch. I have seen it 11 times, and I highly recommend it for any sci-fi buffs. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A masterpiece of the Sci-Fi genre Monday, February 14, 2000 Earl from Charlotte, NC
This film is without a doubt the best film of the decade. No matter how many times I watch it...I never tire of it. It would have gotten a 10 except that Keanu's poor acting almost killed the movie. Visually stunning and appealing for anyone with even the least amount of good taste. Was this review helpful?

This is a powerful spiritual movie disguished as an action thriller! Everyone's a winner. No matter what your perspective you will find something worth remembering from this movie. Too bad the spiritual truths have to be buried under SF non-sense to make it pass the 'wisdom' of Hollywood. The truths hidden in plan sight will delight those with eyes to see, and ears to hear. 4 of 5 Shades of Videodrome Sunday, January 02, 2000 jeffc2 from Mesa, AZ
Excellent synthesis of japanese anime, martial arts, science fiction and surrealism. A modern Videodrome (James Woods), without the ethical questions and skillful acting. Reeves gives an adequate performance, but is thankfully overshadowed by the film's story. Overall, the best science fiction/action film made in years, but average acting and simplistic good vs. evil storyline will relegate it to 'cult classic' status. Was this review helpful?

What a movie! Quickly became one of my top 10 of all time. Not many films can match this amazingly put-together movie that combines Sci-Fi, Action, Japanimation art techniques, and Drama. This is Keanu Reeves at his best, but I can't erase 'Bill and Ted' from my mind whenever he speaks. Brilliant flick - see it as soon as you can. You'll feel like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole. This movie has had such a profound effect on me, I can't even begin to explain it. However, in terms of the movie itself: BRILLIANCE. Surprisingly, Keanu Reeves actually *acts* for once, and Laurence Fishburne was casted perfectly. The action scenes will make you want to watch them over and over, and there are *plenty* of them. Plot is one of the most awe-inspiring ones to hit the screen in a long time. DVD is spectacularly done, including the dialogues and everything. *MUST BUY* for all DVD users; this movie *will* take advantage of your system. Was this review helpful?

The less you know about The Matrix, the better. It is best enjoyed if you have no clue what it's about. You should also make very effort to see it on the best quality video and audio system that one of your friend's owns :). If you hate action, you might not enjoy the movie as much, but forget thinking that it's your typical action flik. I noticed someone else say that this movie was only a '7' and only Star Wars movies could be '10'. A year ago I would have agreed. However, the Matrix simply kicks EpisodeI's butt for sheer entertainment value. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, so keep in mind that I like George Lucas' creations a bunch. I'll mention that many people told me that the movie would 'mess with yer mind' or that is was hard to follow. Don't be intimidated by these sorts of comments as I disagree with these claims. The movie is not that complicated and it's easy to keep up with the story, unless you leave the room. All in all, I have to give the directors kudos for not trying to dumb down the audience or provide them with too much information that isn't important to the story. They go on a little long with the 'explanation', but not annoyingly long. The rest is pure bliss. The only action sequences I've seen as exciting as in The Matrix are the jedi saber battle scenes in Star Wars: EpisodeI. The Matrix is story-telling in league with George Lucas himself. 5 of 5 One of the BEST Sci-Fi movies of the decade!! Wednesday, November 24, 1999 Neo-romancer from Cheshire, Connecticut
This movie had it all...well just about. Okay I admit that the plot was a little much in some respects. BUT WHO CARES?! The special effects rocked! Some of the characters (Trinity) particularly rocked. As a professional digital artist and all around techno-freak, I LOVED IT!

5 of 5 AWESOME MOVIE... Monday, November 22, 1999 Chris from New York, NY
One of the most intriguing films made in the past few years. Not just is it packed with action, the idea behind the film is great. Although not necessarily an original idea, the ability of the production crew to transform it onto a screen is amazing. Definitely a revolutionary film. Different type of movie from Star Wars all together... A MUST SEE!!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 The graphics really pull you in Friday, November 19, 1999 Paul Nguyen from Dallas TX
The special effects really makes the movie,
and pulls you in to where your sense of reality
breaks down as you watch it. I had some problems
with the premise that the computers were using
people for *energy* (in BTUs). It would have been
a lot better they explained that the computers
were using humans for their brains, creativity,
or analytical powers. But no!! Instead, the
computers spend a huge amount of energy (food,
water, etc) just to get a few BTUs back???????? Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Let's not go overboard here people Saturday, November 13, 1999 Chris from Detroit, MI
The Matrix was a good movie, no doubt. But definitely not the GREATEST movie ever as some people here seem to think it is. The special effects, music, and concept are great, but anyone who thinks the plot is hard to follow must be a complete moron. Personally I think they explained everything much too thoroughly; a little confusion would have been nice. The acting also left much to be desired. All in all a good, entertaining flick, but I can't see sitting down to watch it more than two or three times. Was this review helpful?

The Matrix is a very good attempt by Hollywood to capture the essence which is the genre 'Cyber Punk'. The Cinemagraphic work in this movie is amazing, the special effects and the action scenes will blow you away time and again. The plot thickens and gets thicker. 4 of 5 Good, but not as good as it could have been Monday, November 08, 1999 Kung Fuer from New York
The visual effects were great. The idea was good. The acting... was not too bad. The Kung Fu could have been cleaned up a bit. i must admit, i did enjoy the movie. But after watching it again, i realized what it was missing. The movie failed to develop its ideas and concentrated on making it just plain violent fun. Its good, but not that good. worth the movie ticket and 2 hours but not the 'greatest movie ever' praise. And why did Keanu fly away at the end? it destroyed consistency of the movie. The shootout's are riveting, the cliffhanger death scenes are nail bitting and it is a intelligent film making marvel, with a spice of futuristic techological genius. Was this review helpful?

Using an idea at least as old as Plato (more than 2000 years old), that we do not truly exist in the world, but are instead a part of an existential dream, the scriptwriters already display their innane lack of talent. Then, apparently for spice, the writers decide the movie needs poor acting, a cheesy and unnecessary romance story, and unnecessary action scenes and gratuitous violence. Sure, action is nice, but when it occurs with no discernable purpose....
Any part of the movie that might possibly have been decent was utterly ruined by Keanu Reeves's blank stare and slack jaw. Perhaps the movie doesn't deserve a 1, but with talentless actors, writers, a movie that rests entirely on the shoulders of its special effects is destined to fall. Just look at the movie 'Plan Nine from Outer Space' to see what I mean. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent, excellent movie. Saturday, October 30, 1999 Charles Art from Ann Arbor, MI
This is more of a rebuttal to Robert Shaw's review below than a review in itself. For one, the acting was far from terrible. While true, Reeves' acting is hardly Oscar-worthy, it IS his best performance to date and I have seen much worse in bigger films than this. Ironically, the movies you say deserved a 10 (Star Wars) actually had worse acting, with Phantom Menace's being absolutely terrible. Plus, I wouldn't see a movie more than once unless it was 9 or higher, and I saw the Matrix three times in theaters. So use that to judge. Was this review helpful? Click here to see all 115 reviews
