| Mad Men: A Musical Companion (1960-1965) collects some of those years' best examples of vocal pop and rock & roll, with a little bit of soul, bossa nova, and jazz thrown in for good measure. This is a solid, enjoyable collection, bridging Ricky Nelson's "Travelin' Man," Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar," and Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd's "Desafinado." While it doesn't quite capture the seismic cultural shifts of the Mad Men era, the collection does include a few slightly offbeat choices, such as Lloyd Price's "Lady Luck" and Brook Benton's "Frankie & Johnny," along with more expected tracks like Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual," Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe," and Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs' "Wooly Bully." ~ Heather Phares | |
