The Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router is really four devices in one box. First, there's the dual-band Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together at up to gigabit speeds. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

We've also included a Storage Link that lets you easily add gigabytes of storage space onto your network using readily available USB 2.0 hard drives -- or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient way to access your portable data files. The built-in Media Server streams music, video, and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP compatible media adapter. And you can get to your files from anywhere in the world through the Internet.

The Access Point built into the Router uses a dual-band version of the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios for each band, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce ""dead spots"" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signals travel farther, maintaining wireless connections much farther than standard Wireless-G.

With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. It works great with standard Wireless-G, -A, and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the router can increase the throughput even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds much faster than standard Wireless-G. But unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable this double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the "good neighbor" mode ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up the radio band.

Since the Router can operate in both the 2.4 and 5 gigahertz radio bands at the same time, it effectively doubles your available wireless bandwidth. For instance, you could set up your network to handle video streaming on one radio band, and use the other band for simultaneous data transfers -- avoiding any interference or collisions that would degrade the video performance.

To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

The incredible speed of Wireless-N and gigabit wired networking is ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and Voice over IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams through the network at the same time, with no degradation in performance. With the Linksys Wireless-N Storage Link Router at the center of your home or office network, you can easily add storage, share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers and multi-player games, and run media-intensive applications at amazing speeds, without the hassle of stringing wires!

5 of 5 Linksys WRT610N great router, great price Thursday, April 16, 2009

This product came highly recommended. It was fast and easy to set up, works great. Big improvement over my previous Belkin.

4 of 5 Better Than the WRT54G Monday, March 09, 2009
John from Albany, OR
Given the problems I had installing the Linksys WRT54G a few years back, I was hesitant to try another Linksys product. Luckily, installation on a Windows XP system, with Comcast as a service provider, went fairly well. I still had to run the troubleshooting software to get the connection to the internet to work but the software fixed the problem on the first try.

5 of 5 A ton of features Tuesday, March 03, 2009
Kory from Provo, UT
This has worked perfectly thus far. My only complaint is it seems to have slowed down my network even if just one computer is on. I'm not positive this is the case yet. Everything else is great. The ftp server feature was a pleasant surprise to me. It all works great and is really easy to use. I haven't had my wireless drop once like my last wrt150n did daily. I love it.

5 of 5 On the expensive side of N routers but worth it Thursday, December 18, 2008
Eric from Baytown, TX
Replaced a Netgear 3500 WNDR router, also dual Draft N. Much better: Faster overall, very stable and the user interface is less buggy. DCHP reservation never really worked on Netgear which was a pain since I often access my various machines when i am away from home. Dual wireless shows as 2 separate SSIDs so you can choose which machines use which band for less interference. Has all the normal bells and whistles for a unit of that type: Port forwarding, DHCP reservation, Port trigerring, QoS, etc... QoS on the mac address LAN ports was too agressive and throttled the attached machines too much. Now just running Skype and Voip phones through the QoS app and works great even when doing a lot on the network (HD streaming, file transfers, etc.) Great range and I can use it on my boat at the end of my dock (yeah!) Very stable and I haven't had to reset it in the first weeks yet. The NAS storage thingy is OK but nowhere near as good as a real NAS. Still handy to have and I use it to automatically synch my PMP that way it always is available on the network and ready to hit the road with the latest podcasts. Once past the sticker shock it's a great unit. If you want to have a great rock stable network where you can tweak things "just right" it's for you. If you can live without some of the "fancy" options, there are better valued units out there.

4 of 5 Worked the second time around Saturday, November 29, 2008
Tom from Libertyville, IL
I too had a problem with the first unit that was shipped to me. After many hours on the chat line, and not being able to get the USB attached storage to appear on my network, they sent me another new unit. That one worked extremely well and I’ve been using it for a week. I’ve even done a disk image backup of a portable over the ‘G’ network to the USB attached drive. The Linksys support line is 866-509-7452 but I found the chat to be very good. Make sure you have your serial number as they will ask for that. I primarily bought the unit to use with a Linksys DMA2200 Media Extender. That did not go well either but Linksys was very helpful over the phone and after many setting changes, that unit is also working very well. Settings on the router to make DMA2200 work include: Basic Wireless – Set to Manual, Disable 5 GHz, Set 2.4 GHz Network Mode to Mixed, Set Radio Band to Wide, Set Wide Channel to 6, set Standard channel to 8 Set Wireless security to WPA2-Personal Advanced Wireless Settings: (on both channels) Disable Frame Burst, Set Beacon Interval to 50, RTS Threshold to 2304 On the DMA2200, go to setting and reset to factory defaults under General Tab, walk through the setup screens. Then go to your PC and add the media Extender. Then power off the extender, Power off router for 1 minute. The power on router, Reboot PC, power on Extender and everything worked for me. Once everything is working, you can go back to the router setup and enable the 5Ghz channel which now will work well with the media extender.

5 of 5 Great N Router Wednesday, September 10, 2008
A Customer from Provo, UT
This router works really well and has so many capabilities. The external hard drive feature is really handy, although not an intuitive setup. I would definitely recommend this one - just find it at a good price (<150)

4 of 5 Ok after they sent me a replacement Monday, September 08, 2008
rickleapard from Great Lakes, IL
This router by spec is awesome. Unfortunately I was having a lot of problems with my external hard drive constantly disconnecting from the network. I contacted customer support, which sucks, and they wanted me to return it to where I bought it. I told them I would rather use the manufacturer's warranty and that they replace it so I don't have to pay any shipping. The one they sent me for a replacement works as advertised. My only complaint with that is they sent me a remanufactured unit. I sent them a 2-day old unit and got a used one in it's place. Hmmm.. The router has now been online for over a week without any problems. So I am now content.

3 of 5 Nice overall, as usual first-gen Linksys products Sunday, August 10, 2008
Keith from Portland, OR
If you've had experience with Linksys networking products in the past, then you already know that this company's pre-release testing is completely laughable and it's a crap shoot whether you're going to get proper functionality of any first-gen Linksys product. This router is no different. This thing should have been held from production until firmware was actually ready to address problems that could have been found in even the most rudimentary end user testing. You can Google to find dozens of customers reporting the same issue--the router tends to reboot when both wireless bands are in use simultaneously. Linksys doesn't know whether it's a hardware overheating issue or something in the firmware, but I can confirm I can reproduce it under the same conditions others have described. Luckily for me I only need the 5ghz band, as all my devices are able to use that. I turned the other band off entirely and I get very good performance (240+ mbps consistently) with no random reboots. Signal strength is good and setup is super easy. The QoS features on the device are also very nice--the quality of my VoIP service is completely consistent now where it used to fluctuate with the volume of network traffic. The price is also quite attractive. One last "con": if you're buying this solely for the "storage link" feature, don't. The file sharing system doesn't let you set attributes on files even if you have full admin rights, and working with large files over wireless escalates the instability I described above. I tried it with 2 different USB hard drives from 2 different manufacturers with the same result. My advice if you want network attached storage is get a NAS product.
