1 of 5 WPC54GS freezes thinkpad T42p with win XP Wednesday, June 03, 2009 ekb from durango, co
First of all, I am not one of those people that normally write negative reviews. In this case, i've had so many problems with this adapter and have spent at least 8 hours so far trying to get it to work. I can't even possibly detail all that i have done here. I have an older IBM/lenovo Thinkpad T42p laptop with winXP sp 3 that has an internal cisco wireless adapter. I was looking to replace it with this Linksys WPC54GS wireless adapter for a better signal and to work with a wireless G router a distance away. The installation cd that came with the adapter caused numerous problems, and did not even recognize the adapter when it was finished. The instructions were poor, and contradictory to everything i read about installing with win XP. My computer started to freeze at this point. I had to uninstall the Linksys software and use windows to find new hardware (as many forums suggest) & target the driver on the cd. This did not solve the problems. My computer would freeze up again. It would sometimes unfreeze if i pulled the adapter out. With both of these routes, the adapter never worked at finding ANY network within range (there are a few). Next i downloaded the latest software from linksysbycisco.com, version 1.0. Finally, the adapter could find the networks, altho the signal was very weak (no better than wireless b adapter). I thought all was ok until my computer froze several more times. I've since read a TON of reviews (see the linksys website above and query this adapter and 'freeze') with people having the same problems & no solutions. I don't know if Linksys will warranty it.. if not, i'm out $30 and will tell everyone i know NOT TO BUY Linksys! I would love to know why this has been so problematic. Was this review helpful?

i wasn't sure if this product work fine with my router because the one i have is not with speed-booster. however it works great so far. there is no difference in speed though.
the set up wasn't easy as it's said. it took me quite a while to connect and finish. when i was setting up, it messed up the network i already had but it's fixed.
overall, it works as it should so I'm glad i got this product. no more cable!! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 works fine Friday, August 01, 2008 A Customer from NJ
The card works fine with my Linksys wireless G router. Installed on Windows XP SP2 centrino laptop (3 years old). The software conflicts with my existing Intel wireless B card (built in) and software but it still works. The linksys software is not as good as the intel but hey, it's a three year old laptop! All I need is to be able to stream video from my local lan. Now I can watch my avi files without drops. Recommended. Price was great. Was this review helpful?

The card is fast and works very well. The networking software did not want to connect correctly and would not hold WEP key. I have a linksys router. I used the windows interface instead and it worked very well. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Excellent Item Saturday, February 10, 2007 Will from Brooklyn, NY
To all the techies, computer savy people and everyone out there,
If you think that buying a wirelss card with speedbooster as opposed to a regular makes little difference then you better think twice!
If you live in an apartment building or a busy area where there is much interference such as cordless phones, mobile phones, multiple people using wireless internet, then this wireless with speedbooster is the way to go.
When I was using my laptop's built-in internal wireless card with my wireless travel adapter, I was dealing with constant poor signals or none at all. Now that I have the wireless card with speedbooster, my signal never gets lower then 55%.
TIP - If you plan to use a home cordless telephone at the same place you use your wireless internet, I recommend a 5.8ghz or higher range to prevent inteference.
Good luck and enjoy! Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Solid Performance Friday, September 29, 2006 A Customer from Fresno, Calif
Installation was a breeze. Just plug it in and a few clicks later the card was setup. The card is being used with a new Linksys WRT54GS and, after a month of use, the performance has been very reliable.
I have used this in every room in a 2-story house, as well as our backyard deck that is 60-65 feet from the router, and I have not had a single drop so far. Good to excellent signal strength from every location. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 It's not cheap but it's like being on a wired netw Tuesday, February 14, 2006 asoave3527 from CT
I know nothing about wireless connections but at the insistence of my college student who has wireless access on campus, I attempted to set up a wireless network in my home. I can't believe how easy it was! Getting the router up and running took some time. However, once that was done, all I needed to do was install the software from the CD, plug in the card, and hook into the home network. The wireless G with Speedboost card can be used with a regular wireless G router. The router I have will also accomodate wireless B, the card my college student has. One system for everyone's computers, that's easier and cheaper for me. And, the signal is so good that even if it's less than 100%, you get a great connection without having to worry about getting booted off. Once the home network is set up, you can share music, video and data folders across computers, even back up everyone's data on a shared hard drive. The wireless network has made sharing information a lot easier. Was this review helpful?

Now that I've got it going, it's great - very fast (with the corresponding "speedbooster" router/access point). Just be careful to install the software BEFORE you install the card. Otherwise, it will make the wireless connection fine, but not be able to connect to the internet. Once I got past that, everything was easy and it works great. Was this review helpful?

The connection utility software that comes with this card does not run on Windows ME. After several hours of frustration trying to get my notebook to connect to my wireless LAN, I called Linksys Support and they were able to determine that it's a KNOWN problem with their software running on Windows ME. The solution was to download third party wi-fi connection software from the internet and use this instead of the Linksys software that came with card. This is just unacceptable.
