5 of 5 Excellent External Drive Sunday, February 17, 2008
A Customer from Chicago, IL

This is the third 250MB LaCie drive we've purchased. 2 are on new iMacs and this one on a older Mac G3. Excellent hard drive. Everything is included (no additional cables to buy). Easy to install and each worked perfectly right out of the box. Absolutely no issues. We use SuperDuper backup software on the iMacs which automatically (user sets backup schedule) copies a pristine mirror reboot copy of the entire iMac hard drive to the LaCies. Best backup software available anywhere. We're very satisfied with the LaCie hard drives and recommend their purchase.

4 of 5 Silverkeeper not that great Tuesday, January 15, 2008
Drew from Albany, NY
The drive works and it has been robust so far. I do wish that the software (Silverkeeper) was a little easier to use. I find that I have to manually select files that I want to upload to the hard drive. I wish it were easier to format for regular downloads. Because its somewhat cumbersome to work with I don't save files to it as often as I though I would -- which kind of defeats the purpose of having an external hard drive.

1 of 5 My Lacie 250 Gb broke second day Wednesday, January 09, 2008
A Customer from Groves, Texas
The lacie I ordered shut down the second day of use, I stored all of my data music, pictures, movies etc. on it and wiped my computer. I went back the next day to transfer the media back and Windows informed me the hard drive malfunctioned and no longer recognized it. Lost all my Programs and Music. Sorry piece of machinery, DONT BUY!

5 of 5 So far no problems Thursday, April 26, 2007
Mac User from Pittsburgh, PA
connected it to my iMac, reformatted to use the Mac file system. Everything went smooth - no problems so far. The only problem comes from the iMac itself, since the USB2 support from MacOS is pretty bad the drives is slower that it should be ... but this is the fault of MacOS, not from the drive. Next time I get a firewire drive for the Mac - even the technical spec for firwire400 are slower than USB2, the USB2 behaves slower than firewire on an iMac (this is not true for windows)

3 of 5 Bad Case Redesign Friday, March 16, 2007
A Customer from Idaho, USA
This is my 4th LaCie Porsche HD. The older 3 have slide On/Off switches on the back. The new one has a 'soft power' Push On/Push Off button. Since these drives DO NOT spin down in Windows XP I have them all connected to a separate switched power strip to conserve energy, heat & drive longevity. When the new drive loses power it shuts Off but does not power back On when power is reapplied. Not a very thoughtful redesign.

5 of 5 So far so good Thursday, March 15, 2007
Matt from Brooklyn, NY
It plugged and played like it said it would. I installed the software for the one-click backup. It says it will delete the old file and make a new one every time. I like that feature so I will continue to use it.

5 of 5 Reliable and elegant design Tuesday, January 02, 2007
Daniel from Chicago, IL
I've owned this drive for 10 months and I have not had any problems with it at all. I've left it on for weeks at a time, I've dropped it onto a carpet from 2 feet, I've moved 20gb of data of and onto the drive and each time it has always performed remarkably well. The only complaints I can think of is that the small rubber piping that it stands on can peel off relatively easily, but other than that, it's worth it.

5 of 5 Two thumbs up! Tuesday, November 28, 2006
Dan Hollenberg from Hagerstown, IN
I researched and bought a LaCie 250gb external hard drive which gives me more memory than is on my Dell for only a few dollars more than the older 160gb. I also bought a LaCie USB 2.0 PCI card especially for the hard drive as I had used up the few ports on my computer. The combination has been great. The LaCie installation was quick and easy. Back-ups are quick. I used to back up my QuickenBooks on a 250mb Zip disk which took about five to seven seconds. Now it takes about one second. I back up my professional data files much more quickly, too. Reviews I read on the LaCie often mention the drive case getting hot. Mine gets warm but not hot. It sits on top of my Dell tower.

1 of 5 hit or miss Tuesday, November 14, 2006
A Customer from mn
between myself and a friend, we purchased 4 of these hds. 2 of them are fried after 1 year - had to be re-formatted & lost all data on them. I dont know why, maybe from overheating. I will never purchase a lacie product again, although they did have decent customer service & replaced 1 of our hds.

1 of 5 DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! 80% FAILURE RATE. Monday, November 13, 2006
mshima from 90650
I already reviewed this drive before. I reported that 2 out 3 drives had failed. Well, the third drive also failed; fortunately, I managed to get the drive to mount one last time and I got my data off. I returned the drive to LaCie and they sent me a new one. When I tried to use the drive, it was dead on arrival! I tried all the standard tricks (different computers, cables, power adapters, disk utilities) plus everything LaCie told me to do and nothing worked. Unfortunately for me, I had waited several months before I tried to use the drive. And now, the original drive is out of warranty, so LaCie will not replace the dead drive they shipped to me. So that makes 4 dead drives (all mechanical failures with complete loss of data) and one working drive (which itself is a replacement). That makes an 80% failure rate. Unless your data is disposable, do not buy one of these drives.

5 of 5 A Must Have Thursday, October 05, 2006
Pete from Noth Plainfield, New Jersey
The buying experience including shipping was wonderful. Even though a CD (with a manual and backup software) is included the product is ready to use. It is easy to move around. I have had hooked up to my laptop and I carry it to work with my laptop. When at home I share the drive and copy files over my home network. So it does not matter which computer I am using; I can store my important files in one common location in addition to the computer where I create the work. Sometimes I also have it hooked to my desktop by sharing I am able to access it from any other computer at home. I rarely have to use diskettes or even flash drives. It saves me alot of time and resources. And there's lot's of space still left!!! Get one!

4 of 5 Good one as compare to others in this range !! Wednesday, October 04, 2006
sur from CHICO, CA
I find the design to be very elegant and impressive for the looks. The biggest advantage of this drive is the weight which is much less any than other hard drive in this range and with this capacity. Also buy.com service is very good and the product was delivered on time. I got this product in a weekly deal with no-rebate and I have very happy with its performance.

5 of 5 All around great drive for a good pice Sunday, August 27, 2006
A Customer from Dallas, TX
I have two of these drives to backup data and then copy to the other as a dup backup. One user mentioned his drives getting hot. I have not had this problem with mine. Both drives are on 24x7 with no issues. The drive is stylish and has a low profile unlike some of the other backup drives. I have the USB verion of the drive and installation is practically nothing. Hook up and you are ready to go.

5 of 5 LaCie and Porsche - Complete satisfaction Wednesday, July 05, 2006
DouginAz from Mesa, Az
This unit is the epitomy of Plug & Play. It couldn't be simpler, nor more effective to install and get running. I've loaded more than 300 CDs in full, lossless format (FLAC) and still have more than half unused. It looks good, runs quietly, and is exactly as advertised.

5 of 5 good for price & stylish Tuesday, June 27, 2006
A Customer from cambridge, ma
This 250GB HD is not only stylish but a great value for the price. Based on the picture they show, the unit looks much bigger. It was a nice surprise to see how small it actually was when I received the unit. The only negative would be that this thing gets really hot really fast so I don't think it would be good to have this harddrive on all the time.

5 of 5 Great (& sturdy) Monday, June 26, 2006
Amanda from Illinois
I bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas, it was on sale the week before for $120. It was an excellent gift, easy to set up, and its plug & play (so we can transfer from his computer to mine very easily!) I was worried once when it fell off the top of a bunk bed and the case popped off a little, but it popped right back on and still works great! It was a great buy! Would definitely recommend!

4 of 5 First one DOA Tuesday, June 20, 2006
Bill from Charlotte, NC
I received my first LaCie drive several months ago and it was dead on arrival. As soon as I turned it on it sounded like it was grinding gravel! I returned it to Buy.com (a very painless process, BTW) for a refund. I wasn't planning on getting another of these drives but after a few months I tried another one. This one worked so well I ordered another about a month later. Both of the drives are working great. They are small, quiet and they have on/off switches on the back. (I've got a 160 GB WD external drive that you have to turn on and off by pulling out the pwer cord. What the heck kind of design is that?) So, I'm pretty happy with my two LaCie 250 GB external drives.

5 of 5 Great Price for a Great Drive Thursday, June 15, 2006
Tom Mills from Irvine, CA
Most external disk drives are big and clunky, perhaps because they have a power supply built into them and just require a power cord. The LaCie/Porsche units have a power brick, which makes this great for backup because you take home just the drive and not the brick. The device feels very sturdy and well made, and it is a very good size considering it has a full size 3.5" drive inside - it's the smallest external drive I've ever seen. And $130 for 250GB is a good price, too - you feel like you are getting a nicely designed drive for a bargain price. I have sold three pairs of these to customers and am totally satisfied.

5 of 5 Very Happy with Mine! Tuesday, June 13, 2006
Bret from Cincinnati, OH
Purchased one of these to use at work to backup and store files. I downloaded "Second Copy" software to replicate "My Documents" from the laptop C: drive to this external USB drive. It works great and I have my critical documents in two places. With very limited space on the server I have no problem 'finding space' on this drive. I highly recommend, especially for the price & free shipping.

5 of 5 Great drive! Tuesday, June 06, 2006
Gary from Los Angeles, CA
I was hesitant to write a review right after receiving and installing the drive, but I've had it for 6 months now. Installation was easy - I just plugged it in. I did not format it so I would have the freedom to use it on both Macs and PCs. It's a great drive. Fast (for USB 2.0). Runs quietly and does not get too hot, but the case - as should be expected - gets a little warm after I leave it on for too long. I don't know if it's because of the drive itself or because of Mac OS X, but the drive goes to sleep after a little bit of inactivity, which is great. Oh, and it looks really nice as well. If I ever need to buy another external drive, it will most likely be another one of these.

1 of 5 Drive Croaked Dead After Two Months Monday, June 05, 2006
J.O. from Arizona
Great price. Acceptable design ("Design by F.A. Porsche"? -- it's a stinkin' silver box!). Croaked Dead. But wait, it's still in warranty -- do I send in all my financial data to Lacie for an exchange? Perhaps I just got a bad one. Perhaps I will never buy a cut-rate drive again. At least they could have put a fan on the thing. It gets VERY hot. On their web site they recommend stacking no more than four high. Ha! It would double as a space heater! I wish someone put in a review like this before I bought mine.

1 of 5 Horrible Product! - Do not buy Sunday, June 04, 2006
A Customer from Elizabethtown, PA
As soon as this drive came from Buy.com it worked sporadically. I tried returning it but I threw away my packing slip so I needed to send it to LaCie for repair. They rebuilt it (or sent me a refurbished drive) and it worked fine for months. Now both my computers only recognize it as "Local Disk" and I cannot access anything on it. This defeats the purpose of having a backup device, doesn't it? So now I'm trying to get it sent back to LaCie for another repair. I may wind up buying a different brand and just scraping this one all together. While other customers seem to have had luck with the product, be careful! As soon as I got comfortable with it, the drive would just stop working!

3 of 5 Manufacturing Problem? Friday, June 02, 2006
Jason from Charlotte, NC
This drive came today...I was no doubt excited. I plugged everything in and nothing happened. There was power to it, but it wouldnt power on, there were no sounds from it. I tried everything I knew to get it working and nothing worked. I hate returning things, so I decided to take it apart. It took almost an hour to get the bottom off. After it was finally off I looked at the jumper setting and...it was set to cable select!!! I had read that it should be on master, so I switched it. I pluged it back in and it started up just fine. Windows detected it and and I started storing my files. For anyone who wants to check this seting here is how the bottom is attached:
(front)
------------
|.............|
||..........||
|.............|
||..........||
|.............|
||..........||
|.............|
||..........||
|.............|
------------
(back)
Where there are two | (i.e. ||) is a little tab holding it on. You have to push the plastic covering back enough to release them (This is rather hard to do). I used small paperclips to hold the casing back. Once inside the rest is self explainitory. Try and see if it works with the case off (mine does). For those of you that have problems with this drive not working when you get it, this may be the problem. Good luck!

5 of 5 Awsome External Drive, but a Bit Fragile Tuesday, May 23, 2006
Little Android Man from not important
I had this drive for 4 months and loved it. It was very quick, not very loud, had a very handy on/off switch, and is probably one of the best looking, cleanest external drives out there. I used it to keep backups and images of my PCs.
Just be very careful with it. I accidentally dropped it from about 2.5' onto carpet and it died instantly (The drive was powered on. If it was off and the head was parked it may have survived the drop just fine). It doesn't even spin up now. 100% loss of data. And ironically this drop was caused by the very short USB cable it came with which I laughed at everyone for complaining about in the reviews. This short cable was plugged into my laptop, and when I moved my laptop it yanked the drive off the top of the PC it was sitting on.

5 of 5 Amazing Monday, May 22, 2006
Valentin from New York
I have already 2 of these and I'm thinking to get a third one. I have no idea what these people are writing here ??!! Unless they're trying to boost up the other competition. I have literally put them in a backpack without any precaution as if they were cd cases travelled with them(one of them has been even hit hard and its kind of cosmetically distorted) and they still work. I play games directly from there and I mount the image from there although they're USB 2 not firewire, I play divx movies directly from there even on a USB 1 port and there is absolutely no lag. Once again some reviews here do not make sense. I'm on my way to the third one ... hopefully the price will drop a little bit more to 110 just like I bought the previous 2.

5 of 5 Don't sweat the 18 gig shortage Friday, May 05, 2006
A Customer from Huntington, NY
I have several external hard drives. The great thing about this one is that it has an "on/off" switch. If you don't use it frequently, (which most people don't) it's nice that you don't have to unplug the USB cable in order for it to not run unnecessarily. (P.S. anybody who thinks that a hard drive is "fragile" if it fails when it is subjected to any quick movement when it's running, is naive!)

5 of 5 about that 232 gb Tuesday, May 02, 2006
A Customer from Indianapolis, IN
For all of you that think you got scamed out of your 18gb (232 vs. 250). Why dont you look at all your other hard drives and do the math. here is the math 8 bit = 1 byte 1 kb = 1024 byte 1 gb = 1024*1024*1024 or 250,000,000,000/(1024*1024*1024) = 232.83064365387 GB = 232 GB

5 of 5 Best storage money can buy Friday, March 24, 2006
CyberspaceDevelopers.com from Walled Lake, MI
I bought one of the Lacie 250gb USB 2.0 external hard drives a couple weeks ago. I am very happy with my purchase. It was an incredible deal and is truly plug and play. It shows around 233GB available when plugged into an XP machine. More than I will need for awhile :-) I can't believe how cheap storage has become. Copying files and making directories on the back up drive is a piece of cake. I like the short usb cable, I keep the unit on top of my computer towards the back and it works great. It also has an on and off switch which is nice. So far no complaints and would buy another one.

5 of 5 Simply wonderful Thursday, March 23, 2006

This Hard drive is great .. it plugs right in with zero installation. Copying speed is good. Size might seem a little big but it scores on performance. Drive is pretty silent as well.. The short usb chord makes it necessary to keep the drive close to the laptop ..but overall its a good piece of equipment. --Susmit.

4 of 5 Good drive, but not impresed by "Porsche" Thursday, March 23, 2006
A Customer from Fremont, CA
The drive is fine. It works, was easy to connect and was a decent price. I just was expecting more since they keep saying "Design by F.A. Porsche". It looked plain. Like a silver version of a old external white box I had years ago. It was even a bother that the power switch is too small, inconvient and not even labled. Except for the fact that this drive is smaller I would say the Fantom drive is better. I have that one also and I like the looks of it just fine but its heavy.
