Editor's Note

Screenwriter Shane Black of LETHAL WEAPON fame makes his directorial debut with this film noir gem. Robert Downey, Jr., stars as Harry Lockhart, a petty thief in New York City who quite literally stumbles into acting and soon finds himself in Los Angeles to test for a film role as a private detective. To help Harry prepare, his new agent arranges for him to shadow a gay private investigator, Perry van Shrike--also known as "Gay Perry" (Val Kilmer). But when Perry takes Harry along on a simple job for a mystery client, the two witness the disposal of a dead body, and the game suddenly becomes serious. Adding to the intrigue is Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan), a beautiful and smart-as-a-whip wannabe starlet with whom Harry is so smitten that he pretends to be a real detective. Soon Harry, Perry, and Harmony are tangled in a life-threatening web of dead bodies, deception, and treachery.

Downey is a delight, exhibiting perfect comic timing while infusing Harry with just enough heart to show that, despite appearances, he really is a good guy. Kilmer is the ideal buddy for Downey, playing the no-nonsense private investigator Perry with the right mixture of machismo and stereotypical Tinseltown superficiality. As Harry's dream girl, Harmony, Monaghan embodies the good girl whose dreams are looking more and more unobtainable--and who has clearly been around the block a few times. Top-notch performances combined with Black's wickedly amusing banter and a plot laden with twists and turns make this action-thriller a treat.

Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly
"Deliriously enjoyable....The duo make a whole greater than the sum of their parts, a couple of highly flammable actors as famous for their volatile offscreen reputations as for their redoubtable acting chops." -- Grade: A- 10/28/2005 p.50-61

Sight and Sound
"[I]t's the laugh-a-minute repartee of this odd couple that drives the movie....Kilmer revels in showing off his long-dormant talent for suave comedy..." 12/01/2005 p.60

Uncut
Ranked #19 in Uncut's Best Films Of 2005 -- "Pure post-PULP FICTION perfection." 01/01/2006 p.82-83

"All action, gags and pathos, and every bit as good as the classic noirs." 06/15/2006 p.102

Widescreen Review
"[C]omplicated and humorous..." 07/01/2006 p.70

Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is made for a fairly specific audience; it helps if you are familiar with the private eye genre in general and the works of Raymond Chandler in particular (the movie has five chapter headings, all taken from Chandler's titles)...The movie might reward deep textual study; consider that in the chapter named after Chandler's "The Lady in the Lake", a gun is thrown into the lake, giving us the girl and the gun formula in a form so subtle that right now you are wondering why I don't simply cave in and tell you if the movie is any good or not. - Roger Ebert

Variety.com 8 of 10
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is a stylish, smarty-pants mystery thriller from the way-glib pen of Shane Black. In his directorial debut, Black has made a film at the adrenaline level of the manic cop character he wrote for Mel Gibson in "Lethal Weapon," and the Hollywood setting provides an excuse for a wise-ass insider tone. Perhaps too clever for its own good and so confusingly dense one is tempted to stop trying to follow the plot and just go along for the ride, Warner Bros. release looks poised for a modest theatrical life, with likely prolonged cult status among hardcore fans in home formats. - Todd McCarthy
