With the phenomenal growth of data and a better awareness of the need to back it up, there is always a market for a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device.  Last I really knew of Iomega was back in the ZIP drive days where they ruled the home storage world.  But with EMC bringing their enterprise level experience to the SOHO arena, can it revive this company's fortunes with the Iomega StorCenter ix2 NAS?  Thanks to the good people at Iomega, DigitalReviews gets up close and personal with a 2 Tb edition of the ix2....read the full review

5 of 5 Works great for me Tuesday, October 27, 2009
A Customer from Bel Air, MD

Yes, the reviews about the included backup program are true; it's not the best. I used good ol' NTBackup to backup to disk (the Y: drive). As for speed, I'm running it 100MB at the moment along with all the machines accessing it. I suspect once Santa brings me my 1GB switch, things will pick up a great deal. I can't speak to permissions, as I don't use them, nor do I currently have a need for them. Some have said it's noisy. I wouldn't call it "loud," but it's not silent. I have it my network closet at home, so it's out of earshot. One thing I can say is it is plenty durable! It was dropped while running from a 4' shelf. It landed on a box, on its bottom, then slid off and landed on its corner on the floor. It powered back up and is still running just fine.

1 of 5 date-based file comparisons don't work Thursday, June 11, 2009
shaun from madison, wi
I set this up as a NAS on a small office LAN. You cannot set permissions on the backup share if you want to use the backup program it comes with. So I setup some scripts with xcopy /d commands to do date-based comparisons & only copy over files that are newer. It always copies over everything though. cwrsync does work, but it's very very slow. When used as a NAS, I think this device has some problems with reading file attributes (time/date stamp & size), or something. I am running the latest firmware version. Will try running it as an external USB drive to see if it performs better.

1 of 5 Avoid this - too slow, too flaky Saturday, May 30, 2009
Sandeep Garg from Naperville, IL
I own a network of 8 computers at home: Mac, PCs & Linux, all running on a Gigabit LAN. I wanted to retire an old file server PC and this looked like the perfect solution: embedded Linux in a compact package, with a nice Web GUI. Turns out the performance is slower than my old file server which had a 100BaseT LAN card and a couple of USB disks. Makes no sense whatsoever. Also, the software, while easy to use, is just flaky... it won't start up, for example, or just not show changes. I tried both a Mac and a Windows machine. I actually set up FreeNAS on my file server (replaced Linux) and now am getting great performance and stable running, for $0 additional. This one goes right back!

5 of 5 A good backup solution Sunday, May 03, 2009
Kevin from Park Ridge, NJ
Installs easily and works well. I just connect it to the network hub in a closet and out of sight and sound. Scheduling software is good enough, not great. Not enough backup options but will works for most homes. The speed seems slow especially if you're backing large amounts of data. Scheduling it off hours is a good workaround. Overall works as expected and setup is relatively easy.

4 of 5 Good overall solution Monday, April 27, 2009
A Customer from Dallas, TX
Pros: Easy overall setup. Small not too noisy. Basic server funcitons easy to use and no problem setting up backup program provided or using a different one. Good upload and download speeds Cons: Appears to not setup rad functionality initally. Confusing to setup rad functionality. Using media function a bit confusing. Slow to move or copy a file from one folder to another on the server. Overall: Not a bad deal for an average household user.

Good backup device, but the software come with it is bad, you have to install it on every PC to run the backup.

5 of 5 Good Product Saturday, April 18, 2009
A Customer from Parker, CO
Product seems to be very good. Amazed that so much can be in such a small package. The software is not very well documented though.
