In April 1992, a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhikes to Alaska and walks alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. Four months later, his decomposed body is found by a moose hunter. How Chris McCandless came to die is the unforgettable story of "Into the Wild."

Annotation:
INTO THE WILD developed out of an article Jon Krakauer wrote for Outside magazine. Emory University honors graduate Christopher Johnson McCandless--"Alexander Supertramp"--took off after college in rebellion against authority and his privileged upbringing. Krakauer reveals the details leading up to the boy's death in the Alaskan wilderness, where he was found by hunters in September of 1992, at the age of 24. The author shares personal reflections about his own risk-taking adventures, as well as impressions of those who knew Christopher. In 2007, the book was made into a film directed by Sean Penn.

Praise
"Because the story involves overbearing pride, a reversal of fortune and a final moment of recognition, it has elements of classic tragedy. By the end, Mr. Krakauer has taken the tale of a kook who went into the woods, and made of it a heart-rending drama of human yearning." 01/04/1996

"'Into the Wild' is an investigation into [the] need to forsake a life of wealth and privilege in order to wander amongst the destitute....It is a fascinating story expertly researched, with Krakauer puzzling out just how McCandless came to his end. In so doing, it becomes the truth behind so many wilderness fantasies." 03/1998

"A wonderful page-turner written with humility, immediacy, and great style. Nothing came cheap and easy to McCandless, nor will it to readers of Krakauer's narrative." 10/15/1995

Author Bio
Jon Krakauer
Bestselling non-fiction author Jon Krakauer is known for his ability to combine harrowing true stories with history and philosophy. He began his professional career as an adventure and mountaineering writer, with his work appearing in National Geographic and Outside magazine, and collected in EIGER DREAMS (1990). His next book, INTO THE WILD (1996), told the story of Christopher McCandless, a young man who died while wintering in the Alaska wilderness. The book became a massive bestseller, as did his third book, INTO THIN AIR, a harrowing account of his participation in the fatal "1996 Mount Everest Disaster." With UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN (2003), a critical account of the fundamentalist elements of the Mormon religion, Krakauer proved the breadth of his interests and talents. In 2007 INTO THE WILD was made into a major motion picture, directed by Sean Penn.

THE ALASKA INTERIOR

April 27th, 1992

Greetings from Fairbanks! This is the last you shall hear from me, Wayne. Arrived here 2 days ago. It was very difficult to catch rides in the Yukon Territory. But I finally got here.

Please return all mail I receive to the sender. It might be a very long time before I return South. If this adventure proves fatal and you don't ever hear from me again I want you to know you're a great man. I now walk into the wild. --Alex.

(Postcard received by Wayne Westerberg in Carthage, South Dakota.)

Jim Gallien had driven four miles out of Fairbanks when he spotted the hitchhiker standing in the snow beside the road, thumb raised high, shivering in the gray Alaska dawn. He didn't appear to be very old: eighteen, maybe nineteen at most. A rifle protruded from the young man's backpack, but he looked friendly enough; a hitchhiker with a Remington semiautomatic isn't the sort of thing that gives motorists

5 of 5 Incredible story Tuesday, May 06, 2008
A Reader from Irvine, California

After seeing the movie, I knew I had to read the book. I have read other books by Jon Krakauer, a very brilliant writer, and he did not let me down with this one. I savored it. I needed to know more and I got more. I just finished it getting up at midnight to read the last couple of chapters. Thank you Jon; thank you Penn.
