| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Green Day: Billie Joe (vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica); Mike Dirt (vocals, Farfisa organ, bass); Tre Cool (accordion, drums, percussion). | | Producers: Green Day, Jerry Finn, Rob Cavallo. | | Filling in grunge's fading pop appeal, Green Day and peers Offspring and Rancid kicked off a neo-punk revolution in the mid-90s still reverberating seven years later with bands like Blink-182 and Fenix TX. INTERNATIONAL SUPERHITS is a compact overview of the band's career-making major label run starting with 1994's DOOKIE right up to new songs like the rambunctious "Maria" and choppy charm of "Poprocks And Coke" recorded specifically for this compilation. | | D.I.Y. to the core, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirt and Tre Cool clung to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) best exemplified by the straightforward punk of "Jaded". Basic ingredients include punchy guitar chords, undeniable hooks and tight harmonies that can be heard in their breakthrough rant against ennui ("Longview") and equally strident latter-day anthem for the underdog ("Minority"). Armstrong's constantly improving songwriting found him spitting out gems like the infectious "When I Come Around," inadvertent prom theme "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" and brilliant heavy mass "Brain Stew". Although Green Day missed the original wave of late '70s punks like The Clash and The Jam, INTERNATIONAL SUPERHITS! proves this San Francisco pop-punk trio wouldn't have had much trouble fitting in alongside these legendary names. |
| | Artist Overview | | Coming out of the grass-roots Gilman St. punk scene of the early-1990s Bay Area, Green Day exploded into the mainstream with their third album, 1994's DOOKIE. The trio's punk energy and pop hooks, influenced by first-generation punks like the Buzzcocks, in turn inspired a huge legion of punk-pop followers. Their energy level flagged a bit following the smash success of DOOKIE, but the band's enormously successful 2004 Grammy-winning political concept album, AMERICAN IDIOT, proved they were mature artists and far from a one-trick pony. |

5 of 5 A Great Album From One Of The Greatest Bands! Sunday, April 15, 2007 A Listener from Kingston, Ontario
I am a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE Green Day fan. I have been like that for a few years now. In this review I will rate the songs on this album from 1 - 10, 1 being really bad, and 10 being a masterpiece. Here we go:
1.Maria 6/10
A very cool and catchy song but gets annoying after a while. Nice guitar in it though.
2.Poprocks And Coke 9/10
I love this song, it has a great rythm and the lyrics are awesome. The bass and guitar are great in this one.
3.Longview 9.5/10
A classic! With lyrics about smoking dope, boredom, and masturbation who wouldn't love this song? An awsome bass riff that you can't get out of your head with a really cool drum roll at the start.
4.Welcome To Paradise 8.5/10
This one is really special, because of Billie and Mike singing about their home away from home back when they were teens with the punk community. One of my favorite chorus and a really cool bass interlude.
5.Basketcase 10/10
Simply an amazing song. Billie singing about his panic disorder, the lyrics are extremely clever, awsome guitar, bass, and drum performence. This is one of my top favorites.
6.When I Come Around 10/10
Another one of my favorites, you will fall in love with song when you hear it. This song is one of my favorite guitar riffs of all time, with a catchy chorus and solo, this song is really special.
7.She 8.5/10
This song must have the catchiest chorus of all time:
"Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?"
I love the bass and vocals in this song.
8.JAR(Jason Andrew Relva) 7/10
This song I'm sorry to say is about the death of a friend of Mike's. Really great guitar and bass in this song.
9.Geek Stink Breath 8.5/10
This song is another of my favorites, with it's extremely catchy guitar riff.
10.Brain Stew 9.5/10
Another Green Day classic! Along with it's partner Jaded, this song was a radio favorite. This song is so catchy with it's guitar and drum rythm, along with some of Billie's best songwriting.
11.Jaded 7/10
Brain Stew's partner, I love the vocals in this song, once the words get in your head they don't get out.
12.Walking Contradiction 7.5/10
I have mixed feelings about this one. This song is a bit of a mix of Geek Stink Breath and Jaded. This song has clever lyrics and a catchy guitar riff.
13.Stuck With Me 8/10
This is another of my favorites. Amazing bass and guitar.
14.Hitchin' A Ride 9/10
Unbelievebly catchy. This one is always great to listen to, with that "Stray Cat Strut" vibe to it.
15.Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) 10/10
This is one of the bravest things Green Day have ever done in their musical career. They didn't care about the Punk Critics who would try to shoot them done for this song. A lot of people say this song isn't punk, but punk is about being true to yourself not caring what others think.
16.Redundant 7/10
Nice slow song with a great solo and a catchy chorus. Great songwriting by Billie.
17.Nice Guys Finish Last 8/10
This one's pretty cool. I love the drum playing in this one along with the bass.
18.Minority 9.5/10
This is another one of my favorites, great playing on all parts. I wish it was only a bit longer.
19.Warning 8/10
Another great drum and bass song, nice easy rythm.
20.Waiting 6.5/10
I'm not really fond of this song. It has really nice guitar and vocals in it, plus great lyrics, but I still don't like it that much.
21.Macy's Day Parade 7/10
I like this song, It's got nice lyrics, drums, bass, and guitar.
CONCLUSION:
Best Song On Album: Basketcase
Worst Song On Album: Maria
Overall this is a great album, my favorite next to Dookie.
