2 of 5 Device is great / OEM software poor Tuesday, August 07, 2007 A Customer from Baton Rouge
The gps is capable and accurate but the included software is outdated. The software is not compatible with Windows Mobile Ver 5 on my Treo 700wx and causes the system to run slow or freeze. I have emailed IO Gear without response and upgraded software would be an additional expense. I found the software developer and have emailed them, also without response. The only way thus far to get the gps to work as advertised is to purchase the new version of the software from the developer for the additional fee (not upgrade price). The GPS will work with Google Maps and MS Live Search but with limitations. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 Difficult to get working Friday, July 13, 2007 Chris from Kinderhook, NY
I bought this device after reading reviews at several places, so I can't say that I didn't know what I was getting into. Reviews are all over the board -- Google the model number and you'll find one guy who claims that this device doesn't work with Windows Mobile 5.0 and "IOGear knows it." Other people report that this is a great product.
My experience, like the truth I guess, is somewhere in the middle. The unit is well made and the software works well enough. However, it IS difficult to configure with Windows Mobile 5.0 (yes, it DOES work). In my opinion you should consider a standalone GPS if:
- You have never set up a Bluetooth device with your PDA or PC before; the documentation looks helpful but you will need to know *exactly* how your PDA works with Bluetooth peripherals. My PDA needs to rediscover the GPS unit every time I want to use it, so I'm now an expert.
- You want to use your Windows smartphone as a phone while driving. The GPS software is good, but it is all my UTStarcomm 6700 can run and it slows to a crawl. An incoming call hung my PDA for about 10 minutes and I was not able to answer the call. I could have reset the phone, but then I would have had to rediscover the GPS and plan the route all over again while driving.
- You want a lot of control over your route. Using the PDA software is challenging (even though it really does work!). It's best to plan a route and stick to it. This device is fine for going from an airport to a hotel but if you want to make a lot of side trips or take a shortcut, you'll quickly find it frustrating if you veer too far away from an interstate highway.
- You only want driving directions. The appeal of this device to me was that it works with both my PC and phone so I can use it for lots of other purposes. However, a single purpose GPS would be better at its single purpose.
- You don't have a car charger and a nice big memory card for your PDA. I have no reason to doubt IOGear's claim of a 25 hour battery life per charge, but I can't say the same for my phone. The maps are very detailed and take up a lot of space.
In short, this device is great for a technical person who has multiple uses for a GPS besides driving. The fact that it can work with other GPS aware software was why I bought it. I imagine that stand-alone GPS units are much more limited but the great flexibility of this device makes it less easy to use. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 Doesn't seem tested with SmartPhones Thursday, June 21, 2007 Tony from Brick NJ
I have a Palm Treo 700W running Microsoft Windows Mobile 5
Although I can get it to work, if anything unexpected happens, like receiving a phone call while you're using it, you basically end up having to reboot the Treo to get things working again. Many other similar bugs like that, when you try to leave the route software to use any other application of the PDA, almost impossible to return to the route sw.
I've contaced customer support a few times, but they seem oblivious to all the problems I mentioned. But I don't see how anyone could have tested with my combination and not see the problems. Was this review helpful?

Originally I want to have this GPS working with my notebook. After two RMAs and long hours w/ the support, I still could not get them to work with my two notebooks. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Good product Friday, December 22, 2006 A Customer from san francisco, ca
I got this for use with my IPAQ 2495 and it works great! It took 3 tries, however, to get one where the CDs worked and the unit itself worked (hense the 3 as ease of use). The navigation s/w it comes with is OK, but my IPAQ seemed to have some memory issues with it. It works great with TomTom 5. The unit starts up quickly and locks onto satellites quickly, and overall I'm very pleased with it. The only caveat I have is that the CDs for the navigation system in the package seem to consistently not work and IOGear won't do anything about that in the first 30 days, so I had to keep returning the unit to Buy.com until I got one that worked. This product works great overall for me. It is a nice add-on to your pocket pc.
<BR>
<BR>
Pros:
<BR>
1. Come with the GPS navigation software. The software is an OEM of iGuidance, which is actually very good. It is very rare for a product at this price range to include the GPS navigation software. The software alone could cost a good $100.
<BR>
2. The 25 hour Li-Ion battery life is very nice. So I only need to charge it in the night.
<BR>
3. The vechicle charging adaptor can charge my Dell Axim X50v, which saves me money.
<BR>
<BR>
Cons:
<BR>
1. Need some time from it being turned on to the time you can establish a bluetooth connection. And bluetooth connection can break sometime. You jut need to learn to get used to it and recover from this situation.
<BR>
2. For those with a VGA screen, The voice guidance software executable get automatically deleted when you switch to real VGA mode, using things like SE_VGA. I think this is by design, not a bug, because it will install another executable in real VGA mode.
But it created panic situation for me and make me finally abandoned real VGA mode (too small for navigation anyway).
<BR>
3. Sometime locates you at a wrong road close-by. I think this is either a map problem or a software problem.
<BR>
<BR>
As a final word, 8 satallites are more than enough to find an accurate location. You only need 4. However, it would be better if this unit has the WAAS capatability.beete Was this review helpful?
