 Editor's Note
American director Chris Columbus (HOME ALONE) brings the magic of British author J.K. Rowling's beloved best-selling fantasy novel to life in HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE. Eleven-year-old orphan Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) finds his world turned upside down when he discovers that, like his deceased parents, he is a wizard and has been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. With fellow first-year students Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) by his side, Harry's adventures begin in the rambling castle that is Hogwarts. Vivid special effects make Hogwarts' magic a reality with paintings that come alive, staircases that move themselves, friendly ghosts, and fast-paced Quidditch (the school sport) matches in which students zoom around on their flying brooms. Mixed in with the miracles of Hogwarts are its dark hidden chambers and secrets, which Harry and his friends encounter as they embark on a quest to keep a treasured powerful object from falling into the wrong hands. Staying true to the book with this film adaptation, Columbus follows Rowling's story to the tiniest detail, making it a special treat for readers who were smitten with the novel. Radcliffe is especially engaging as Harry, infusing him with a believable sense of wonderment. The star-studded cast also includes Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, and Robbie Coltrane.

 | Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - DVD Review By: Norm Schrager - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 11/4/2008 10:31 PM | |
When you’re the chosen one, like the boy wizard Harry Potter, expectations surrounding your arrival can be quite high. The same can be said for the film adaptation about said boy wizard, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. And while the young wonder might not let his magic school chums down, the movie chronicling his early wizard years could use a little lift. Which isn’t to say that Sorcerer’s Stone, the first Harry Potter movie based on J.K. Rowling’s inexplicably successful book series, is a boring movie. In fact, Rowling’s exceptional world, involving young magic makers at a British wizardry prep school, transfers to the screen with a general creativity and charm in the hands of director Chris Columbus....read the full review |

I am a 50 year old Harry Potter fan. I devoured the books (all 4 in about a week and a half), and I thought the movie was very, very good. I pre-ordered the movie (DVD) from Buy.com in February and much to my utter amazement, the movie arrived in my mailbox---THE VERY DAY OF THE ACTUAL RELEASE!!!! I am still in shock that BUY.com got it to me that quickly...even though I took advantage of their "FREE SHIPPING" on the movie!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!WAY TO GO BUY.COM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Until the movie came out, I had no knowledge of the Harry Potter stories at all. After seeing the film, I was hooked. On a technical note, the film has a solid script, acting, fantastic production values, etc. It also does a tremendous service to the book, as it is true to the characters, plotting, and most importantly, the fantasy atmosphere and setting. Some extraneous details were left out, but the filmmakers made the right decisions. Most importantly, the film (and books) are very appealing to all ages. I'm in my mid-30's and I experienced the same thrill from this film that I felt when I saw Star Wars for the first time (my personal favorite). Highly recommended! Was this review helpful?

I picked up the first Harry Potter book in the spring of 2001 to see what the hub-bub was about and became hooked instantly. Afraid of how Hollywood treats books I was a bit reluctant to go to the theater to see the movie version and came away very satisfied. Nothing was really changed, just "merged". After all, you can only fit so much into a 2 hour movie (of which this goes over a bit), but overall I found it very satisfying. Casting was very good. Hermione wasn't quite as I imagined but her attitude fit the part. Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall along with the others are so perfect in their parts. This is definitely a "must have" movie. I can't wait for the others to come out. And so far, Buy.com has the best deal with free shipping so if there are any Harry Potter fans out there, now is the time to order to take advantage of the free shipping and a discounted price. If you think, even remotely, that you are still young at heart....you have to have this movie in your collection. Here is the pre-eminent PG (kids flick) for adults. It's one of those that will compel you to read the book! Bought the book for my teenage son...badgered him to read it...he did, in three days, and went on for all the others. Then I did, and finished 'em off in less than a month, craving more. Guarenteed to push all the right buttons! Was this review helpful?

My kids are 'uge Harry PotHeads, and will be screaming with delight that we got this on DVD. AND FREE SHIPPING! I don't have to go store-to-store to find this when it comes out! I liked this movie so much I read all four Harry Potter books in three weeks!
The kids are very convincing actors. The cinematography is great, especially the quidditch match. I think the troll made another appeared in Fellowship of the Ring, but it didn't spoil the movie one bit. ;)
The movie is very close to the book, with minor changes for continuity reasons.
This is about the best price you'll find anywhere. I'm sure Best Buy will have it if you want to wait and pay $23.95. Was this review helpful?
