A compelling argument can be made that Merle Haggard has been the most important country artist to emerge since the 1950s (Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings are his only true competition), and HAG: THE BEST OF MERLE HAGGARD supports that argument with 26 incontrovertible pieces of evidence. The only single-disc compilation to span the whole of Haggard's career (encompassing all of his many label changes), HAG contains the lion's share of the country legend's greatest hits, including "Branded Man," "Mama Tried," and "Okie from Muskogee," alongside duets with Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. Haggard's voice and picking come through like reliable old friends, but it is his spectacular songwriting that really shines. The 2006 reissue features beautifully remastered sound. |
Artist Overview
Along with Buck Owens and Wynn Stewart, Merle Haggard created the Bakersfield country sound of the '60s, emphasizing two-part harmonies, tasty guitar solos, catchy choruses and a no-frills approach to production. To this, the singer/songwriter/guitarist adds his own jazzy Western swing touches. His distinctly proletarian lyrics alternate between classic honky-tonk barroom laments and the celebration of the blue-collar working man. Like many country stars of the '60s and '70s, Haggard slipped off the mainstream radar in the '80s and '90s, but made a Johnny Cash-like "comeback" with the poignant, sparsely produced IF I COULD ONLY FLY in 2000.
