5 of 5 If you're going to purchase a Pocket PC Monday, July 31, 2006

Normally I don't endorse HP products as some of their products have less than stellar track records. But, I've evaluated at least 10 different PPC platforms and the 4700 is by far the best. It's fast, it's durable and the graphics are absolutely stunning, plus it has a slim profile; I mean you get a lot of bang for the buck. In comparison to other models of iPAQ's, yeah, it's expensive, but it's worth every single penny. The only thing that HP could do to improve on this device is to build a cell phone into it while keeping the performance and graphics. Until then, I'll be happy carrying around both a cell phone and my 4700.

The upside: First off, the screen is ASTOUNDING. The VGA resolution is a JOY to behold when viewing spreadsheets, browsing the web, reading email, etc. Having used an iPaq 5555 previously, this PDA was actually a (very) slight decrease in size even with the larger screen. The software bundle is wonderful and the handful of applications I've installed have all worked without issue. The downside: The touchpad is a questionable decision, in my opinion. The idea is to be able to switch into a cursor based navigation mode for when the screen is closed. So far, I've found this to be next to useless. When in button mode, it's certainly not as accurate as using the old directional pad/stick. <br><br> My only other (minor) issue thusfar is the memory. The unit only has 64MB of running memory. It makes up for this with more applications in ROM than ever before and a very large iPAQ File Store with about 85MB available. This is non-volatile memory (i.e. not lost due to battery outage) and may come in very handy. It remains unclear how well the OS will make use of this memory, however. <br><br> Overall, it's a great unit with a laundry list of incredible features but a couple of minor, questionable design issues.

As you probably figured, this is HP's (Compaq's too) best iPaq yet. It has so many features and also has a brand new feature--the touchpad, which is better in some ways and can be worse in others, like playing games. I highly recommend this ipaq!

I am very happy with this PDA. In my opinion, it is very slim and the perfect size. Some people will consider it too large, but I don't at all. It is just the size I want it to be. It is very fast and responsive, the wireless options work excellent, I can stream a 528KB video over WiFi and watch it perfectly -- and stream mp3's with no problem. Web surfing is also fast and easy. I highly recommend this and the price is very good!
