Yes, the drive works. I expected that. Being heavy isn't actually the nicest thing one could brag about, but I don't pick it up much. Nowhere near 20X !! <p></p> <b>THE FAN NEVER SHUTS OFF</b>. It ought to be quiet when not in use. This fan runs permanently when the drive is powered on -- Putting the machine in standby mode or even powered down, the fan keeps on running. I'm willing to endure noise when I'm using the drive, not when it's idle. The fan is loud enough to interfere with normal talking while I'm at the keyboard.

Ok, first off, this drive is built like a tank! It's sized like one (biggest dvd drive I've seen), so the vertical stand helps...it's sturdy like one...and it sounds like one! (the drive sometimes spins very noisely on CDs, not on movie DVDs, but that can be adjusted with software like Nero) Not sure what the problem is that the other reviewer has...I haven't burnt a coaster yet since I got it in October, have burnt mostly data DVDs and music CDs...16x is decent speed if you're burning DVD+-R...Nero shows me actual speed, it starts at 9x then progressively going up to 15-16x...I believe all drives do that. Now, I will agree with the other reviewer on the rebate, IF I don't get it! Have been waiting since October!

I'm connecting this using USB, and the max. speed is only 16x. Not sure if that's due to the USB connection. Burning at 16x has a 90% fail rate. I've made quite a few coasters with this writer. But the thing that really annoys me is the rebate company, myrebateonline.com. I turned in all the required materials 2 weeks after my purchase, which was within the rebate period. Another rebate for another item purchased at the same time was sent at the same time and processed within 1 month. Myrebateonline did NOT process my rebate until two months later and listed it as "submitted after rebate period", which is total BULL! Complaints are ignored. Buyers BEWARE!

This Gear Head external drive is very fast and easy to hook up. It's a bit loud, though - but everything else is satisfactory so far. I gave it a "3" for value only because it's annoying that Buy.com lowers the price of items so soon after selling the exact thing for a higher cost. I paid more for this, and it was only a few weeks ago. At the current price of $89.99, this is a great deal.
