Although the band's name may suggest a sudden vanishing, the music of Evanescence is poised for longevity. Fallen, the Wind-up Records debut of this talented quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas, is an emotional, ethereal work of undeniable potency guided by the heavenly vocals of Amy Lee. "We're definitely a rock band," says the 20-year-old Lee. "But the twist is that the band's music is epic, dramatic, dark rock." Fallen was tracked in Los Angeles with producer Dave Fortman (Boysetsfire, Superjoint Ritual). The album successfully finds that intangible balance between lush beauty and primal heaviness. Typical of the record is the first single, "Bring Me To Life," a piano ballad-turned-riff-driven barnburner. Highlighted by a guest vocal from Paul McCoy of 12 Stones, the song is featured prominently in the Daredevil film and soundtrack.

Fallen is the major-label debut of Evanescence, a Little Rock, AR-based quartet led by the soaring vocals of 20-year-old Amy Lee. Emboldened by the inclusion of its single "Bring Me to Life" on the soundtrack to the hit film Daredevil, Fallen debuted at an impressive number seven on Billboard's Top 40. But "Bring Me to Life" is a bit misleading. A flawless slice of Linkin Park-style anguish pop, it's actually a duet between Lee and 12 Stones' Paul McCoy. In fact, almost half of Fallen's 11 songs are piano-driven ballads that suggest Tori Amos if she wore too much mascara and recorded for the Projekt label. The other half of the album does include flashes of the single's PG-rated nu-metal ("Everybody's Fool," "Going Under"). But it's the symphonic goth rock of groups like Type O Negative that influences most of Fallen. Ethereal synths float above Ben Moody's crunching guitar in "Haunted," while "Whisper" even features apocalyptic strings and a scary chorus of Latin voices right out of Carmina Burana. "Tourniquet" is an anguished, urgent rocker driven by chugging guitars and spiraling synths, with brooding lyrics that reference Evanescence's Christian values: "Am I too lost to be saved?/Am I too lost?/My God! My tourniquet/Return to me salvation." The song is Fallen's emotional center point and defines the band's sound. ~ Johnny Loftus
Picture Tori Amos fronting Nickelback and you'll get an idea of the sound behind Evanescence, an Arkansas quartet whose introduction to the world came via the DAREDEVIL soundtrack. With its debut FALLEN, Evanescence further pushes the envelope on the aforementioned description, with frontwoman Amy Lee pouring her light-yet-strong vocals into the aggro-rock workout "Bring Me to Life" and industrial trip-hop of "My Last Breath." Although guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt leave no riff unplayed on hard-hitting cuts like "Going Under" and "Taking Over Me," Lee brings a nice balance to the table with her gorgeous piano runs, which come to the fore on the very Amos-like "Hello." The perfect balance of hard and soft is met on "Haunted" with its ambient nuance stoked by clattering beats and loops, crunching riffs, and the use of a children's choir. Goth-like in mood yet nu-metal in execution, FALLEN could very well have been where Amos' first group Y Kant Tori Read ended up had they not come along 15 years too soon.

Artist Overview
Coming from the heartland of America (Little Rock, AR), Evanescence mixes the heavy guitar crunch of nu-metal with the moody atmosphere and electronic flavoring of goth rock. Singer/keyboardist Amy Lee also bears the influence of singer/songwriters like Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette. The band built up a following with a couple of independent releases before their first widely distributed album, 2003's FALLEN, made them a coast-to-coast smash

Rolling Stone (4/17/03, p.103)
- 3 stars out of 5 - "...When vocalist Amy Lee croons...she gives FALLEN a creepy spiritual tinge that the new-metal boys lack..."

smother.net
Evanescence`s full-length debut, Fallen,/i>, has been a long time in the making, as the band initially signed a deal as a rather weak gothic metal group, yet have blossomed into an astounding alternative group with enough potential to become the next major player in the music world. Propelled by Amy Lee`s beautiful voice, Evanescence balance between being an over-powering modern rock quartet and a slightly edgier industrial/nu-metal hybrid. Quite an unusual amalgamation of sounds to be sure, yet Fallen is nothing if not fluidly accessible for all listeners. To be honest, while this is a four piece ensemble, Evanescence would be yet another formulaic industry android if not for Lee`s dominant presence behind the mic. This ravishing young woman possesses a voice that could seduce the deaf, and a range that is inspiring, complete with falsetto highs and operatic lows. By now everyone has heard "Bring Me to Life", as it`s placement in the action blockbuster Daredevil led to an overwhelming radio presence in the blink of an eye, yet one should not write Evanescence off as a female Linkin Park simply because of the programmed beats and assistance of 12 Stones Paul McCoy. If one`s looking for that rappy male voice to appear elsewhere on the album, you`re sadly mistaken, yet it is only a benefit to Evanescence to not be held back by such a vocal style. Lee conveys emotion in such a way that each and every song weighs on one`s soul.

Fallen is one of the best Cd's that you will find. Their great blend of different forms of music truly inspire the soul. From the soft piano begininng and extremely talented voice of lead singer, Amy Lee in the song, "My Immortal". To the fast up beat and haunting song, "Bring me to life". This Cd is a great buy and you are bound to love it!

5 of 5 One of the most amazing bands... Sunday, August 31, 2003
lachicaesloca16 from Herkimer, NY
Amy Lee's voice is like no other. It can't be immitated. And I love it. She's everything I'd choose to be given the chance. The band's mixture of crunching metal, sometimes operatic vocals and sweet lyrics make this band a huge success.

5 of 5 breathing life to music.... Friday, May 09, 2003
A Listener from new york, ny
simply one of the best album of 2003! mix avril and linkin park together, you still wouldn't get the results evanescence has presented to us! for those who are a bit drowned out by mainstream clubbing music and needed something to just reflect upon, along with some great vocal and instrumentals, or would like to have a brief intro to light-goth, this is it!

5 of 5 Incredible... Friday, April 25, 2003
Tianna from detroit
that's the only word that comes close to describing this cd. it's about freaking time we got a female who truly rocks, with such an enchanting voice to boot. she can change her voice from strong to soft at the drop of a dime, and make both of them sound great. this cd is all i have been able to listen to for days. if you like bring me to life, you will love this cd. if some of your other musical favorites are tori amos and tool (like mine), you will love this cd. if you have even considered picking up this cd, get it. you will not be disappointed.

5 of 5 Beautiful voice meets hard rock Friday, February 21, 2003
djmykee from NJ U.S.A.
Soothing is this girls voice, but pumped is the music. Her voice is like Sarah Mclachlan, mixed with thick guitars. I've heard clips and previews of all her songs. I got hooked on the song "Bring me to Life" from the movie Dare Devil. Check it out if your taste varies from hard rock, rock rap, to soft you will dig this CD.

5 of 5 Simply Amazing Tuesday, February 18, 2003
Obiwan0008 from Fremont, Ca
Where has this band been hiding? After only hearing the two songs off the Daredevil Soundtrack I could tell that this band is going places. Talk about talent, the lead singer isn't more than 19 yet she sings with power beyond her years. I'm really excited to see a rock band with a girl vocalist that actually has a good voice. The two songs out so far are "Bring Me To Life" and "My Immortal". The first is much louder and faster with a strong rock beat. The second is more of a slow ballad. However, both songs convey very intense emotion. I highly recommend this album.
