Editor's Note

The story behind the adaptation of Frank Herbert's massive, seminal science fiction novel DUNE is a well-known one, spanning 20 years and involving directors as diverse as Alejandro Jodorowsky and Ridley Scott, before the job fell to David Lynch. DUNE tells a story set far in the future, in the year 10191, where factions war over control of the substance named "spice." The clan Atreides currently produces the spice, found on the planet Arrakis, but they are plotted against by the Harkonnens. After a stunning betrayal, it is revealed that Paul Atreides, heir to the clan, is actually the prophesized savior of the Fremen, who are native people of Arrakis. DUNE is famously an enormous, expensive production that was critically lambasted and ended up a financial flop. In part to recoup their losses, Universal Studio edited a longer edition of the film to be shown on television, but director Lynch disavowed this version. But in subsequent years the film has been reappraised and reappreciated, and the extended version has been coveted by fans worldwide. Both the original and longer cut of the film are available together in DUNE: EXTENDED EDITION.

Professional Reviews
Chicago Sun-Times 2 of 10
It took Dune about nine minutes to completely strip me of my anticipation. This movie is a real mess, an incomprehensible, ugly, unstructured, pointless excursion into the murkier realms of one of the most confusing screenplays of all time. Even the color is no good; everything is seen through a sort of dusty yellow filter, as if the film was left out in the sun too long. Yes, you might say, but the action is, after all, on a desert planet where there isn't a drop of water, and there's sand everywhere. David Lean solved that problem in Lawrence Of Arabia, where he made the desert look beautiful and mysterious, not shabby and drab. - Roger Ebert

5 of 5 Worth getting the extended edition Tuesday, September 25, 2007
A Viewer from Orange, CA

I owned the theatrical release of Dune before purchasing the extended edition. I feel it is worth the extra money to own the extended, even if you already have the original. Dune is a complicated movie that may people have a hard time following, especially the first time through, so if you intend to show it to other people I recommend the extended edition. It contains several new and longer scenes, including a summation of the plot at the beginning in the form of a new narrative; all of these addition really help the uninitiated to follow the plot and enjoy the film further.
