Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Recorded in the 1970s.
Dub music is a spin-off of reggae music, where the studio's mixing board is used as an instrument, an artfully used device for taking a finished song and de- and re-constructing it in unusual ways. Two of dub's leading lights, the influential King Tubby and his protege Prince Jammy, take songs by Johnnie Clark, Jackie Mittoo, and Delroy Wilson and add explosions of echo and eerie sound effects, de-emphasizing certain instruments and distorting others, until the result is completely their own.
Tubby was and remains a major influence on reggae, dub, electronica and experimental rock bands--the music of Mad Professor, Tricky, and Laika, among others, bears the stamp of his uniquely inventive style. The musicians on this collection include such reggae stars as Earl "Chinna" Smith, Ansell Collins, and the ubiquitous rhythm team Sly & Robbie. DUB GONE 2 CRAZY is highly recommended to reggae fans who like their sounds less polished, fans of modern dub acts such as the Dub Syndicate and the Bush Chemists, and rock fans who like "spacey" sounds with deep rhythm.

Professional Reviews
Q (11/96, p.153)
- 4 Stars (out of 5)
- "...flawless....presenting an approach to sound that still infiltrates almost every aspect of modern music....great gouts of echo, huge gobbets of drums clattering about like iron ghosts in the dark and a sense that primitive technology was about a thousand times more mysterious than anyone's 48-track studios..."

Alternative Press (1/97, p.73)
- 4 (out of 5)
- "...Tubby, Jammy, Scientist, Lee Perroy, and Keith Hudson were the early masters, the people who were puching the envelope while still kepping the feel."
