Annotation:
Contrary to the advice of American health institutions, famed author Dr. Atkins, encourages readers to adhere to a strict low-carbohydrate diet that is heavily saturated with animal protein. Additionally, he advises his audience to replace fruits and vegetables with vitamin supplements. Carbohydrate restriction, he argues, helps dieters lose weight, remain youthful, and resist several diseases associated with aging. Meat lovers will indulge in his high-fat meal plan, which includes an abundance of egg, beef, and poultry dishes that may be smothered in rich sauces.

Praise
Publishers Weekly
"The actual diet portion of this book is only about 70 pages and does not include a meal-by-meal plan or caloric charts, omissions serious dieters will notice." 12/20/1999

Author Bio

The pioneering nutritionist Dr. Robert Atkins was born and raised in Ohio. He graduated from Cornell Medical School in 1955, and soon opened a private practice as a cardiologist in New York City. Concerned about his weight and general health, Atkins followed a low-carbohydrate diet with success, and soon afterward, he focused his practice on nutrition and wellness. He gained a wide national audience through appearances on the Tonight show, as well as articles in popular magazines such as Vogue. In 1972, he published his classic bestseller DR. ATKINS' DIET REVOLUTION. While his approach was popular with the general public, it was controversial in the medical community. Atkins was criticized by the American Medical Association, and by Dean Ornish, a popular diet guru and rival who advocated a diet high in grains, vegetables, and fruit. Atkins and his approach went out of popularity for a decade or so in the 1980s. Meanwhile, he founded the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine in New York City, where he advocated a holistic, nutritional approach to health. In the 1990s, new studies seemed to vindicate some of the claims about fat in the diet, and his books were repackaged and republished. He also published ATKINS FOR LIFE, a major book. In April 2003, Dr. Atkins suffered a fall on the sidewalk outside the Atkins Center, and died after a short time in a coma. At the time of his death he had a book on both the New York Times hardcover and paperback best seller lists. Years after his death, his books still sell, the work of his foundation continues, and even his rival, Dr. Ornish, has since had positive words for some of Atkins's ideas.

Defiance and Dietary
Know-How: The Keys to
Holding Back Aging

The first words I wrote for this book were its title. Thesubject was a foregone conclusion; now that I'm approachingseventy, it's difficult to focus on any subject otherthan making sure that I stay eternally young. That focus hasled to enough productive experience that I'm sure I can pass onsome pretty exciting information to you.

Whenever I reflect on what I must teach you to age-proofyourself, as much as can be, the word "defiance" always jumpsinto my consciousness. This relates less to defying the agingprocess, as the title of this book would lead you to believe, thanto defying the prevailing beliefs. The more I learn about how tolive more and more years without feeling their effects, the moreI realize that most of the information we are
