4 of 5 A great help that needs help Wednesday, April 15, 2009 A Viewer from dallas, TX
Simply not simple enough. Lots of good information to be had, but lots of rambling as well. Color correction is why I bought this and it just doesn't go in depth enough on the topic or walk you through optimization of your tv very well. There's no information on changing Gain/Bias for front end projection. However, if you obtain more information from the internet the DVD does help. I have heard the NTSC version is a more fulfilling investment. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Count on Joe Monday, August 25, 2008 A Viewer from Fort Worth, TX
I have Joe Kane's NTSC version and jumped at the chance to get the HDTV version when I found it on the Buy.com site. It was just what I expected (and I'm a former TV studio maintenance engineer). Thanks, Joe. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 This helped a lot Monday, May 19, 2008 A Viewer from Austin, TX
This actually helped my picture a lot. The DVD is very informative and walks you through every step. It also does a good job of explaining what these settings mean. I think I will still get a professional service to come out, but until then, this has helped me adjust my HD set to look much better than factory defaults. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great tool for the DIY Monday, May 05, 2008 A Viewer from Laurel, MT
Navigation of the menus is a little lacking, but overall this disc got my new flat panel Sammy to look outstanding - granted, this is no replacement for a PROFESSIONAL calibration (and when I say professional, I don't mean Best Buy), but it really helps to get the colors within desired limits and REALLY helps to bring out the blacks - overall, I am a VERY satisfied customer - my BluRays went from looking great to looking OUTSTANDING :) Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 It should be essential Tuesday, April 15, 2008 A Viewer from aliso viejo, ca
Hopefully, most people know that HDTV's should be calibrated. They're almost always pre-set for colors and brightness that unrealistically "pop" on the screen to make the TV stand out from the sea of other TV's at the store. Rarely are TV's optimally set out of the box. This is one of the best tutorials about HDTV and how to properly calibrate your TV. You can pay a professional $300 to do it, or do it yourself with this DVD. My Sharp Aquos was pretty good prior to calibration. Now, it's amazing. It wows everyone that sees it. Text is sharper. Wider white/black dynamic range. Much more realistic colors. It's all so much nicer. Comes with lots of test patterns and how to use them properly. Even comes with a blue/red/green screen that you put in front of your eyes to accurately calibrate colors. Only about 1/4 of the disk is actually about calibrating. Maybe 3/4 is about the background of HDTV and why calibration is important. That part is interesting for some people, but probably boring for most. Overall, the process took me about an hour to do. The results speak for themselves. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 THE reference standard for HDTV calibration Tuesday, April 15, 2008 Nick Solema from Cleveland, OH
Joe Kane is a legend among home theather enthusiasts, and for good reason. His experience and breadth of knowledge on all things Home Theater is unsurpassed, and this Blu-Ray disc is his best disc yet.
WARNING: This disc is incredibly deep and thorough. Those looking for a quick "do this, tweak that, done in 10 minutes" setup disc, this is NOT for you. But if you just spent a sizeable chunk on a nice HDTV and/or surround sound setup, and you want to get the absolute best performance possible out of it, then this disc is definitely worth $20 and a couple hours of your time. You'll learn more than you ever though you'd want to know about how an HDTV works, and you'll be better off for it. Was this review helpful?
