Experience Drobo - Zero Management, Maximum peace of mind.
Drobo is the world’s best storage experience. This safe, expandable storage solution protects your data against a hard drive crash. Drobo’s built-in software automatically self-heals around drive failures and data errors and expands capacity dynamically when you add a drive. Start with two drives, grow to four, then upsize smaller drives to get Terabytes of protection. Add drives to Drobo at any time. There’s no down time, data migration or waiting to access new capacity. With nothing to configure or manage, Drobo is the ideal solution for primary storage as well as backup.
Drobo holds up to four 3.5” SATA hard drives and allows you to mix and match drive capacities and speeds from any manufacturer. Drobo’s LEDs tells you how Drobo is doing and how much free capacity you have. If you’ve ever successfully navigated a traffic signal, you’re a certified Drobo expert. Drobo is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux.
So, get rid of multiple external drives. Avoid the complexity of RAID. Attach Drobo storage robot to your system and let it manage your storage so you don’t have to. Just connect Drobo to your Mac or PC and you’re done! No software required. No RAID levels. No management or configuration. Drobo does everything for you.

5 of 5 Great Product Friday, March 13, 2009 Jim from Selinsgrove, PA
Drobo is a awesome product. Easy to setup and use. Your data is always protected. This is not just an external hard drive, it manages the data to keep things safe in the event of a drive failure. When my hard drive crashed I simply replaced it with another drive and Drobo never missed a beat. I would highly recommend this product for anyone serious about protecting their data. I initially installed it ... slick, good, great ... with a 1T drive as #1 and a 320 Gig as #2, just put a hundred Gigs plus backup and got a warning that it was low on space ... the warning was because it did not have enough space to back itself up on the smaller drive ... I bought 3 more 1T drives ... but still shows only 2 T available ... I haven't found any info about how to adjust this yet ... Was this review helpful?

Very nicely done. Highly recommended for novices. Those who know what they are doing will feel a bit restricted, but Drobo is more aimed at the newbie/novice. There is a bit of noise (from fan & hard drives), but it doesn't bother me. Extremely easy to setup. Biggest con is the price - but you're buying it for the simplicity and functionality - in that order too. =) Unless you want or need the firewire, then go with the 1st generation & save some money. I already owned the Drobo USB and as a backup drive it does great if you leave it overnight, but when I heard about the Firewire 800 model I was excited to get that high performance model. What a disappointment! It actually had a slower read time than the USB and only slightly higher write. I tested these with the Blackmagic Intensity's bundled disk performance test which I am sure is not the most accurate, but it does show lack luster performance gains compared to the USB model. Here is the breakdown using this with a MAC G5 4 core 2.3Ghz with 13Gb ram and standard controller:
1. single system drive Maxtor 750Gb Disk Read in Mb 62.1 Write 43.2
2. 3 Maxtor 750Gb in striped RAID 0 Disk Read 195.9 Write 187.8
3. New Drobo using USB 4 1TB Seagate Barracuda 32Mb Cache Read 17.5 Write 14.6
4. Drobo using Firewire 800 with 4 1TB Barracuda 32mb Cache Read 15 Write 26.9
In conclusion you can see a significant gain in write speed using Firewire, but actually slower for streaming anything. It was a waist of the extra $150 unless you are out of USB ports and don't want to buy a $5 hub. Get the USB and backup for much less. Was this review helpful?
