Ada (Kidman) has vowed to wait for Inman (Law), but as the war drags on and letters go unanswered, she must find the will to survive. At war's end, hearts will be dashed, dreams fulfilled, and the strength of the human spirit tested...but not broken! Directed by Academy Award winner Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, 1996).

"Writer-director Anthony Minghella has meticulously crafted an intimate epic."  Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter
"A grand and poignant movie epic..."  Richard Corliss, Time Magazine
"It's funny, it's heartbreaking, it's scary, it's exhilarating."  Stephen Hunter, Washington Post

Editor's Note

Directed by Anthony Minghella (THE ENGLISH PATIENT), this Civil War saga addresses romance, friendship, and the ravages of war--both in the field and on the home front. Far more than a simple love story, Minghella's film captures the horrors of war for both those fighting it, and for those left behind. Based on the Charles Frazier novel, this is a tale of hope, longing, redemption, second chances, and faith.

Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman) is a proper lady who accompanies her preacher father (Donald Sutherland) to Cold Mountain, North Carolina. She waits for her love, W.P. Inman (Jude Law)--a sensitive man with little use for many words--to return from war. In the process she learns basic survival skills and finds strength from no-nonsense Ruby (Renée Zellweger), a spitfire who can work the land as well as any man. Meanwhile, wounded Inman has had enough of war and killing, and is slowly working his way back to Ada despite the perils of being a Confederate deserter. Law and Kidman are genuinely touching as two virtual strangers who invest all of their faith in each other, and Zellweger is astounding as the uncultured but compassionate Ruby. Rounding out the cast is an impressive array of actors, including Brendan Gleeson, Ray Winstone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jack White (of the White Stripes), Kathy Baker, Giovanni Ribisi, and many others.

5 of 5 cold mountain review Tuesday, June 12, 2007
A Viewer from Ma

The Blockbuster hit Cold Mountain was a great success after its 2003 release. The movie is a Civil War love story that shows a southern Confederate point of view of the war. It shows how a young southern woman reacts to life during the war and how she has to adjust to not having a man around to do the work at home. Throughout her adjustment to life on the farm, she is stuggling with her separation to her significant other, who is fighting for the Confederate army. While she is at home on Cold Mountain, he is fighting to find his way home to reunite with his love. This love story is very different from many other Civil War movies. It's stress on the effects of war on society shows a different perspective that isn’t usually focused on in typical Civil War battle movies. Most Civil War films center their story around the battlefield, but Cold Mountain shows more social effects. Although this movie is from a southern perspective, there is not a strong confederate bias point of view. The movie stays true to the facts to show what the war was really like but the the story line favors the south because of its setting. Overall Cold Mountain is a moving love story that depicts southen life and society during the Civil War.

4 of 5 Cold Mountain a Depiction of Civil War Society Tuesday, June 12, 2007
Maria D. from Massachusetts
"Cold Mountain" traced the journey of Inman, a deserting Confederate soldier, home to North Carolina in order to meet his love Ada. Along his journey, Inman met many colorful characters who had been weathered by the Civil War. Among these characters included a currupted minister, a lonely widow, and a family of runaway slaves. As if his journey home from Virginia was not difficult enough, Inman was forced to dodge the home-guard hunting down other deserters as himself. As for his love back home, Ada, she was left to run the household after her father passed away. During this time, Ada transformed from a propper woman to a revolutionary woman. With help from Ruby, Ada learned how to tend of a crop, build a fence, respect herself, and gain a sence of accomplishment. When Inman finally made it home to his love, he met an unfortunate fate. "Cold Mounatin" is not a Civil War movie to watch if knowledge of the combat style of the Civil War is wanted to be observed. The movie shows the social aspect of women in the time and their roles. During the movie Ada took on the role of the man of the house as many women had during the Civil War. Opportunities like this lead to envolvement of women in the Women's Rights Movenments. Because Inman deserted the Confederate Army, it showed that he was not in the war to fight for secession, instead he fought due to his loyalty to North Carolina. This showed that not all Confederate soldiers fighting in the war wanted to become a seperate nation.

4 of 5 Cold Mountain Tuesday, June 12, 2007
Marissa from Massachusetts
Cold Mountain opens with a battle where the main character and Confederate soldier, Inman , is fighting against the Union in the Civil War. The movie primarily follows Inman's journey home from war to Cold Mountain South Carolina to reunite with his pre-war love Ada. Along the way, Inman encounters many different people who all play a significance in his journey home and in his life. More then just a story about the Civil War, Cold Mountain also contains elements of love. Because Inman leaves war to travel home to Ada this movie is able to demonstrate the devotion and longing for someone during a period of hardship and destruction (suchas war.) After watching the movie, I felt that I was able to better understand the time period of the Civil War and the destruction it not only caused the country, but also the people. I was able to clearly understand and follow the storyline of the film and found it historically relevant and interesting. I also enjoyed how the director, Minghella, incorporated the element of love into his movie because I felt that it allowed for a diversion from the theme of war. If it wasn't for the fact that I had to watch a Civil War movie for my school project, I most likely would have never watched Cold Mountain, but having no choice, it positively allowed me to broaden my horizons with movie genres and receive a different outlook on movies such as this. Overall, I would recommend Cold Mountain to anyone, because I feel that it can be related to by all audiences and goes the distance to not only relate to war but also real life.
