Kai Ting's family has left China and the Communist revolution to live in San Francisco. Kai's mother is affectionate and doting, and works hard to pass on Chinese traditions to her children. But when Kai is six, his mother dies, and his father marries Edna, a Pennsylvania Dutch woman who is hostile to Chinese customs. She begins locking Kai out of his own house after school and on weekends, and he is left to the mercy of street bullies who call him "China Boy" and beat him up. As he grows up, Kai finds solace in boxing and Chinese philosophy, eventually building up the skills to enable him to defeat the bullies and defend himself against his stepmother's cruelty.

| Author Bio| Gus Lee | | Gus Lee has spent much of his life in San Francisco, where he worked for the San Francisco Call-Bulletin and the YMCA. He also served as the assistant dean of students at the University of California at Davis, developing programs for the Asian American Studies department. A lawyer and former U.S. Army corporal, Lee is heavily involved in bettering the lives of children and teenagers. He came late to writing, but his books have garnered much attention and success. |
