In the ever-unfolding and expanding musical lives of multi-platinum Massachusetts-based band Staind, Chapter V opens the book on a new phase of their journey. The 12-song album, produced by David Botrill (Tool, Godsmack) features the first single, the classic, mid-tempo and dynamic 'Right Here,' as well standouts like the edgy, dark 'Falling,' the poignant, retro-feeling 'Schizophrenic Conversations,' and the soaring 'Everything Changes.' Chapter V is Staind at their best, with songs ranging from forceful to quiet, from industrial-tinged to melodious, often within one song and with singer Aaron Lewis' instantly recognizable voice heartfelt and fervent. Lyrically, Lewis isn't afraid to look deep, and what he finds--the good, bad and ugly--is translated into soul-baring songs that he often agonizes over. 'I'm my own worst critic,' Lewis admits. 'The personal songs; it's a way for me to get those things out, because I wouldn't feel comfortable saying them to anyone. I'm pretty bad about being an internalist--I hold everything down and then explode. It's better for everyone around me that I put that explosion down into lyrics rather than just exploding on somebody.'

"Their self-seriousness comes with a melodic tenderness that's rare in the genre."  Entertainment Weekly

With 2001's multi-platinum-selling album BREAK THE CYCLE and the accompanying hit "It's Been Awhile," Springfield, Massachusetts-based hard rockers Staind went from nu-metal contenders to crossover mega-stars. Luckily, however, fame did little to change the band's trademark mix of solidly melodic metal, earnest lyrics, and unpretentious what-you-see-is-what-you-get image. Two albums later, CHAPTER V shows the band branching out a little, albeit in a typically understated, tasteful way. Thematically, many of the songs here concern the price of sudden success and the group's relationship with its uber-loyal fanbase. "Reply" is a heartfelt thanks for every adoring letter, while "Run Away" expresses uncertainty about the fickleness of fortune. Musically, the group sticks to what it does best; a mix of grungy metal and heartfelt ballads, but with a few welcome twists such as the tricky Robert Fripp-like guitar picking on "Paper Jesus" and "Please" and the complex rhythm-section figures on "Right Here." "Everything Changes" is one of the band's best-ever slow songs, sounding more like the Goo Doo Dolls than Godsmack. A subtly affecting album of substantial music, CHAPTER V showcases Staind at the top of its game.

Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone 6 of 10
On their fifth album, Staind are still getting angsty like it was 1999, dropping adenoidal harmonies and peddling a unique combo of AA-meeting ballads and fetal-position metal. Chapter V's "Paper Jesus" works up a thrashing groove, and on "Cross to Bear" singer Aaron Lewis digs deep for a lung-stretching battle with his guitarist. But it's when Staind crank down the sludge and slacken the tempos that things get heavy in a bad way. "Take This" and "King of All Excuses" are odiously anti-fun confessionals, and on "Right Here" Lewis goes falsetto to admit he's "got some imperfections," which is like Tony Montana admitting he did a little cocaine. - Christian Hoard

Bio
Staind

With chart-topping international success, more than eight million in album sales and critical accolades, Staind singer AARON LEWIS, guitarist MIKE MUSHOK, bassist JOHNNY APRIL and drummer JON WYSOCKI--are leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary music scene.

Staind's much-anticipated new album 14 Shades Of Grey was released May 20 on Flip/Elektra.

14 Shades Of Grey was produced by Josh Abraham and mixed by Andy Wallace, both of whom did the same honors for Break The Cycle.

14 Shades Of Grey was recorded in Los Angeles and Miami. Price To Play--the first single from 14 Shades Of Grey--is an emotionally gripping song that was released to radio in early April. In its first week, Price To Play debuted in the Top Ten at three radio formats (Alternative Rock 10*, Active Rock 6* and Mainstream Rock 8*). First run copies of 14 Shades Of Grey include a limited edition bonus DVD disc featuring footage of the band from the early years to the present, along with album lyrics and new band photos.

Just prior to release of 14 Shades Of Grey, Staind performed free shows in Boston (Avalon Theatre), New York (Manhattan Center), Los Angeles (Wiltern Theatre) and Chicago (House of Blues). In addition to these special shows, Staind made same-day in-store appearances in those cities.

Staind's intensity was also displayed on their 2002 gold-certified MTV Unplugged DVD.

Staind's critically acclaimed third album Break The Cycle (Flip/Elektra) became a certified global smash, fueled by the moody, introspective singles "Fade," For You, Epiphany, and "It's Been Awhile (which spent 16 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart). Writing in the Los Angeles Times (6/30/01), Robert Hilburn praised the band's dark, pulverizing music, further noting Staind's Aaron Lewis writes with a human, convincing edge.

Break The Cycle was released May 22, 2001 and entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #1 with over 716,000 copies sold. The album went on to eventually sell nearly seven million copies.

Staind's participation in Family Values Tour 2001 marked the second time the Massachusetts band was associated with the cutting-edge rock tour. The band also performed on the 1999 Family Values trek, which resulted in a gold-certified FAMILY VALUES TOUR 1999 CD, highlighted by the #1 rock single "Outside" featuring LEWIS and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst.

Staind have played for hundreds of thousands of fans on tours with Kid Rock, Monster Magnet, Sevendust and with their Family Values brethren Korn and Limp Bizkit. Staind's early radio success included three major rock radio/video hits with "Just Go," "Mudshovel" and "Home."

Staind released their Flip/Elektra debut album DYSFUNCTION in April 1999. The album achieved platinum-plus status. Early on, Staind got a demo to Fred Durst, who invited the band to his home and rehearsal space in Jacksonville, Florida. After Durst played some of their music over the phone for Jordan Schur, president of Flip Records, they became the newest signing to the label's roster.

Staind played their first gig in February of 1995. After a year and a half of steady playing in New England, Staind self-released their debut album TORMENTED in October 1996.
