3 of 5 Middle of the road Thursday, November 29, 2007
A Customer from Los Alamos, NM

Having used earlier generations of TeraStations and being somewhat disappointed in performance, I had high hopes for the drastic improvements in netnwork performance touted on Buffalo's web page. During installation, it took a call to customer support to learn that the time on the TeraStation Pro II must be within 5 minutes of the Domain Controller if you want to attach it to an Active Directory Domain. Once installed with a Gbit switch, Tech Support informed me that expected throughput for this model was about 1GB file in 5-7 minutes (approx 3MB/sec). The most I could ever get was about 2.25 MB/sec. Considering the potential of Gbit ethernet, I consider this a poorly performing system. When watching the network performance during a transfer, the network is not taxed at all, leaving me to assume that the TeraStation itself is quite slow. Had the performance numbers been posted on the web page, I would have seriously reconsidered another product.

4 of 5 Perfect cost effective storage solution for small Wednesday, November 28, 2007
A Customer from Temecula, CA
The TeraStation Pro II is the perfect solution for small networks or home offices that need a simple storage and/or backup solution for their data. The unit can be implemented as a stand alone device or it can be joined to a workgroup or a Windows NT/2000/2003 domain, however; the Windows Active Directory interface is a little complicated and not very user friendly. Other than that the appliance is rock solid and has an amazing data throughput via the 10/100/1000 MB NIC.

5 of 5 Trouble-free massive NAS storage Monday, September 24, 2007
jaxbuilder from Orange Park, FL
I bought this unit so I could convert my classical CD collection to mp3 files and have them available on-line. I was waiting on starting this project until such a large and affordable disc came available. The unit was completely straightforward to set up. About all I had to do was plug it into the router. Connection was straightforward to two XP PCs on my network (one wired, one wireless). It seems a little slow if I transfer an extremely large amount of data to the unit, but in normal use (creating mp3 files from a CD), I notice no delay. I can play the stored mp3 files from both PCs simultaneously with no problem. I have the unit set up for RAID5 (system default) and I experimented with a simulated failure. I powered down the unit, took out one of the four discs and restarted. I was able to read from and write to the disc successfully. After shutting it down, reconnecting the disc and powering up, I was able to initiate the recovery process successfully (this does not happen automatically; you have to start the process via the user interface program). The recovery took several hours, but I could read and write to the disc during the recovery. I'm not a network guru, but for my home use this unit seems excellent in every way.
