| When Kelly Clarkson became the first American Idol in the fall of 2002, no one could have predicted the worldwide success as a recording artist that would follow for her. In debuting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling more than 225,000 copies its first week, Kelly’s debut single "Before Your Love/A Moment Like This" re-wrote the rules for the U.S. singles market. Her initial chart triumph only hinted at the success to come, as the single streaked to #1 on the Top 40 radio charts and its video became a staple at MTV. Her debut album Thankful debuted at #1 on Billboard’s album chart, scanning 300,000 pieces in seven days and knocking hip-hop superstar 50 Cent from the chart’s top perch. The album’s lead single, "Miss Independent," went straight to #1 on the pop chart, and the video was retired on MTV’s TRL for maxing out its airplay potential. Kelly went on to headline her own U.S. tour and lent a song to the worldwide hit movie Love, Actually. With contributions from some of the biggest producers in music today (John Shanks, Max Martin, Clif Magness, Ben Moody), Kelly’s Breakaway record will further broaden her base as a worldwide pop star.

In late 2004, the Texas native delivered on the promise of her sophomore record's title, BREAKAWAY, by diving headfirst into alternative-rock-flavored pop of the Avril Lavigne/Michelle Branch variety. Though there are still a few R&B-inspired moments here ("Because of You" is a soulful, string-laced ballad in the best Mariah Carey tradition), most of the album has a much harder edge than fans of THANKFUL would likely expect. In other spots, Clarkson goes the moody chanteuse route, particularly on "Addicted," where she channels the spooky melancholy of Fiona Apple with surprising conviction. Clarkson herself co-writes several songs on the disc, which, combined with the record's unexpected musical variety, suggests a talented vocalist coming into her own as an artist as well as a performer. | Producer: Chantal Kreviazuk; Raine Maida; Ben Moody; David Hodges; Max Martin |
| | Artist Overview | | As the very first winner of the AMERICAN IDOL television show competition, Kelly Clarkson was inevitably pegged as little more than a manufactured pop commodity. The surprisingly versatile singer managed to survive against expectations, however, and released one of the most infectious singles of 2005, "Since U Been Gone." The success of the song not only endeared Clarkson to a tremendously diverse cross-section of the music listening population, it altered her status from mere contest winner to genuine pop sensation and pointed to a career worth following. |
