| When Kelly Clarkson became the first American Idol in the fall of 2002, no one could have predicted the worldwide success as a recording artist that would follow for her. In debuting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling more than 225,000 copies its first week, Kellys debut single "Before Your Love/A Moment Like This" re-wrote the rules for the U.S. singles market. Her initial chart triumph only hinted at the success to come, as the single streaked to #1 on the Top 40 radio charts and its video became a staple at MTV. Her debut album Thankful debuted at #1 on Billboards album chart, scanning 300,000 pieces in seven days and knocking hip-hop superstar 50 Cent from the charts top perch. The albums lead single, "Miss Independent," went straight to #1 on the pop chart, and the video was retired on MTVs TRL for maxing out its airplay potential. Kelly went on to headline her own U.S. tour and lent a song to the worldwide hit movie Love, Actually. With contributions from some of the biggest producers in music today (John Shanks, Max Martin, Clif Magness, Ben Moody), Kellys Breakaway record will further broaden her base as a worldwide pop star.
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Personnel include: Kelly Clarkson (vocals); Max Martin, Lukasz Gottwald (various instruments); John Shanks (guitar, keyboards, bass guitar); Raine Maida, Ben Moody, Phil X (guitar); Clif Magness (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, keyboards, bass guitar, programming); David Hodges (piano, programming); Marty O'Brien (bass guitar); Josh Freese, Shawn Pelton, Jeff Rothschild, Olle Dahlstedt (drums). | | Recording information: 2004. | | With 2003's THANKFUL, Kelly Clarkson proved that her AMERICAN IDOL win was no fluke by putting out a solid album of gospel-influenced R&B performed with the panache of a seasoned veteran. In late 2004, the Texas native delivered on the promise of her sophomore record's title, BREAKAWAY, by diving headfirst into alternative-rock-flavored pop of the Avril Lavigne/Michelle Branch variety. Though there are still a few R&B-inspired moments here ("Because of You" is a soulful, string-laced ballad in the best Mariah Carey tradition), most of the album has a much harder edge than fans of THANKFUL would likely expect. In other spots, Clarkson goes the moody chanteuse route, particularly on "Addicted," where she channels the spooky melancholy of Fiona Apple with surprising conviction. Clarkson herself co-writes several songs on the disc, which, combined with the record's unexpected musical variety, suggests a talented vocalist coming into her own as an artist as well as a performer. | Producer: Chantal Kreviazuk; Raine Maida; Ben Moody; David Hodges; Max Martin |
| | Artist Overview | | As the very first winner of the AMERICAN IDOL television show competition, Kelly Clarkson was inevitably pegged as little more than a manufactured pop commodity. The surprisingly versatile singer managed to survive against expectations, however, and released one of the most infectious singles of 2005, "Since U Been Gone." The success of the song not only endeared Clarkson to a tremendously diverse cross-section of the music listening population, it altered her status from mere contest winner to genuine pop sensation and pointed to a career worth following. |

1 of 5 your 9 year old might like it ... Friday, February 17, 2006 A Listener from Nashville, TN
That's the only reason I heard of it. My God - and I thought pop music was bad when I was a kid! At least they don't even pretend that they write their own material these days. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 The perfect record of 2004-2005 Thursday, November 10, 2005 Chris Eberlein from Boston, MA
To those naysayers out there, I'd just like to say this album is by far the best release of late 2004 and 2005 (there's no denying it)...so far. Sure, it has its low moment, a.k.a the nothing-special single "Because of You," but the rest of the album kicks butt because it's a surefire hit (containing hit after hit after hit after hit...ok, I think you get the picture). Breakaway, Kelly Clarkson's sophomore effort, goes well beyond being a No. 1 CD, and deservedly so. "Breakaway" is a beautiful semi-slow ballad about breaking free from past constraints and flying; chart-topping "Since U Been Gone" is THE song of '05 with its heavy drum beats and belty, but never over-the-top vocals; and "Behind These Hazel Eyes" is by far just as great as its two chart-busting smash predecessors, and is doing excellent on Top 40 radio across the country at that. "Gone" is a Britney Spears' Oops! kind of song that's got a more rock beat. "Hear Me" is an Evanescence-like tune that is sure to be a single. The touchstone is, of course, the closing track, the lilting LIVE cut "Beautiful Disaster" from her first album. There is NO way not to like this album. Congrats Kelly...I think you got all of our attention. Was this review helpful?
