| | Professional Reviews | ReelViews 9 of 10 [American] American Beauty doesn't trailblaze a path into hitherto untouched cinematic territory, but its presentation of vivid characters in interesting situations makes the story seem fresh. In part because it's not a complete downer and in part because it doesn't cheat the audience, American Beauty is emotionally satisfying. There's a sense of poignancy at the end, but also the feeling that we have been on an incredible trip through the lives and souls of three perfectly-realized characters. In a year that boasts few truly memorable motion pictures, Mendes can stake a claim alongside the likes of Kubrick and Egoyan as one whose cinematic vision both challenges and entertains. - James Berardinelli DVD Verdict 10 of 10 [Terms] Terms Of Endearment just may sneak up on you. Most guys will not want to see this film. "Ahh!," will be their cry, "It's a chick flick!" Yes, if you want to get technical, this is a chick flick. There's more sap contained herein than in the entire Redwood Forest. Even though Terms Of Endearment has many three-hankie moments, it's got a very offbeat sense of humor that men might enjoy...The supporting cast fairs well, lead by Danny DeVito as a pursuing suitor of Aurora's affections and Lisa Hart Carroll as Patsy, Emma's best friend. John Lithgow makes a cameo (of sorts) as Emma's "friend in need," and Jeff Daniels is very charming as Flap, Emma's hanky-panky husband...Successfully fusing elements of comedy, tragedy, and a sideways look at life in one great film is what makes Terms Of Endearment such a marvel. - Patrick Naugle Chicago Sun-Times 9 of 10 [Braveheart] Mel Gibson's "Braveheart" is a fullthroated, red-blooded battle epic about William Wallace, the legendary Scots warrior who led his nation into battle against the English in the years around 1300. It's an ambitious film, big on simple emotions like love, patriotism and treachery, and avoids the travelogue style of so many historical swashbucklers: Its locations look green, wet, vast, muddy and rugged...as "Braveheart", Gibson plays his role with flamboyance, and cuts it with sly humor. He is an amazing battlefield strategist, inventing new strategies and weapons, outsmarting the English at every turn, leading his men into battle with his face painted blue, like a football fan. There is a scene where he is so pumped up with the scent of battle that his nostrils flare; not many actors could get away with that, but Gibson can. - Roger Ebert Variety 9 of 10 [Forrest] A picaresque story of a simpleton's charmed odyssey through 30 years of tumultuous American history, "Forrest Gump" is whimsy with a strong cultural spine. Elegantly made and winningly acted by Tom Hanks in his first outing since his Oscar-winning "Philadelphia" performance...At just short of 2 1/2 hours, pic is a bit indulgent, long and excessive at times, but this is more than compensated for by its humor and sharp-witted storytelling...The film has been very well worked out on all levels, and manages the difficult feat of being an intimate, even delicate tale played with an appealingly light touch against an epic backdrop. - Todd McCarthy Reel.com 10 of 10 [Gladiator] Vast in scope, grand in vision, and rich in story, Gladiator is an epic for the ages. The first Roman-era adventure in 40 years, director Ridley Scott's tale is more than your average sword-and-sandal saga. Brimming with blistering action and breathtaking visuals, the film also marks another tour-de-force performance from Russell Crowe, perfectly showcasing his emotional intensity and immense physicality - after this, Hollywood should be his to conquer...Indeed, watching the burly Kiwi-Aussie get busy in the arena is why most people will buy tickets, and they won't be disappointed: Crowe looks born to wield a sword, and his powerful presence makes Gladiator's combat scenes among the best yet filmed. - Tor Thorsen
