A tour de force of powerful storytelling and intense characterization, "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" is the tale of a tortured man's effort to save a city spiraling into chaos. An aging, time-worn Batman struggles with the acceptance of a new Robin while facing the latest generation of vicious, hyper-violent criminals. Old foes like the Joker and Two-Face add to the maddening mayhem which Batman must face and somehow conquer. Even Batman's relationship with his friend and ally Superman takes a fresh and inventive turn that would have been unthinkable outside of Frank Miller's richly imagined vision of the Dark Knight's future. This tenth anniversary edition features 28 pages of sketches, art, text material and an introduction by the author.

Annotation:
Forced out of a ten-year retirement, Batman makes a valiant comeback in BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. Old enemies re-emerge and former friends become foes, but along with a new Robin, Carrie Kelly, our hero fights them all to prevent Gotham City's further moral decay. Frank Miller, well known for his SIN CITY and DAREDEVIL work as well, effectively infused new life (and increased darkness) into the Batman series with this collection, his efforts inspiring director Tim Burton's movie adaptations.

5 of 5 Holy Grail Tuesday, January 20, 2009
Morgan from Dillon, SC

This is widely considered to be the "holy grail" of Batman stories. After reading it, I can definitely see why. First off, you have to remember this miniseries was published in 1986. So it may not have the same impact as it did back then, especially if you've seen the more recent Batman films. However, it's clear this Batman isn't for kids, and in '86, unheard of. Batman has been gone for 10 years, Gotham City is overrun by mutants, and Bruce Wayne is at home fighting his demons. His obsession once again takes over, and Batman returns to reclaim his city. The Dark Knight Returns is an epic journey. One which takes us from the mind of Bruce Wayne into the black heart of Gotham City. The imagery is astounding. From Batman riding a horse to Batman fighting Superman. It's thought provoking and a true work of art. The Dark Knight Returns should not be missed.

4 of 5 Dark Future and a classic story Thursday, July 26, 2007
A Reader from Inglewood,CA
For a old comic it has withstood the test of time and is obviously rated the best batman book yet. The setting is the distant future and the dark knight went out of retirement to battle street hoodlums and a dark future except for the fact that robin is a chick this whole book is about the classic dark knight riding the white horse to protect his camelot from injustice and strife. If you don't like the drama then you will definitely like how batman and superman fought it out to a standstill at the end with a surprise ending.
