| | | They depended on each other. And the world depended on them. Features: DVD, Widescreen, Dolby Digital (5.1), French, Dubbed, Spanish, Dubbed & Subtitled Based on the bestseller by Stephen E. Ambrose, Band of Brothers tells the story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. Drawn from interviews with survivors of Easy Company, as well as soldiers' journals and letters, Band of Brothers chronicles the experiences of these men who knew extraordinary bravery and extraordinary fear. They were an elite rifle company parachuting into France early on D-Day morning, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and capturing Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. They were also a unit that suffered 150 percent causalities, and whose lives became legend. "Magnificant, awe-inspiring and shatteringly emotional..." TV Guide "extraordinary ... forceful ... stunning ..." The New York Times "... best-ever film depiction of war in the trenches, large screen or small..." Los Angeles Times "**** ... absolutely extraordinary..." USA Today "It is doubtful that any war movie on the large or small screen has captured the varied experiences of ordinary soldiers better..." Barry Garron, The Hollywood Reporter "A triumph on every conceivable level...a brilliant, engrossing, and captivating saga...the new benchmark that all war epics should be judged by." Brian Mckay, eFilmCritic.com "A massively ambitious undertaking...an important record or depiction of courage." Dan Fienberg, Zap2It.com "...an immense achievement, raising the bar for combat realism." John Carman, San Francisco Chronicle "Terrific, wrenching WWII TV-movie telling." Editor's Note
This 10-part HBO television miniseries focuses on Easy Company, a group of American soldiers in World War II, tracking their experiences from the beginning of boot camp to the end of the war. Anchored by actors Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston, the series gives detailed attention to their experiences as a group, as well as the way that each of them develops individually. Based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's book of real-life accounts, BAND OF BROTHERS was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who worked together on SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Hanks also directed one episode, featuring his son, Colin Hanks.

| | Professional Reviews | Entertainment Weekly "...If it doesn't put a lump in your throat, you need to have your throat checked..." 11/08/2002 p.89DVD Verdict 10 of 10 Based on the book by acclaimed historian Stephen Ambrose, Band of Brothers is an intense, moving, astonishing, but above all, honest picture of ordinary men, transformed into elite men of valor, who did what needed to be done to defeat the great evil of their day...As befits the immense collective endeavor that is Band of Brothers, the acting is so natural and uniformly excellent...Few of these men are well known to the public, though you may recognize Ron Livingston (Office Space) and Neal McDonough (Star Trek: First Contact, Minority Report, Boomtown). Nevertheless, two men in particular are worthy of high praise. Donnie Wahlberg (The Sixth Sense, Boomtown) is so intense and focused as Carwood Lipton you can at least forgive his early years in the bubblegum boy-band New Kids on the Block. Likewise, even if you are an inveterate Friends hater, David Schwimmer's perfectly pitched turn as universally despised tyrant Lt. Sobel just may make you forget Friends (and his otherwise mediocre film career)...Exquisite drama and compelling history constructed with masterful writers, producers, and filmmakers, Band of Brothers is worthy of every word of praise it has received to date. Show it to friends and family and teach it in the schools--this is first-class all the way. - Nicholas Sylvain Reel.com 9 of 10 If you came across a single episode of Band of Brothers while channel-surfing, it would be easy to dismiss it as a carbon copy of Saving Private Ryan. From its washed-out cinematography to its intrusively reverent score, the HBO miniseries emulates the 1998 World War II epic in almost every way. And little wonder, since Ryan director Steven Spielberg and star Tom Hanks executive-produced the project, with the latter even directing an episode...However, as a whole, Band of Brothers is a wholly different creature. While Ryan lauded martyrdom in the name of duty, Brothers' central message is about saving the khaki-clad keester of the soldier in the foxhole next door. It's a more humanistic theme, closer to Black Hawk Down in spirit, making the series accessible to those both for and against military intervention...Besides making for solid war drama, the soldiers' rapport with the audience also enhances the action sequences; explosions have a lot greater impact when they're blowing someone you care about to smithereens, and Brothers has more explosions than any other miniseries -- or film -- ever made. From D-Day assaults on German positions to a shattering artillery fusillade during the Battle of the Bulge, the series contains a staggering amount of ultra-violent, ultra-realistic combat. - Tor Thorsen

5 of 5 Outstanding...but why no English subtitles except Thursday, July 09, 2009 A Viewer from Overland Park, KS
Truly outstanding. I don't know how they made everything look so realistic. After watching on TV twice, I had to own it. Disappointed after I got it to find they don't provide English subtitles/captioning. Unfortunate for those with hearing impairment or people who just want to catch all the details. 5 of 5 WOW ... Thursday, December 21, 2006 CB from Miami, Florida
First time I saw it - WOW. Second time I saw it in reruns on HBO - WOW. I own it, and I watch it from time to time - WOW.
The cinematography is grade A. You feel like you are in Europe and the mood is always right. The action sequences get your heart pumping. The look and feel of the scenes really seem authentic.
The acting was great - you really felt for the soldiers. The characters had life and their delivery was superb.
The plot was overwhelming at times. I shed a tear many a time with this series and I am not easy to get to. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 The Best Mini-series ever!!! Wednesday, December 03, 2003 ae86_16v from Oakland, CA
Simply one of the best ever. All the scenes were realistic. It follows very closely to the book. The story is just amazing. The situation these men were put in. . . then to come out of it all. Incredible.
All History students should watch this movie. This should be part of US History class. It is practically done as a documentary. Was this review helpful?

The Band of Brothers series accurately and intelligently captures all the emotions, sights and sounds of war. As much as any TV show can portray what it is like in battle. B of B, displays the horror and tragedy of war, the days and weeks of waiting and just plain being bored, the senselessness of so many casualties, and the valor and courage of the men and women who actually lived it.
A riveting 10 hours+ of the highest quality cinema one will most likely ever see. Was this review helpful?

I love world war two history and this movie is an incredible incite into it. It puts a spin on war movies that no other movie or series has ever done. You really get to know the characters in the series and takes you deep into their experiences. The series was unbelievable, I cannot fathom people having to go through what was depicted in this film. This is one of my favorite movies of all time Was this review helpful?

The Band of Brothers DVD series is an outstanding cinema adventure. I pulls you in from the very first disk and doesn't let go until you've watched every special feature on the last disk. (all of which are really good) My only piece of advice is to make sure you have plenty of time set aside to watch the series. You aren't going to want to stop once you start. Of course, it will make you wonder why it didn't win EVERY Emmy award. Well worth the price, well worth your time, especially Part 6: Bastogne. I wish every history lesson was so enthralling and engaging. Was this review helpful?

This movie goes from boot camp through the end of wwII. I listened to the audio book first and then decided to purchase the DVD set. Other wwII movies I've purchased are Enemy at the Gates, and Search for Private Ryan. I watched the whole 10 hour series in 2 days. Definitely would recommend! Was this review helpful?

How fitting. Ambrose's legecy could not be honored in a more fitting way. I have seen just about every movie about WWII made. Most are, in retrospect, terrible Hollywood trash. I was even let down by "Saving Private Ryan," with its backward-facing beach obstacles, and traditional Hollywood-style ending battle (SS soldiers didn't run in front of open windows with American machine guns sticking out, as if they were in a shooting gallery). After watching the series, "Band of Brothers," I knew I had finally seen WWII done right. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about things World War Two, and could find nothing inaccurate in the series! For a WWII nerd, this is saying a lot. But, beyond the authenticity, I found the intense study of the American character in combat, which marked the career of Ambrose, sobering, human, intense, and entertaining. Throw the rest away, this one is it. Was this review helpful?

I am a 16 year old boy from Indiana, and I avidly watch WW II movies, such as Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates, and so on. When I saw the premier to Band of Brothers, I thought I was in love. It went into so much detail, and you could actually see what the men of the 502nd were going through. This brought a new light to my knowledge of WW II. Thanks HBO! Was this review helpful?

There are no words to express how good this series is other than excellent. It ranks as the best War, Action and Drama movie/show to date. The story is very well written and much detail was taken to show the truth of WWII and what men had to endure both mentally and physically so they could survive and preserve freedom (a mere afterthought for them, I'm sure). It is a good teaching tool for upcoming generations on sacrifice and the hell of war. Those who do fight on our behalf must be honored and respected and this series does that very well. Wow, what can be said about this amazing mini-series. Calling Band of Brothers a mini-series doesn't do this masterpiece justice. 10 very compelling chapters that give us insight into one of the most horrific wars in modern history. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have shown us that hereos aren't Sports Legends or Movie Stars, they are the men and women who made up our armed forces during a time of unbelieveble obstacles and terror. This HBO mini-series is a MUST have for anyone who has a passion for history and love of gritty storytelling. To the men of Easy Company, I tip my hat in honor of those who sacrificed their lives to keep this great country free. Was this review helpful?

I remember watching the premiere on September 9th, 2001 and was amazed at the visuals that this mini-series and HBO were providing. Then 2 days later, we were faced with our own tragic event and ensuing war. That made watching the mini-series even more intense.... more real...
The acting is well done. The cinematography is a must see. Words can barely express what a treasure this collection would be in anyone's DVD library. Was this review helpful?

I am a World War II buff. I own practically every World War II movie made and this series is the best I have ever seen. I have been waiting for HBO to release this movie on to DVD. This series really takes you deep into the minds of the soldiers who fought in WWII and what they endured. I only wish there were more films of this caliber. It is worth every penny.
