3 of 5 need help converting to Microsoft Windows Sunday, October 19, 2008 A Customer from us
I bought this mini laptop early this year and used it not more than 5 times. I tried to convert into Windows. I bought an external CD/DVD drive to do it so but unfortunately, it won't let me do it. Can someone help me to convert from Linux to Windows? Was this review helpful?

What a great mini laptop, very portable and easy internet connectibility. Awesome Desktop software by Xandros. Xandros is a great operating system with everything you need to get the job done anywhere and anytime. So easy to use because of the clear tab labels and icons. This computer was never intended to replace your desktop computer, it's a portable travel warrior for school, vacations or just in your living room while watching sports. I bought 4, one for each of my college bound children and 1 for me! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Very cute Friday, April 04, 2008 SmartDragon from New york
I got this while it was on sale so for me its definitely a good value. Like other reviews it needs some getting used to due to the keyboard and screen size. I was having problems with the "Enter" key since its too small. But I was really pleased with the bootup speed and also the quietness.
Overall, I would recommend this product. But if you have extra moolah I suggest you get the 8G version instead to provide more room for your programs. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Great little tool Friday, April 04, 2008 bigguyinpasadena from Pasadena CA
I am loving this ASUS EEE 4g.It is my first laptop.I avoided buying a laptop because I wanted one that was light enough to travel with and most of the subcompacts are over $1,000.This does everything I need do do for about a third of that.
Add in the solid state drive and it really is a portable-worry free machine.
The only gripe is the screen is VERY small. There will be a larger screen out soon-it will be very welcome. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Eee PC is wonderful Monday, March 31, 2008 J P from Portland Or.
I bought my Eee so that I didn't have to lug my huge laptop around school with all my other books. It's light and just as handy for anything I would need to to there. It also has lot's of handy features like a dictionary and many things your average lap top would. I admit I also like playing their games when I'm bored ( sudoku, solitaire, puzzle games) The only reason I say it isn't perfectly easy is that I am unfamiliar with the system, and the doesn't have the best help files or instructions. I haven't read the manual so I don't know if there is more helpful info there. Anyway, I love my new little computer, and now wonder if my old laptop will get jealous with its sudden lack of use. 5 of 5 asus eee pc 4G Monday, March 31, 2008 Dale from Columbia, MD
This is a extremely compact computer that will fill the need of an ultra light travel computer very well. At only 2 pounds, it is less than half the weight of other laptops at two or three times the price. It comes with a version of linux installed that is easy to use out of the box -- surprisingly so for someone who has not touched a unix based system for more than a decade. The price of $335 with shipping was more than $50 less than any competing original seller. If what you want is a very light computer to do email and casual web browsing, then this is for you. 5 of 5 Great machine Monday, March 31, 2008 A Customer from Chattanooga, TN
I have been looking for a PC that is lightweight and full featured the EeePC 4G is just that. If you are in the need for a travel computer this is the machine for you trust me its great. I do not see any need to replace the OS with another “Xandros” does everything and more (I have installed other OS on the EeePC and all of them needed to be tweaked and still had some issues). It’s a great machine as-is and I am NOT a computer novice I have been using and recommending computers for years. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Wonderful PC Sunday, March 30, 2008 acgary from Bellevue, Washington
Does everything as advertised. Now my favorite; and I have regular Windows, MacBook, and MacAir labtops. I turn to Asus Eee most often to do quick email checks, quick surfs, and light duty at home or travel most of the time now.Check email before I get out of bed? Asus. I even made a complex PopwerPoint presentation using ASUS at a meeting. All built in features are thoughtfully useful. No bloatware. Small size is a great advantage as it is easier to handle outside of "sitting-at-he desk use". My iPhone is great; but ASUS Eee is as good or better in Wifi cases because built-in Skype phone services through the internet works great, Saves loads when I travel internationally. I cannot praise this small machine enough. Buy.com has been 100% reliable for all my purchases. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 very nice little computer Saturday, March 15, 2008 A Customer from San Francisco, AL
Good:
- easy to use, sufficiently fast for intended purpose, decent sound, better than my Sony laptop, good screen resolution
Not so good:
- voice command isn't worthed (a lot easier and faster to click the mouse), quite easy to overwhelm the tiny 1.4 G user disk (I intend to add a large capacity SD card), 512 MB is barely adequate (I intend to upgrade to 1 GB)
Overall, I am quite happy with this toy and I plan to use it as my world travel partner, e-mail, internet, photo storage, blog writing. It is always amusing to see other people expression when they see this gadget at the airport TSA line or at the net cafe. hehe Was this review helpful?

I got this for 350.00 with free shipping by signing up for a Revolution card... That is hard to beat! I am loving it. I loaded Windows XP so I can actually use it. It plays games better than I expected. The key board keys are a little cheapish, but work fine. I like the scroll pad, it works nicely. Very cool item. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Very good mobile laptop Saturday, February 23, 2008 A Customer from NJ
I am a college student, so I bought this laptop to carry around campus. It is so light, that I can carry it around all day without any problems. The battery life is really good, and it is very easy to use. The only upgrade I would reccommend is 256-512 more ram because the laptop does hang occasionally. When I first got the laptop, you feel a lot of heat dissapiated through the keyboard(you get used to the small keyboard), but you get used to it(I have never heard the fan turn on, it's a very quiet laptop). Overall, exellent laptop for the money. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 SUPER portable for common school work Tuesday, February 19, 2008 A Customer from Providence, RI
i'm a college student and i attend classes where i need to take alot of notes.
this little laptop is SO portable that i want to carry it everywhere. it's good for basic typing up essays, surfing the net, chatting with friends, and occasionally i play old games like GTA3, Half Life, and more.
the only thing that bugs me is the short battery life, but most of my classes are not longer than the battery life (3.5 hours). i always carry the power cable so that's not a problem though.
overall its SUPER cute and sleek.
i have windows xp installed with enough space left for thousands of essays.
i also use it to watch movies off my USB memory stick because the harddrive size is only 4 gb. i hope to upgrade this someday. Was this review helpful?

This laptop is amazingly easy to use straight from the box. Linux works perfectly and there was absolutely no learning curve. Of course my kids want to install XP as soon as they can, but I felt the Linux works well and has everything you would normally need. So small and does so much for such a great price. What a fantastic laptop. Only about 2 lbs. so easy to travel with. I already made a phone call using the built-in video cam. Also it was so easy to connect with both a wired router and a wireless router. It works like a charm. I highly recommend this laptop. Was this review helpful?

I have another laptop with a 17 inch screen, but i wanted something a little bit more portable. This is just what i needed! it is great for taking on plane, taking to class to type, and just surfing the web. Some people have complained about the battery life, but this battery seems to last longer than my other laptop. I am typing on it right now with no problems. However, i do not recommend getting this to word process if you have big hands. I LOVE this little computer and everyone that looks at it seems to as well! Was this review helpful?

Make no mistake, you can't run efficiently windows applications on it even if you install some bootleged windows XP.
The keyboard is tiny, the screen the same.
Most of the apps would ask you to pony up some money to get the 'premium' features.
To make it usefull you would have to spend hundreds of $$$.
Don't waste your money, go for a real laptop running Windows! Was this review helpful?

Even though Asus Eee 2G, 4G, 2G Surf, 4G Surf are advertised as having a 56k modem (at the online sites that sell it), my pearl Eee 4G arrived today without a modem. Yes, it has the phone jack, but the modem is missing. After checking two forums (and running diagnostics), apparently this is the status quo. This was a frustrating loss of an afternoon. Just thought I would give other buyers a heads up. Also, it appears that I will not be able to upgrade the disk storage in the future, because many of these machines which have a serial number that starts with the letter B (as opposed to A), shipped without a 2nd PCI express mini card expansion connector. The only way to verify this is to open the machine and void the warranty. Was this review helpful?

I first saw this computer, in all magazines, the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine. I thought it would be a fantastic ultraportable to take with me on trips. I normally use a Mac at home, and a Dell at work - but I have absolutely no issues with the Linux operating system. It does what it needs to do - surfs the web, sends and receives email, plays my music and my movies off of my thumbdrive. I know that there are other ultraportables that use Windows and have a larger harddrive, but you're looking at costs way more than this little guy. Overall, very satisfied with the Asus. I bought this PC for my tech-challenged wife, and I am more than happy. From a user friendliness pov it would be difficult to get an easier to use PC (my first time with Linux, no learning curve compared to Windows), the screens and big-button icons make it simple for the most neophyte user. The small screen takes a bit of getting used to, but generally web pages are formatted to read without much if any horizontal scrolling. The keyboard is more than adequate , imho, so for e-mail and simple tasks it is perfect, the small size make it so easy to carry I was almost tempted to bring with me on my current business trip instead of my 6 lb HP. I highly recommend this product. Was this review helpful?
3 of 4 customers found this review helpful. 2 of 5 Has some problems... Friday, November 30, 2007 Gary from Denver, CO
Love the size - very satisfied with files transferability between Asus and Dos systems. Complaint with keyboard: Right shift key is offset one key too far to facilitate up-down-right-left arrow keys. I use this for writing while flying cross the country, and this is a very aggravating point! Crashes on JPEG zooms beyond 90%. Printer: I downloaded driver for my HP Laserjet 1018, but it refuses to make the handshake and I can't get it to work (Arrrgggghhh!). So, that's an honest review of my experience with the Asus - if they made the printer drivers work flawlessly (plug and play would be preferable), and it's system didn't crash while blowing up pics, and the right shift key was built where it ergonomically belongs, this thing would make a fortune. Take that for what its worth... Was this review helpful?

Being a Window$ fan and not having much experience with Linux, I was a little skeptical on how user friendly the interface would be on this laptop. Boy was I impressed with how simple everything is laid out on this machine! I bought this laptop for my wife for Christmas but gave it to her early. She is not real computer literate and this laptop definate was exactly what she needed. It performs all functions that she needed, such as internet, word processing, and video streaming with perfection. She is so pleased with it's ease of use right out of the box. And, did I mention the WiFi use is magnificient! It picks up our wireless connection better than our other laptop that cost 3 times as much!! I would HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone wanting a very compact and portable laptop that just does ALL basic functions really well. Of course this is not a replacement for your main computer, but it will suprise you with what it can do for the price and size. I'm thinking about picking up another real soon. This does everything I expected it to. Any similarly capable laptop has always been over $1000. I had my hopes pinned on the Palm Foleo that never materialized. The Eee PC is really better. At two pounds, quick booting, with easy built-in wifi, its a great tool. The keyboard could be a little more tactile, but there's only so much you can do with the physics when size and price are dictated. Don't worry about it being Linux. Its a simple appliance that you'll feel right at home on the web with. Was this review helpful?
1 of 2 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Handy little device Friday, November 30, 2007 A Customer from Tucson, AZ
While it doesn't take the place of a bona-fide laptop, the ASUS Eee is a handy way to connect to the internet, get or send email, or make Skype calls while on the go. The keyboard is just a little too tiny for serious word processing but it works in a pinch. Limited (but expandable with SD cards) storage limits use. Small screen may be a factor for some, especially as some websites don't fit well on screen. It would be an even better device if the battery life was better as most people would want to be using it without a power adapter most of the time. The OS is pretty intuitive. Not much eye-candy though (Mac users will be disappointed). Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Very good product Friday, November 30, 2007 A Customer from New Jersey

Pros
Small, Lightweight
Customize or change OS
Adequate Hardware
Reasonable Price
Cons
Screen could be larger (space wasted)
Does not allow for easy install of xp without external drive (probably Microsoft's fault)
Price (although still cheap) considerably more than initially priced .
Overall
This is a great second computer that I know is going to be a hit. I go to college and this is a great notebook to bring to class to take notes or surf the web. If you bring this baby to class, be ready for people to comment and want to play with it. I definitely recommend this product to anyone who needs a portable, cheap, and secondary computer. Now if Asus would just come out with the 8.9 inch model..... Was this review helpful?

This is a wonderful little laptop. It's got something for everybody: easy to understand for kids, old folks, and tough enough if you want to go deeper. I'm thrilled with it, and with the price point. And, as usual, I got great service from Buy.com. Was this review helpful?

It looks like eee PC is hot and very hot! ASUS is going to make a lots of money. They will make a good product margin and no doubt about that ( since they tell others to sell it for $199, and they did good bargain for parts' manufacturers).
Can they sell 3 to 6 millions next year? I really uncertain about that.
1) For kids? No, that will hurt their eye. Kids don't travel much.
2) Cheap? You can get a real PC for that price. Nowadays, people need space for mp3 and avi video files.
3) Wireless is good, but most times, we have a good pc around when wireless is available.
4) I have too many notebooks and still want a EEE PC as a toy, but I have to waite they drop the price. If price is not go down, I may buy the second generation eee pc for better battery life ( no HD and 7" LCD with 5400mA battery for only 3.5 hrs? I don't know why?).

I was able to install Windows XP and I am pretty happy with the overall performance of the eee PC. But I don’t think it can be used as everyday laptop because it has a very small keyboard and display. Everyone advertised this unit has a built-in 56K modem but mine came with the modem slot totally blocked with the rubber in it and Windows did not recognize a modem. So I am out of luck if I am at the place where no wireless/LAN is available. Also after Windows XP and service pack installed I have no space left in the SSD so I am force to use SD expansion. Maybe 8GB SSD and 10” display model will be a better choice. Was this review helpful?
