I have been using my asus eee 4G over a year now, never had issues with it. Its processing is great even though its running ubuntu. I added another 16GB of SD card, I would say that makes it a complete portable laptop. Its great accessory on trips.

Bought this computer for the company. We need to run an extremely small program which unfortunately needs Windows so we bought this ASUS. The machine only comes with Linux OS and 2 discs. One is the recovery disc which allows you to bring the ASUS to the factory specs and the second disc only contains the Widows drivers which will bring all the components to life. Basically you need an UNREGISTERED Windows disk (or a separate license) to install and run Windows on this. Performance reminds me of the beginning of Laptops computers when HD's at 1-2 gig were a novelty. The screen's resolution is 640 X 440 or enhanced to 640 x 480 after you install the additional drivers. Wi-Fi works good. Overall, is a good portable communication device if you do not have high expectations and for small applications will do the job.

Perfect for travel, very easy to use. The keyboard takes some getting used to and external storage is clearly necessary, but overall a good machine.

I love this thing. It's small enough I can take it anywhere, and it does everything I need it to do, it boots up fast (esp. compared to Windows!), and it never crashes. So glad I took a chance and bought it!

This small computer has replaced my standard laptop, due to its true portability and versatility. I have kept its original OS, but have updated it so that it uses standard Xandros instead of the the easy Xandros. There are so much support for this little guy, that I will doubt that you will have any issues in finding what you need. One place that I have used often is http://forum.eeeuser.com/. They have helped me resolve any questions that I have had. I in turn have help others. The only issue that I have had, is due to its miniture size, I often have to scroll more, but that is all! I enjoy my Eeepc and have no regret in its purchase! SUPERB Asus!

I had some problems with the wifi but that has been solved. Linux is good, I hope to switch over to xp soon. The product I have is the 4g non surf model, I love this little unit. I have no major problems after getting the wifi fixed and running. I think if your looking for a gaming rig your going to disappointed if it its to surf and do email and light stuff your going to be very happy.

This is no exception! When I first booted the Eeepc, the default OS that was installed looked so nice that it looked as though it was made for a child, hence, it was very easy to get use to and little learning curve. I say little, as I don't know if everyone is computer literate. If you are computer illiterate, this is were the little comes in. It was too simple to use, so I decided to do what most fans of the Eeepc have done, I installed XP... it worked out fine, but running at a higher resolution (800X600) makes the fonts a bit to small for legibility. And, you will need to run it at this resolution for the windows to fit nicely without having to scroll horizontally and vertically all the time. So instead, I uninstalled XP and installed Ubuntu 7.10, again, no issues, except with the resolution again! So, I decided to go back to stock and reinstalled Xandos, which has worked perfectly! <br /><br /> I read my email, relax a bit by playing the games, and best of all my wife and three your old daughter enjoy it the most, by using paint for kids! They enjoyed the application so much, that it became a tutorial for having our daughter learn to use a computer. She now knows how to click with the mouse, start the application, clear the screen, choose colors and scroll with the middle button of the mouse, and because there are pictures, she is learning by association. We have decided to make this computer our daughter's first PC! BUT, I do barrow it on occasions to check email and surf the net! ;) My wife is now requesting one of her own! Well, her birthday is coming up. :) <br /><br /> Would I advice anyone else to purchase this device, of course, but I would advice them that the screen is in the small factor side and if leaving the default OS, you will more than likely be a bit disappointed. <br /><br /> Excellent work Asus and Xandros!

Are you afraid of Linux? Don't be as this little pc not only does Linux well and error free, its ready out the box for nearly everything you would want to throw at it, all without even knowing anything about Linux via its easy to use tabular user interface. This is a great first PC and will meet the needs of many non-tech/non-geeks who just need something to surf, email, and play. It’s a niche box, not a gamer’s toy. The eeePC is for children or adults on the go. It can withstand bumps, bruises and the occasional drop that would normally 'kill' the vast majority of other ultra portables, notebooks, and laptops. Preloaded with enough Linux GUI and applications to meet with any productivity demand. The eeePC has enough 'Horse Power' for the Linux Guru and Application Developer on the go. You can load in an entire development toolkit and code on the go. If you a "Windows" nut this small PC has enough processing power to run either XP or Vista, and many have done it, which is a segway to the next paragraph. Support for this product is outstanding, and I am not referring to Asus tech support, I am referring to the online network of discussion boards, guides, and a wiki that are totally devoted to the eee user. There are those who have installed their own Internal 3g modems and many other mod's. Then there are those who have a yen for the software and load Mac Os X.5, or various other forms of Linux, Windows, etc. You can use it with its default gui that gives the ease of operation of a bread toaster, or you could switch to an advanced desktop mode [I use KDE] which gives a little more ability, or you can customized with your desktop ui, or OS. I love mine and I carry it nearly everywhere. Its radio package exceeds that of nearly every other laptop I have encountered. It picks up what other laptops cannot see, and at 802.11g speeds.

...got it yesterday...stayed up most of the night playing with it. I'm now thinking of things to give it for its birthday (those beautiful leather cover things, probably). It just does what it's supposed to do so nicely. I was prepared to find the Linux distribution facile and inadequate...it's not...very intuitive. I had read about the wireless connections going haywire...no worries, just delete and re-add. The keyboard is small, but not deal-breakingly so. I love it to the point that, when I saw that video on SomethingTube of somebody dropping an EEE PC from various heights to test durability, I just couldn't watch. Only two things could make my 4GB screamer any better: ship it with the wired connection disabled because you know most people are going to use wireless anyway and make it so I can upgrade the hard drive myself without too much squawking. But even without either of these...it's perfect.

This is a fabulous little laptop. To those who say "for only a few bucks more you could have a full featured laptop" are missing the point. the EeePC is a laptop I can throw in my backpack *while* it's already packed, and my wife can throw in her purse. It's like carrying around a book. The wifi reception is outstanding too. I can get a strong signal in some areas of the house where other systems can't get any signal. I added a bluetooth dongle and can use my cell phone for a net connection when wifi isn't available. You can't beat this kind of portability for the price.

This is the best computer I have used yet! I have used several desktops and laptops that were bigger and supposedly better, but this little laptop puts them to shame. The Open Office suite is easy to use and works great. The PIM software is easier to use then my old Ascend program. Overall I am pleased with this product and would recommend this to anyone seeking a small ultralight computer for work or play.

I am not new to Linux. But the way this PC has been setup and the integration with networks, printers and external devices was nothing less then astonish. I made a mistake to bring it with me at work, and spend most of the day explaining what it is, where can be bought and etc. Generally, it is very nice, the apps are running fast enough, for few $$$ you can upgrade the drive and the RAM. The cons are: 1. Screen -> must be at least 9". 2. No PCMIA slot so I can plug my GPRS card and use the 3G internet. 3. No build in bluetooth. You can plug the USB one, but it is ugly. And you need the bluetooth in order to connect to internet via cell phone.

Keyboard took a little bit of getting used to. Otherwise it's a solid machine that meets 99% of my everyday needs. I did install a different OS -- EeeXubuntu -- so I have more flexibility. Add in a RAM upgrade (to 1G) and put in a 4G SD card, I easily doubled the memory & storage capacities. This is one perfect machine for the road warrior.

Nice gadget and worth the money. Pros: Size, speed, durability, usability, convenience factor, cuteness quotient (it attracts attention). Cons: Battery life (it’s never as long as they say); small keyboard. This product is pretty much as good as advertised. It makes it easy to carry a laptop everyday. This machine’s wi-fi capabilities outperform my Toshiba Satellite.

Love my eee. Use it mostly for work and video watching. Liked Linux but had to convert to XP to make it usable for work as well. This was very easy with some of the instructions on the web. I'm often places where I can use a laptop and this is so much better for travel than my standard size laptop. But size can be a limitation so know what you are getting into. The keyboard is small but you can get used to it.

Excellent price point; usually the smaller units are the most expensive. Great to be in a Linux OS. Fast (quiet, without usual Windows music) boot, 512RAM is fine, recognizes my SDHC card, easy download from external Lacie USB Hard drive, great sound with or without speakers, great battery life of 2.5+ hours (surfing web @ brightest screen), keyboard is fine for me. No problem streaming movies from archive.org I have replaced my desktops with IBM Thinkpads X Series (pre 2005). I thought those were the most reliable notebooks and they are. However, the eee pc can fit in my purse. I hope it proves to be equal to IBM quality. Great job Asus!!

When you have this laptop, more people will ask you where you bought it more than any purchase you make. I needed a compact solution for doing email and surfing the web, and this fills the bill. I tried the built-in Linux operating system, but ended up installing WinXP. I wanted to be able to use Remote Desktop and log in to my NAS with a more familiar interface. Thanks to ASUS for providing all the drivers needed and a how-to in the manual.

Great little computer for travel. After reducing XP Pro with software and loading it,upgrading to 1gb mem,and adding a 16gb SDHC card for a secondary drive, It is sweet.

Screen size/resolution: Too small for regular browsing and working. Processor speed: Mediocre. Storage: Good. Solid-state space is plenty for base OS, especially if you don't care for Windows. (I don't.) SD slot and three USB ports for additional devices -- very nice. Reliability: Poor. Died after a couple of days. I haven't read too many other stories of similar problems, so chalk it up to (bad) luck. Buy.com and its shippers have combined to make the return process a nightmare. A month after I sent it back, I am scheduled to have the replacement. That's unacceptable -- and the reason for the overall satisfaction value of 2. (I'd make it a 1, but it's not all ASUS' fault, is it?)

Purchased 2 of them for teen girls christmas gift. What a hit! No luck on my end trying to get printer drivers installed for a common HP laser but what the hay. A perfect appliance for what it is intended to do. Kudos to Buy.com on return service one of them turned goofy and the return process was great.

Ok, so I bought this little computer after reading every review I could find. I was looking for something that would serve the exact purpose this computer was made for. I have only had it a couple of weeks now and so far so good. The pros of this product are the size, weight, and ease of use, however I have a few cons as well. My cons for this computer are: (1.) The size of the hardrive - It states it is 4gb, but after they install their basic software it only leaves you with about 1gb (2.) The screen size - The whole idea of this computer is to be able to use it for internet surfing around the house and in WiFi hotspots withought having to lug around a large laptop, but it is very dificult to view anything on its 7" screen after your toolbars take up about an inch of that! You have to constantly scroll up and down and left and right to see or read a page. If you enjoy wathching youtube videos or anything like that this is not the computer to buy! (3.) Charging - I a also had a problem with the battery being plugged in and not charging, but that has only happened once so I am not sure if that was computer error or operator error at this point. (4.) Price - Alot of the reviews talk about how great of a price ($399)this computer is for what you get, but if you ask me it is overpriced! You could spend $100 more and get a much more well equiped laptop.

I bought this for my (non-technical) wife for Christmas. It was a slam dunk! We basically have used it for web surfing and Skype -- it does this well. The small size is perfect, it fits in her purse. The keyboard is easier to use than I thought (it is still small, of course); I am not sure how durable it will be over time. The user interface is quite easy to use -- a pleasant surprise. (We are using the default Linux Xandros installed out of the box -- we haven't tried to run Windows on it; the documentation says we can, but I am a little sceptical.) The best thing about it: it boots up and connects to our encrypted wireless network in 10 seconds! (This wasn't one of my criteria for purchase, but, in practice, this turns out to be a huge selling point for us.) Battery power is not great, about 3 hours. As a first generation product, I am a little worried about how long this will last, or I would immediately buy another one (I'll probably wait until the spring). This is an awesome buy at this price.

Pros: Small, light, durable (no moving parts), relatively inexpensive, full computer funcionality in a small case, runs Linux, very easy to use (no manual required, although one is provided), can be altered for use by power users Cons: Screen is a bit small - would have been nice if it had filled the whole panel, battery life should have been better considering the computer's size (it gets 3.5 hours or so), keyboard is cramped but useable (this is forgiven since it uses the full device width unlike the screen) The Eee PC may have modest specs, but everything runs plenty fast on it. If you have tried running Vista on lower end laptops, the Eee will outperform them. The built-in OS is very nicely set up for people who want a computer that just works and will let them communicate online and use an office suite. For those who want the power of a full computer, there is work being done to make Ubuntu and other mainstream Linux distributions work perfectly with the Eee. I'm writing this review on an Eee running Xubuntu, and it does everything I need it to do. Also: Insert an SD or SDHC card in the built-in reader for more disk space. With an 8GB card you get a total of 12GB of storage. You can also replace the built-in RAM stick with another up to 2GB (although this is unnecessary for the built-in operating system, it can be useful if you want to install a different OS like Ubuntu or, heaven forbid, Windows) To conclude: For computer users that want a small portable device which just works, an out-of-box Eee is great. For power users who enjoy fiddling with their machines, easily install Ubuntu or some other Linux distro to have a fully-functional laptop computer.

I spent some time researching before I made the plunge. I originally was considering an internet tablet. Trying to decide on an older model for less money or newer for the added features. But what it came down to was did I really want to use a stylus and no keyboard. Did I want to surf the internet and check or compose email or watch videos on a 4 inch screen. Then Asus released the eeepc and that made my mind up for me. The cost wasn't much more than the tablet was. Then there is a keyboard, 3 usb ports, external monitor option, built in ethernet ,wireless b and g, headphone and microphone jack, secure digital for storage. The power adapter is made like one for a cellphone, so no large brick to lug around. The battery life isn't bad either. Now to the operating system. Originally I had planned to change to Windows XP instead of the flavor of Linux that came installed on it. But at this time I can't really justify that since Asus did such a great job on the user interface included on the eeepc. I can't imagine a novice pc user that would not able to learn how to use this laptop. It's that simple. I've dabbled in Linux, but by no means am I an expert. The boot time and shut down time is so much faster than on any of my Windows machines. Don't get me wrong I am an avid Windows user, but this laptop just works.

I intended on running the installed Linux on the machine, but the driver didn't support WPA encryption, so that would have been a deal breaker... but I ended up installing Windows XP SP2, and it works very well. It goes on easily and I haven't had any issues with any of the hardware. Skype works AWESOME with it--the built in camera is surprisingly good too. The screen is a bit small, but it is so portable I'll cut it some slack. I put in a 16GB SDHC card, and storage is no longer an issue. If you want an ultra-portable and you don't want to spend a fortune, this is probably your best option.

This is an incredible device for anyone who needs an ultraportable. It comes with everything, has a beautiful display, starts up quick. And it works! It's not a desktop replacement, or a replacement for a full-fledged laptop (like my Dell 17"er). But what it is is fantastic for web, e-mail and Office applications on-the-go. And no Windows! The price makes it a real no-brainer. I work out of my car and this is just perfect!

Better than I expected, this thing feels like a mini laptop, though is powerful enough to run even serious programs like Photoshop and some games. This thing plays all kinds of movies and with all codecs out of the box. Makes a perfect xmas gift too.

I read about the EEE PC and was immediately intrigued. Most "subnotebooks" are in the $1,000+ range. This thing is a fantastic portable internet device. Comes with 4gb solid state drive so theres almost no risk of destroying your computer if you bump it against something.The boot time is faster than any computer i've ever owned because there are no spinning parts. It comes with a linux distro which is perfect for newbies to computers but can be made into a great distro for advanced users. I installed windows immediately and it runs fantastic. The CPU is slow, so don't expect to encode video on it, but it plays youtube clips, some older games (mostly pre 2002), surfs the web, allows you to write papers, etc. The keyboard is a little hard to type on at first, but its easy to get used to. I've heard as little as 10 minutes, but it took me about 2 days (3 or 4 hours of use total) to get used to it. Its easy to expand the memory in this thing; I bought 2GB of ram to replace the 512MB of ram for 50 bucks. It was as easy as unscrewing a little plate, pulling the one stick out, and pushing the new one in, and there's video tutorials on youtube. An 8gb SD card for another 50 gives this guy 12GB space total. It takes SDHC cards, so thats a great way to expand the storage space. Overall, this product is amazing. It fits into a purse like a charm (had a friend test it). It also fits into the side pocket of my cargo pants. great. Comes with a little sleeve for holding it.

This little laptop is so much fun! There are a multitude of sites to upgrade and modify this laptop. I am so happy with this purchace. The only thing that was disapointing was the modem (or lack there of). This PC did not include a phone modem, and the PCI-e slot is also non existant.. But all my mods are straight to the circut board, and I have no plans to use a phone line, so all is right with the world!

Size doesn't matter. Able to run Linux (standard) or Windows XP (must install yourself), this is a bona-fide laptop. Keys are a little bigger than those found on the standard cell phone, but overall this pc is large. No application bloat found on other new pc's. Even comes with a webcam. Turned the pc on, after charging initially, and was up and running in under a minute. Try that on a Windows-based PC. When I was done, shut down took 10 seconds. Fantastic. If you are not looking for a power pc, this little guy is worth the price.

After a week of using the little guy, it's hit the nail on the head. We were looking for something very portable, but complete. Specifically we wanted something we could surf the web on and check and write email -- in a super light format. The keyboard is cramped and the screen is small -- but neither insurmountable. Pluses: form factor -- perfect weight -- fantastic price -- perfect speed -- excellent boot up and shut off time programs -- complete and quick battery life -- great, 3+ hours support community -- eeeuser.com (excellent) cool factor -- wow! Minuses: does get hot bottom half is so light, upper half can toggle back easily Linux is a new world for us -- tricky

This is my first laptop. I was holding out for a Mac but then this little affordable guy came out and met my needs for a computer away from home. I was really concerned about the keyboard size for my man hands and the size is perfect. Going to eeeuser.com and getting tips on maximizing my screen real estate was really helpful. I also converted the Easy Mode to Full Desktop (KDE) to all me to more freedom to customize. So far I'm really happy and I'm sure as the open source community develops better software packages and customized features, I'll love it even more.

This little baby is a dream come true for me. I have an old Sony picturebook C1VPK with a crusoe 667mhz processor and a 8.9 inch screen. This guy runs rings around it. I am amazed at how quick the eee is. I had Firefox, a text editor, and a music player playing music and I noticed no system slow downs. The 7 inch screen is small but it is very clear and easy to read. With the software repositories from Xandros there is a ton of software available for the eee. I love linux and use it everyday but the thing I am most impressed with the eee is the fact that everything just works! the wireless, the webcam. the sound. Everything worked just like it is supposed to. If you are in the market for a tiny laptop then you can't lose with this one. I have had the Sony picturebook for 6 years and haven't been able to give it up until now.

The laptop very useful if you configure your own OS to unlock the full desktop mode. Easy mode limits the computer's abilities such as making your own wallpaper and other thing. Overall I get a lot of eye poppers when im at the library because this laptoop is so tiny.. The screen is alright but I think the speakers should be on the bottom of the laptop so the screen would be 9inch which would be fine. Other thoughts, I bought a 8gb sdhc to expand the memory and it was only 30 bucks for a class 6 speed sd card. Price, weight, looks, performance is very good. I configured my pc to never boot to easy mode so it can load faster because it used to boot from easy to full mode which took 45 secs.. This computer is really easy to configure if you know what you're doing.

When I first opened the box and looked at the small screen, I wasn't sure I would keep it. But then, I turned it on. Joila! It loaded quickly and with a couple of clicks, it was on the internet! The webcam also worked out of the box. The display is great. I updated the bios and the webcam quit working. No problem, just did as another customer suggested. Rebooted, went into bios, and enabled the webcam. Simple and easy and fast. Took some getting used to small display with my 65-year-old eyesight. No problem. Everything I need to work the internet is right there, already installed, including an antivirus program. Never used Linux before but again, no problem. The more I use this notebook, the more I like it. And the best part is, it fits very easily into my favorite handbag which is not very large at all. I carry my EeePC, digital cam, cell phone, and all of my usual doo-dads in my handbag and no noticeable extra weight. I have a cable modem and router to connect my wireless home network. This little bugger connected immediately. All I had to do was enter my network security code once. Now each time I turn on the EeePC, it automatically connects to my home network and the internet...and does it even easier and faster than my $3,000 VAIO notebook. I can see where it will be a definite pleasure to take this along on my road trips without toting a large notebook case which is a lot heavier. I also bought an 8GB SDHC card and a 120GB 2.5-inch external hard drive to use with this notebook. I like to use my digital camera a lot and often and this notebook is a definite asset in that regard. I don't think I'll care to install Windows on it. The Linux works great. And 4GB isn't really that bad. My very first notebook had a whopping 4GB on its hard drive. My latest notebook has 200GB but the EeePC is the one that will accompany me on road trips. When I placed the order, this item was on backorder. However, my timing was precision timing. Buy.com was able to ship it out to me the very next day and I received it in just a few days...weeks earlier than I expected to get it. Thank you, Buy.com, for your excellent service.

(woohoo...internet anywhere!!), 3) great portable size, 4) reasonable price, 5) Linux folks: apt-get works, 6) Xandros does a good job with its networking setup.</p> <p><b>Cons:</b> 1) Keyboard is small, so chubby-fingered people will have to hunt and peck, 2) Linux folks: Not all of the Xandros repository items are available.</p> Definitely glad I bought one.

I was looking for a small take-along computer and have compared all of the UMPCs and their high prices - and small screens. Then I came across the EeePC. It looked like it might be what I was looking for, and the price was right so I ordered it. Buy.com had it to me right on time; when I opened the box I was amazed at the compact size and light weight of the unit. I played around with the pre-installed operating system and applications for about an hour, then installed Windows XP . XP runs great on this system, I replaced the installed 512MB RAM with 1GB and it performs very respectfully. I am using my AT&T Mobile Broadband USB device and it works like a charm. You will quickly use up the 4 B of storage, so plan on buying a large SD card or USB thumbdrive. The keyboard is small and compact but is a pleasure to use compared to thumbing on the iPhone or any other PDA/SmartPhone. Used for Surfing the web, checking email on the go. Taking notes in meetings. PROS: Small Size, Light weight, Good performance, Connectivity - WiFi and ethernet perform well, I can touch type on it. CONS: Screen resolution is too low - a lot of scrolling and panning is required, Connectivity - No Built-in Bluetooth, 4GB is not enough built in storage.

The advantage and dis-advantage of this computer is that it's small, really small. At just over 2 lb. and about the size of a trade paperback you can lug it around all day in a briefcase or purse and not feel it. It features a real keyboard, which is cramped for extended typing, although I can touch-type slowly on it. The action of the keys reminds me of an IBM ThinkPad, responsive but not squishy. The screen also displays about a third of a typed page, which is adequate to writing academic papers and correcting them in the field. At 800 x 480 resolution, most web pages are a little awkward. If I hadn't needed a laptop badly, I would have waited for the 10" screen model that Asus will roll out in May 2008. However, the performance is really good, with good wireless connectivity and built-in camera/speakers. The Web and OpenOffice suite are snappy. The machine boots in half the time of my WindowsXP desktop machine, and it shuts down fully in just under ten seconds. The 3-4 hours of battery life certainly isn't worse than most machines. The OS is rock-solid, although the Linux distribution makes installing new software a little bit of a trick - about like Windows. The storage is meager, but the MMC-SD slot and three USB slots can rectify that. I keep all my critical files on a 2GB flash drive and just edit them from the flash drive, which facilitates interchange between machines. Bottom line: if you need to have a desktop replacement with its DVD, then get an iMac. I would take a 10" eee PC over an iMac anyway.

I'm a long-time geek, and have owned or used over a dozen laptops. The Asus Eee PC is THE single most amazing piece of technology I have ever seen. It is worth every penny of the $399. PROS 1. Excellent build quality. Right up there with a ThinkPad 2. Beautiful screen. Small, but eminently useable 3. Full set of basic applications needed for business or basic use 4. Incredibly light and small. 5. Great wireless strength. Better than either of my ful-size Toshibas 6. Good performer. Performs better a 1.5 GHz Celeron would running XP CONS 1. Limited software. Xandors' repositories for the Asus are extremely limited. Adding standard Deb repositories breaks Synaptic. WIll be fixed, but right now, software is limited. 2. Standard desktop (KDE) mode takes some work to get to. Overall this thing is astounding. I simply cannot overstate how impressed I am with this thing.
