 Editor's Note
Bringing back the entire ensemble from the original hit comedy, AMERICAN PIE 2 finds Jim (Jason Biggs), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Oz (Chris Klein), and Stifler (Seann William Scott) reunited for the summer after their first year at college. When the boys rent a beach house, even more familiar faces--such as Vicky (Tara Reid), Jessica (Natasha Lyonne), and the Sherminator (Chris Owen)--begin to appear. Soon Jim discovers that the gorgeous exchange student Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) will be making a romantic visit, and, in a panic, he heads for band camp to seek sex advice from the flute-playing Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). A worthy follow-up to AMERICAN PIE, this outrageous and entertaining sequel flaunts even more absurd antics and unlikely couplings. Erotic attempts continue to go awry, and musical instruments still find their way into the most inappropriate places. And once again, Eugene Levy brings down the house as Jim's nerdy yet understanding father. Fans of the first film will not be disappointed.

| | Professional Reviews | New York Times "...Both lewd and sweet, exploring the natural prurience of young people while implicitly comforting their raging anxieties..." 08/10/2001 p.E11Entertainment Weekly "...A surprisingly poignant postadolescent coup..." 01/11/2002 p.54 The New York Times 7 of 10 The American Pie movies succeed where many other comedies aimed at the youth market falter: they manage to be both lewd and sweet, exploiting the natural prurience of young people while implicitly comforting their raging anxieties... - A.O. Scott Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10 This may seem crushingly obvious, but here goes: The problem with a sequel like "American Pie 2" is that it's about the same characters, and the elements of surprise and discovery are gone. In the first movie, Stifler's mom appeared unexpectedly like a gift from above. In this movie, she has become a standing joke (except to Stifler). In the first movie, Jim didn't know that he and Nadia were making love in streaming video on the Internet. In this one, there's a sequence where strangers pick up a sex scene on their CB radios, and we're thinking: this year's version of Internet broadcast...That said, I had a good time at "American Pie 2," maybe because the characters are broad comic types, well played; the movie feels some sympathy for their dilemmas, and because it's obsessed with sex...One nice thing about the movie is that the girls are portrayed as equal opportunity predators, and not simply as objectified sex objects...I laughed at "American Pie 2," yes, but this is either going to be the last "Pie" movie or they're going to have to get a new angle. I'd hate to see the freshness of the series grind down into the repetition of the same formula to wring a few more dollars out of the brand name. One hopeful sign that the filmmakers can learn and grow is that the sequel does not contain a single pie, if you know what I mean. - Roger Ebert ReelViews 6 of 10 In the case of American Pie, more is less. As in less funny, less sexy, and much, much less enjoyable. This sequel, like so many that have preceded it this year, exists exclusively because its forerunner made a lot of money - and the lack of inspiration behind the movie shows in every frame. Desperation permeates the production - a desperation to match the outrageousness, hilarity, and vulgarity of the first American Pie. Only in the third category does it come close. Everything about this picture is flat - the performances, the direction, the screenplay, the "comic" sequences, and the energy level. Yet, as big a dud as the movie is, it will doubtlessly be a huge hit, because the movie-going public no longer seems to care about film quality, as long as they see a few familiar faces. Two years from now, we'll probably be watching American Pie 3...Although the movies are entirely different, watching American Pie 2 offers a similar experience to that of sitting through Scary Movie 2. You can see all the seams in the movie, and sense how frantic the filmmakers were to replicate their previous success. But, when a motion picture is the result of a financial impulse, not a creative one, this is often the unfortunate result. - James Berardinelli

***The Movie*** I honestly didn't think much of the first American Pie, so I was pleasantly surprised by this sequel. The sequel follows the same cast thru the summer after their first year of college. While the first movie was almost strictly a run of the mill high school teen movie, filled with rather predictable situations, the sequel has what I felt was a broader appeal. Pie 2 doesn't rely on the old school college/teen comedy formula that we've all seen before. It's surprisingly refreshing & creative, while still keeping the irreverent spirit of the first movie. There are plenty of hilarious moments; each one is pretty imaginative & hilarious to watch. You get the same cast again, but the movie is still focused mainly on the 5 main guys. If you liked the characters from the first movie, they get better in the sequel because it focuses more on the 5 main guys instead of trying to introduce you to the entire cast like in the first one. This is no Oscar nominee, so as far as I was concerned the acting was very natural and well done. This is an enjoyable movie, freshly funny, & one that is still funny the second time around. ***The Video*** Nothing spectacular to report here, but nothing really bad either. Some scenes are grainier than others, but overall the transfer is clean & decent. Colors are well presented overall, though there are a few scenes on the beach where the contrast is very unnatural. ***The Audio*** This DVD sports a DTS soundtrack, and it's good to see studios providing DTS even when it's not some big budget action movie. Keeping my last statement in mind though, there isn't any part of this movie that is sonically that impressive. But it's not expected to be. Dialogue is very clear, and there's quite a lot of use of popular rock music. When the music comes through it's very clear & lively. Not much use of surrounds here, but there's really nothing to complain about, the audio gets the job done. ***The Extras*** You get a few cool extras here, deleted scenes, behind the scenes, and outtakes. The outtakes were the only extra that I found actually interesting, they're pretty funny, but not as funny as the outtakes on something like Rush Hour 2. Was this review helpful?

Sounds like Kevin from the review above works for buy.com. How about a real critique and not a commercial? Was this review helpful?

For those of you that feel that the sequel is never as good as the original, you will be pleasantly surprised by American Pie 2. It is full of lots of laughs and all the same characters. I can't wait to see what kind of craziness is included on this new unrated DVD. This movie is worth the cost of the disc just for "Stifler" alone! Plus, as usual, buy.com has a great price!
