| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Kings of Leon: Caleb Followill (vocals, guitar); Matthew Followill (guitar); Jared Followill (bass instrument); Nathan Followill (drums). | | Kings of Leon's blend of bluesy raunch, countrified inflections, streamlined Strokes-like guitar jams, sleepy psychedelia, and post-punk stylings is a fresh, yet somehow familiar, cocktail. AHA SHAKE HEARTBREAK, the band's sophomore effort, follows closely on the heels of the honky-tonk rock of their debut, but it pushes the whole even further into unexpected territory. While "Pistol of Fire" cooks like John Lee Hooker with extra backbeat and a side of beans, other tracks on HEARTBREAK mix classic-rock boogie ("Four Kicks"), swagger and desperate yowls ("The Bucket"), and hillbilly yodels ("Day Old Blues") into an engaging indie aesthetic. | | As if Kings of Leon's keen songwriting, stylistic amalgam, and gutsy attack weren't enough, there is the utterly unique singing of Caleb Followill, who usually sounds as though he is heavily intoxicated or has just woken up from a nap. Followill's lazy, idiosyncratic phrasing and intonation admirably take Kings of Leon out of the realm of potentially similar bands, with singers who are content to yelp and imitate. AHA SHAKE HEARTBREAK rocks, rolls over, dreams, and gets up with a pain in its heart--a process that merits numerous listens. | Producer: Ethan Johns; Angelo |

5 of 5 Once again, proof their title of "Kings" Saturday, March 26, 2005 jivemonkey from Williamsport, IN
I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of the CD "Ah-ha, Shake Heartbreak" from a friend in Europe, and I have had more time than most in the States to absorb this. It is VERY important that you give this disc time to grow on you, otherwise, writing it off will cause you to miss one of the greatest rock releases since their debut "Youth & Young Manhood."
The boys have become men, and it shows in every aspect from the lyrics & vocals("Day Old Blues") to their intrument skills ("The Bucket") and their ability to craft a great hook.
Don't let it's unassuming first listen throw you off. This is a great rock cd from a fantastically talented group! They remain the Kings of Leon! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 WHAT 2ND YEAR BLUES Tuesday, March 08, 2005 looker_25 from AUSTRALIA
As i waited for the new kings album to come out, my worries of second album blues started to cross my mind. The strokes have coped it the vines have coped it no doubt jet is going to get it. But AHA SHAKE is one of the best second albums going around. Its a lot more musically advanced than youth and young manhood, and it is filtered with hot rock tracks, that may not be number one singles but will have a certain cult status among all kings fans. personal highlights include: MILK, taper jean girl, four kicks and razz. All i can say is buy this album and you wont be disappointed.
