Award-winning actor Baldwin--whose split from wife Kim Basinger and subsequent custody battle surrounding their child exacted a heavy toll on all involved--makes a powerful case for reexamining and changing the way child custody is decided in this country.

Annotation:
Film and television star Alec Baldwin (GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, 30 ROCK) takes a scathing look at the American family law system in A PROMISE TO OURSELVES, a passionate and brutally revealing memoir of his bitter divorce and custody battle with the actress Kim Basinger. Baldwin is known for his brooding persona, and his angst and anger are in full display in this heartfelt plea for more fairness and decency in a system that tears parents (typically the father) away from their children, sometimes resulting in the bitterness and depression of P.A.S. (Parental Alienation Syndrome).

Praise
"Divorce is hell. Lawyers are vultures. Children get lost. Baldwin bravely set out to illuminate and change the way divorce is conducted in this country; he also, wittingly or not, offers a candid, unhappy portrait of a marriage gone desperately sour." - Alex Kuczynski 10/05/2008

"Alec Baldwin's A PROMISE TO OURSELVES proceeds from a double-pronged thesis: that American divorce laws are deeply flawed, and that Kim Basinger is a crazy bitch." - Caitlin Flanagan 05/01/2009

Introduction

I NEVER WANTED TO write this book. Although my experiences with judges, lawyers, and court-ordered therapists during my own high conflict divorce proceedings left me outraged over the injustices I believe are endemic to the family law system in our society, I had no desire to revisit them. The pain I suffered, the fear of and anger I felt toward nearly all of the principals involved, and the inescapable sense of helplessness and isolation exhausted me. However, to live inside the divorce matrix, to be engaged in that battle, ultimately means to be poised to tell your story, to make your point, to argue your side at a moment’s notice. It is a fire that is constantly burning.

These feelings moved me to share my own experiences with nearly any kindred spirit who broached the subject. In restaurants, ticket lines, airplanes, men’s locker rooms, wherever I might be, when that particular conversation started, the facts of my own case would spi

5 of 5 Every judge should read this book Thursday, October 09, 2008
lljmerriman from Rosemount, MN

This book is a MUST READ for every father, mother, judge, lawyer, social worker, psychologist - anyone associated with the divorce court legal system. The pain inflicted on Alec as a father is inexcusable. His journey through his divorce and the legal system that took his daughter away from him is too familiar to fathers who have been put in the same position. He discusses at length Parental Alienation Syndrome. A very real and tragic situation. Our society must seriously look at how divorce affects not only the father, but the child who must grow up without he guiding light of both parents because of a spiteful ex-spouse who wants to punish the non-custodial parent by using the child. How pathetic. To Alec - Olives and Cheese and Raspberry Foam Blaster moments are to be cherished. However, there should be infinitely more of them.
