Along with the original versions of tried-and-true radio classics by the Box Tops, the Mamas & the Papas, Tommy Roe, the Vogues, and Jerry Butler are less-than-obvious inclusions by Lou Christie, the Crests, the American Breed, and Jewel Akens. ~ Al Campbell One could certainly take exception to the title of this CD. Where are the Beatles? Where are the girl groups? Where is Motown? Where is soul? So maybe it isn't the ultimate collection, but it is pretty nice. Most of the focus is on lightweight hits like Tommy Roe's "Sheila" and Len Barry's "1,2,3." The Mamas & the Papas have two tracks, "Monday Monday" and the always great "California Dreamin'," and the Box Tops show a little grit with "The Letter." Any record that contains Brenton Wood's "Gimme Little Sign" can't be all bad. If you want to be transported back to the pleasant AM pop 1960s, this disc does a fine job. ~ Tim Sendra An ample collection of '60s hits featured on New York's radio station WCBS-FM 101 (as well as stations across the country -- and the world). The selections run the gamut, everything from novelty, surf, soul, and teen pop. Includes the Marvelows' "I Do," a street corner staple, the Surfaris' "Wipe Out," Barry Mann's super-silly "Who Put the Bomp," girl group from the Chiffons via "One Fine Day," and Lou Christie's ear-piercing falsetto shrieks on "The Gypsy Cried."
