| | | | This bilingual edition, "Six Vietnamese Poets," brings together for the first time the works of six writers who came to maturity during the American War in Vietnam, three men and three women. What will you find in this book?-the richness and diversity of Vietnamese life and literature from an array of poems that range from free verse to romantic lyric to traditional classic forms. The book features poets from North and South, men and women, combat soldiers and poet-soldiers writing of life in Vietnam through the last four decades of the 20th century. "Speaking to the HeartAfter a long night up writing poems, a streak of sunlight leapt into my room.running as if I were a child, >footprints breaking the earth's first dew, chest brushing softly the short grass. Earth and sky seeped into me like wine. Startled, the heart thumping, steadily ploughing into time." -Lam Thi My Da Kevin Bowen and Nguyen Ba Chung co-translated "Distant Road" by Nguyen Duy. Bowen is also the author of two books of poetry, "Forms of Prayer at the Hotel Edison" and "Playing Basketball with the Viet Cong." They both live in Boston." Annotation: The six poets whose work is collected here came of age in Vietnam during its war with the United States. From both the North and the South, three men and three women share their experiences. | | Read A Chapter |

Woman Knitting In the chill afternoon a woman sits by a window, knitting. She seems so patient and so anxious. Patient, for she has the rest of her life. Anxious, for these may be her last moments. No sighs. No smiles. Is it grief she hides, or happiness? Is she filled with hope, or doubt? She never looks up. Does she look back to first meeting, or to last parting? Does her knitting hide sorrow or joy? Or is it hope or worry in her eyes? In the chill afternoon a woman sits by a window, knitting. Under her feet, a roll of wool, a coiled blue globe, slowly unravels its circles.

Hà Nôi, 1973 | Letter to a Younger Brother
To Nhon In the busy life of the city, Each person has his or her own happiness, Each person has his or her own worry. Parents are busy, children are busy. We who are often away every time we are together, we think of you. And share our worry. Between the trees of your jungles and the trees of our city, Between your camouflaged shelter and our home, Between your meals of wild greens and our red ripe tomatoes, Between your rifle and this page, O brother, how tight the bond. Our nieces and nephews are growing up under B52s, enemy bombs, and gunfire. They wear new shirts, read new poems. When they start school in autumn in their songs they'll see their uncles as bo doi, sing of the tai beo hats hugging their innocent faces. They will grow up, and in the autumns to come, in the months and years ahead, in the vastness of the country, their youth will be different from ours. Not just because of the poems. Not just because of the songs still celebrating the jungle and the battles.
