| With their debut, 40 Oz. to Freedom, Sublime appeal to alterna-punks but they cut a little deeper with their lyrics and their very aesthetic, which blends different cultures and sounds. Since Sublime have a knack for combining dancehall reggae with hardcore punk, the music can be nervy and invigorating, but the group's joyous blend of cultures gets nervy on the lyrical level, particularly on the controversial "Date Rape." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | |
Artist Overview
Long Beach County skate-rockers Sublime played an infectious mix of ska, punk, hip-hop, and acoustic music that earned them both a devoted underground following and mainstream success during their run in the mid-1990s. Sublime were proud purveyors of the good times, and in 1996 the good times would prove to be the band's demise when lead singer and founding member Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose. The band's two remaining members continued on as the Long Beach Dub Allstars.
