The story of Jon Krakauer's (Christopher McDonald, Flubber) personal eyewitness account of two expedition teams and their long ascent to the top of the world's tallest peak in May 1996. With a background of several successful Everest trips, Rob Hall (Nathaniel Parker, Beverly Hills Ninja), an accomplished, organized New Zealander, confidently leads one expedition. Consisting of guides, sherpas and ordinary climbers, this group dreams of making it to the summit. They soon join forces with the team of Scott Fischer (Peter Horton, TV's thirtysomething), an American whose laid-back style is well-suited to his clients; among them, attractive, wealthy and pampered socialite Sandy Hill Pittman. Problems soon arise, ranging from malfunctioning communications equipment to a shortage of oxygen supply, from bitter sub-zero temperatures and howling winds to illness and exhaustion. Yet nearly all of the climbers would reach the top of the world. But then a blinding snowstorm makes their journey down Everest both tragic for its loss of life and heroic for its extraordinary rescue attempts.

Editor's Note

This film, based on Jon Krakauer's phenomenal #1 best-seller, chronicles the true-life suspenseful struggle for survival on the peaks of the world's highest mountain. This is what happens when a group of people, both amateurs and professionals, attempt to climb the Himalayas and find that despite their money and preparations, one can never underestimate the power of nature at its fiercest. The thrilling INTO THIN AIR: DEATH ON EVEREST stars Peter Horton (THIRTYSOMETHING) and Christopher McDonald (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) and was directed by Robert Markowitz (THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN).
